DESCRIPTION

TERRA is a collection of products of VICARA_exploratory design that departs from the primordial natural elements to the construction of man made artifacts. Beyond the material dimension this collection explores the handling of quotidian objects and our interaction with them, transformed in haptic and synesthetic experiences. The inherent processes developed to create this singular pieces result from an ongoing exploration by the designers, aiming for auto-production and distinct repeatable shapes. From this relation between scents and textures of TERRA with the craft processes inherent to its development arrive the products Caruma, Cerne, Cimento and Mocho.

TERRA is a collection of products of VICARA_exploratory design that departs from the primordial natural elements to the construction of man-made artifacts. Beyond the material dimensional this col-lection explores the handling of quotidian objects and our interaction with them, transformed in haptic and synesthetic experiences. All products derive from an process exploration where self-production and the creation of methods for unique pieces is achieve. From this relation between scents and textures of TERRA we arrive at Caruma, Cerne, Cimento and Mocho.

Caruma is a series of vases formed by a mixed technique – ceramic and basket weaving –which purpose is demonstrating that there is a possible relation between such different constructive field, creating an interdependency relation. “On one side, the ceramic with a strong tradition in the context in which I am, Caldas da Rainha (PT), and on the other side the basket weaving from Angola – where part of my roots come from – specially the woven spiral technique. There is a relation between the two matters that are familiar; the basket weaving on one side with its quotidian lasting, and the ceramic on the other side with what is an historic dimension. I search a intercul-tural dialogue that mixes what is close with what is far.”

Cimento is a collection of containers in thin ce-ment, resulting from a production process developed that aims for auto-production. The char-acteristics of the process allow for a total control of the stages which potentiates the creation of an almost endless number of light shapes that con-trast with the normal notion we have of the mate-rial.The material is a mix of cement, water, sand, fibers, and additives which make the piece water proof. The molds are made of polipropilene sheets.

The cerne is the core of the trunk that no longer participates in the active conduction of water in the tree, functioning only as support. In some tree species it is common its rotting, and, sometimes, its total destruction. This way, the use of the trunk as a mold comes from this void. The shapes of these containers in blown glass rely at Natures will.

Starting from the reinterpretation of the tradicional portuguese stool, Mocho questions the use of pine wood as a material, incorporating in the seat the raw material. Two independent supports allow the elevation of a pine tree trunk to seat, which length is defined by the user.
