Maybe it’s down to money. Or maybe it’s ‘cause the stuffed-shirts can’t stand someone having a good time on their own terms. But for some reason, in most corners of the world, it’s still against the law for God-fearing folk to make their own Whiskey. That’s why, right up until a couple of years back when the old man finally gave up the ghost — Popcorn Sutton was a living legend.

Popcorn was an American Appalachian moonshiner who lived up in Hemphill, a mountainous community in Haywood County, North Carolina. He spent his whole adult life thumbing his nose at the law by making authentic hooch, infuriating the Feds by spreading the secrets of his trade, writing books and even starring in several documentaries.

Right up until he came a cropper at the long arm of the law, this Grandpappy gone bush showed a unique sense of character. He was his own man who learned his trade early and used it to drop out

of school, drive fast, and chase women. His life was filled with disappointments and sadness, as well as quality times. Even in his twilight years, Popcorn was still trekking up the mountain in his dungarees and straw hat to brew one last batch of hooch for his mates. The man was no oil painting — but by God he was popular.
