Learning outcomes
• Be aware of why waste management is important
• Be aware of ways to reduce, reuse and recycle a range of waste
• Be aware of carbon footprinting
• Work in groups to suggest ways to reduce waste and energy use within the School
Waste quantities
• Around 450m tonnes of waste is produced in the UK annually
• Around 65% goes to landfill……
Does it matter?
•Lost of useful resources
•Pollution and loss of land
•GHG emissions and global warming
Landfill?
• Wasted resources
• Landfill gas
• Leachate
• Shortage of suitable sites
• Planning problems
• Paper 30%
• Kitchen/garden waste 30%
• Glass 10%
• Plastic 8%
• Cans and tins 10%
• Cloth 4%
• Other things 8%
What’s in your bin?
Recycling plastic bottles
• Bottles are easy to recycle because they are easy to sort
• Two main types
• High density polyethylene (HDPE)
• PET
Baled like straw and off to be recycled
Made from PET bottles
Made with HDPE
A. 10 minutesB. 1 hourC. 3 hours
If you recycle one aluminium can, for how long could you watch television with the energy you saved?
WEEE Recycling – case study
• Collect from local authorities, distribution centres, businesses and others
• Goods taken to site and tested.
• Reused, repaired or recycled depending on condition
• Only 2% waste, everything else is sold
• Training prisoners to recycle and repair
ELV Recycling – case study• Specialist high volume depollution equipment pre-treat vehicles
received directly from local authorities, insurance companies, and the public.
• Hazardous waste items are removed and any fluid leaks contained.
• Vehicle transferred to a covered depollution building removal of waste products for recycling.
• After the depollution, the vehicle enters vehicle crusher and the compressed bails are then sent to steel mills for recycling.
How many slices of toast could you make from the energy wasted by a computer monitor left on overnight?
• A. 6
• B. 21
• C. 37
CO2 emissions
Which of the following produces the highest quantity of CO2 emissions?
- A power station operating for 100 minutes
- 100 days of leaks from a chilled food fridge plant
- 100 cows in 1 year
- 100 cars in 1 year
Measures to reduce
• Photovoltaic cells
• Biomass heating
• Wind turbines
• Insulation (cavity walls/lofts)
• Double glazing
• Under floor heating
• Low energy lighting
