TERRYVILLE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH JANUARY, 2017
Dear Members & Friends of Terryville Congregational Church: We have just come off of a beautiful Christmas holiday at our church. The build-up was wonderful with our Christmas Bazaar, our play, It’s a Wonderful Life, and all of our very moving Advent services; and the holiday itself was beautiful with our Children’s service on Dec. 18, our two moving candlelight services on Christmas Eve, and our festive Christmas Day worship. What a wonderful time of year! And now we move into the New Year! Happy New Year, 2017! I wonder what the New Year will bring. What do you have as part of your New Year’s Resolution? Over recent weeks I have had several people point me to an article that appeared in the Waterbury Republican-American newspaper. The article appeared Dec. 17 and was titled “A Shrinking Faith” by Michael Puffer. In the article, it stated “at least 38 churches across the Archdiocese of Hartford are being considered for closure and other 60 parishes to be limited to worship sites as leaders seek to consolidate and strengthen the shrinking faith.” The article talks about plans that are not yet finalized but that are underway in the Roman Catholic Church. As interesting as the article is, I enjoyed one reader’s response on the Republican-American’s website even more:
“The Faith has persevered in good times and bad for over 2000 years, and will survive until the end of time. The number of parishes, and even the number of Catholics, in a given area may shrink, but the Faith itself is
eternal and will never shrink. These local declines in numbers of church-going Catholics in our area are more than offset by abundant growth and
renewal elsewhere. Indeed, I am a recent convert, drawn by the splendor of the Church’s rich intellectual history, as well as its unchanging message
through time: Jesus is the light of the world! Alleluia!”
As I think about our own church and our future, I wonder what the New Year will bring, what God will bring. And what I envision for us is not decline and closure but rather renewal and growth. We all have to play our part for this to happen. As I said in worship a few weeks ago, when Jesus ascended he charged the disciples with being his body on earth and continuing his mission. So if we picture an actual body, we can picture how it takes many parts to work together to make the body whole: arms, brain, heart, legs, face, and so on. It takes us all to make our church whole. Let’s be the body of Christ together in 2017 and beyond! It’s not like we don’t have the seeds to make this happen: with over 100 in attendance on Sundays, and over 60 registered in our Sunday School, we are well on our way to a brighter future. Let’s do this! My favorite all-time prayer talks about wondering what God has in store, and believing that all things are possible through God. It was actually written as a song, by Christopher Grundy, and goes roughly like this:
Hear us, God, for we are praying. Hear us, God, some of us laughing in our joy. Hear us, God, some of us hurt, crying out to you, wondering, “What
will be? What will be?”
Speak to us, God, for we are listening. Speak to us, God, for we are waiting for your voice. Speak to us, God, speak in our hearts and speak all around.
Tell us, what can be. What can be. Amen.
With God, all things are possible. Let’s be the body of Christ and make our church stronger in this coming year. With Christ’s Love, Rev Zack

Shazia - Faisalabad, Pakistan / Education provider
A loan of $675 helps to repair furniture and purchase solar cells.
Shazia is a 36-year-old single woman who started running a low-cost private school many
years ago. There are 85 students enrolled in the school, 64% of them female students. The
aim of the school is to promote aspirations within the low-income community. Through
education the students can expect a better future. Shazia's school is located in the central
part of the country where the weather remains mostly hot and humid. There is plenty of
sunlight available. Shazia wishes to purchase solar cells to convert the sunlight into
electricity for the operations of the school. In addition, she wants to repair the classroom
furniture. How awesome it is that Shazia is able to the energy of the sun to power the
school saving money at the same time!
If you are interested in more information on Kiva or would like to help in deciding our
next loan recipient, please contact us!
Best wishes for a relaxing, fun-filled Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy 2017!

Meditation Workshop
First Weds of each month in Chapel
January 4, 2017 at 7pm
If you suffer from anxiety, restless sleep
patterns, inability to focus, or just enjoy the
calming feeling and sense of peace that meditation
can provide please join us in the chapel on the
first Wednesday of each month. Bring a yoga mat,
cushion, towel, or anything that will make you
comfortable whether sitting on the floor or in a
chair. If you plan to sit in a chair a bolster
pillow can help greatly. We will begin each
session with light, gentle yoga stretches, prayer,
and “rocks and feathers”. We will then begin
meditation and end each session with light
refreshments. Please contact
Jennifer Zalaski at 860-585-1417 or
[email protected] for any questions or
further details

Treasurer’s Report:
I am not due to report financials until January for the end of the year 2016
but I wanted to include a quick note this month. I have finally been able to
update Quickbooks with emailing capability! WOOHOO! With that being
said we can alleviate some of the financial costs of sending out quarterly
statements. If you would like to receive your statement via email instead of
snail mail, please email me at [email protected] and I can update
your Quickbooks file to email your statements to you.
I want to wish you and your family a very MERRY and BLESSED
Christmas! Please let us all remember Jesus is the reason for the season! I
know we can get caught up in the lights, presents, food and such but let us
all keep in mind what this day is truly all about. May God bless you this
Christmas and to all a happy and healthy New Year!

ATTENTION BIBLE STUDY LOVERS!
Our Bible Study group has collectively decided to move our weekly
Bible Study from Thursdays to Mondays. Same time and place as
always – 11am in my office. This move in date is because many of our
current attendees are active in the Red Hat group as well as the
Plymouth and Prospect Seniors groups, and many of their events take
place on Thursdays. We hope this new day will be a great way for all of
us to kick off the week! We currently have around nine in our group,
and we are always open to newcomers. We have a lot of deep
discussions as well as many laughs, sharing about our lives, and we pray
together. Throughout the year we also watch religious-themed movies
together, periodically have lunch together, and do other kinds of
projects such as make the ashes for Ash Wednesday. All of us make a
special bond and thoroughly enjoy exploring the Bible together. Join
us!
Have you recently moved or changed email addresses? We are trying
to update our membership list. Please call Sue in the office or email her
