Chapter1:
One day the parson said to John Durbeyfield that he belonged to the ancient and noble
family of the D'Urbervilles. In the field there were girls dancing, one of those girls was Tess,
John's daughter.
When Tess arrived at home, her mother
said to her that they are the oldest family
in the district.
Later the doctor says that John was getting
fat around his heart and it could kill him
any day or he might live for another ten
years.
Chapter2:
At two o'clock in the morning, John
Durbeyfield said to Tess and his son
Abraham to take the bees. When they got
to the top of the hill with their horse
Prince, they got asleep.
Suddenly a mail-cart crashed into the
wagon in the dark and killed Prince. When
Tess returned home and told her parents
what had happened, she still blamed
herself for the disaster.
John buried the faithful old horse.
Chapter3:
Joan Durbeyfield said to Tess that she had to introduce herself to Mrs D'Urberville. Tess
didn't find work so she went to d'Urberville's house. Tess had expected to see an old lady
but she saw a tall man in his mid twenties, he was Alec Stoke d'Urberville. Afte, they walked
towards the greenhouse, there he put a strawberry in Tess's mouth.
Chapter4:
The d'Urbervilles offered a job to Tess and then she accepted. One day, Tess said goodbye to
her family but when she was on the carriage she was terrified because Alec drove the
carriage very fast so Alec said to Tess that he would stop if she kissed him but she didn't
want to. Finally, Tess jumped down and she went walking towards Trantridge.
Chapter5:
As the days passed, Tess began to lose her shyness of Alec. In this way, Tess settled into her
new life. Tess started to look for diversions to break the monotony of her everyday life like
to gather on Saturday nights to drink and dance. One night Alec's mistress started a quarrel
with Tess but Alec helped Tess and they rode away and stopped in the ancient part of the
forest called the Chase. After this, she was maiden no more.
Chapter6:
Tess thought about how much her life had changed in the past few months. Tess went to the
village of Marlott but before Tess said to Alec that she never would love him. When Tess
arrived at home her family was still very poor. Tess told her mother everything. One Sunday,
Tess went to the church but she decided not to go again because people talked about her.
Chapter7:
One day, Tess's baby became very ill, the doctor warned Tess that the baby might not live
through the night. Tess wanted to baptize her baby before that the baby dies, then, Tess
baptized her baby and she called him: Sorrow. In the morning little Sorrow was dead. Sorrow
was buried in a corner of the churchyard. Her tragic experiences had taught her important
lessons about life. Tess was looking for work and she took a job as a dairymaid.
Chapter8:
Tess was going to work to The Valley Of The Great Dairies. One day, she was pouring milk
into the milking bucket. She looked around and had the feeling that her new life was
beginning.
The milkmen sang to encourage the cows to give more milk. Mr.Crick was speaking with a
man, this man was the young man who had stopped to dance with the girls in the field in
Marlott: Angel.
Chapter9:
Angel began to notice Tess more often so they began to see more of each other. They
started to fall in love. Izz, Marian and Retty were in love with Angel so Tess tried to avoid
being with Angel so that the others girls would have a chance.
Chapter10:
Tess and the other three dairymaids went to Mellstock Church but a part of the road had
been flooded by rain so Angel came to help them. Angel only liked Tess but she couldn't
marry anyone. One hot afternoon, Angel knelt down beside Tess and he told her he loved
her.
Chapter11:
Angel wanted to learn about dairies and that business. Angel went to visit his family. Angel's
family were very religious. Angel spoke to his father about Tess, then Angel's father wanted
to meet Tess.
Angel returned to the dairy and he told Tess that he had spoken to his father about her but
she still kept telling him that she couldn't marry him.
Chapter12:
Finally, Tess told Angel that she loved him but she told him that she was a descendant of the
d'Urberville family. Then, Tess accepted to marry Angel. Tess wrote a letter for her mum to
tell her about it. At Christmas, Tess wrote a letter to Angel explaining about her past. The
next day Angel did not say anything but she saw that she had pushed the letter under the
carpet by mistake so she told Angel the story of Alec d'Urberville and her poor little son.
Chapter13:
When Tess finished telling her story to Angel, he was very disappointed with Tess because he
wanted a pure woman. Finally, Angel went for a walk to think.
Chapter14:
The next morning, Tess and Angel talked politely. They thought that they couldn't live
together this way. During the night Angel was walking in his sleep and he carried Tess to the
churchyard.
Tess managed to get Angel back to the house without waking him up. In the morning they
parted and went their separate ways.
Chapter15:
Tess told her mother all what had happened with Angel. Angel decided go to Brazil to buy a
cheap land. He asked Izz to go with him but after he told Izz that it was a mistake. In the
winter, Tess went to work to Flintcombe-Ash with Marian. After, Izz arrived at Flintcombe-
Ash and she told Tess what had happened. Tess decided to visit Angel's family. One the way
back, she saw a preacher, the preacher was Alec d'Urberville.
Chapter16:
When Tess saw Alec, she hurried down the road away from the crowd but Alec saw her and
he told Tess that he had changed. Tess told Alex that she had had a baby son and that he had
died and she was married to someone. One month later, Alec said to Tess that he would give
up being a preacher, that he loved her but Tess didn't want the help of Alec. Finally, Tess
went to her house and she wrote a letter to Angel.
Chapter17:
When Angel received the letter from Tess, he began to make preparations for returning to
England. Angel understood that he had not been fair to Tess. Tess's parents were ill so Tess
took over the work of looking after the house and family. One day, she discovered that her
dad had died. She was angry with Angel because he had not helped her. She and her family
went to live somewhere and they stopped near the wall of the churchyard. On one of the
tombs was Alec waiting for Tess.
Chapter18:
When Angel arrived, he saw the second letter that Tess had written so Angel tried to find
Tess. He received a letter from Izz about Tess. Angel began to look Tess everywhere. Tess's
mother told Angel where she was. He found Tess but she didn't want to come back with him.
Finally, Tess killed Alec and she went with Angel. They tried to run away but they stayed to
sleep in Stonehenge, then, the policeman arrived there, they went with them.
Epilogue:
Angel and Tess's sister (Liza-Lu) climbed the hill above the town. When the town clock rang
eight times, a black flag went up the post to show that a prisoner had been hanged. Angel
and Liza-Lu with their head lowered walked down the other side of the hill, away from the
town.
