The International ElectrotechnicalCommission IEC 60754 Part 1 andPart 2 test is performed todetermine the degree of acidity ofgases evolved during thecombustion of materials taken fromelectric cables by measuring the pHand conductivity.

Cable users have expressed concernover the amount of acid gas whichis evolved when cable insulating,sheathing and other materials areburnt as this acid can causeextensive damage to electrical andelectronic equipment not involvedin the fire itself. It has beenconsidered necessary, therefore, todevelop an approved method (byextensive round robins) fordetermining the amount of acidgases evolved by burning cablecomponents so that limits can beagreed for cable specifications. As the test is not carried out on a complete cable test piece, for ahazard assessment the actualmaterial volumes of the cablecomponents should be taken intoconsideration.
