ERICHSEN -

The absolute reliability of your test results is our top priority. All our research, planning, development, construction and production is gearedto achieving this objective – not only inthe past, but today and in the future.

1932

A.M. Erichsen set up his firstsmall factory in Teltow near Ber-lin. Research and experimentsled to many further inventions.

the German State Chemico-Technical Institute successfullyapplied the ERICHSEN deep-draw-ing method to measure the ela-sticity and adhesive properties ofpaints and lacquers. The resultswere so convincing that the pro-cedure has since been adoptedby the paint industry all over theworld.

the inventive Norseman A.M.Erichsen introduced tools for cup-ping test dies to the market, without which the batch produc-tion of deep-drawn parts madeof sheet metal would hardly havebeen possible. Numerous innova-tions and improvements follow -ed. A.M. Erichsen not only posses-sed a forward-looking inventiveurge, he was also talented incommercial matters and soonenjoyed international renown.Satisfied customers were evidenceof the quality of his products.

1910It was probably true Viking spirit and the urge for discoverythat impelled the engineer A.M. Erichsen from Porsgrunn/Norway to settle and set up busi-ness in Berlin-Reinickendorf. Hisfirst invention, a water-cooledingot mould which to this dayconstitutes one of the most fre-quently used casting processesfor semi-finished products in thefoundry industry, enabled him tosecure the financial position ofhis company. A.M. Erichsen's nextinvention – the cupping test –was just as significant. This wasthe very first test method fordetermining the quality grade of sheet and strip metal.

This test procedure was initiallypatented, but has since beenadopted by all industrial coun-tries within the framework of theInternational Standards Organi-sation (ISO). Just as temperaturesare measured throughout theworld in Celsius or Fahrenheit, thestandard for sheet metal qualityis the ERICHSEN deep-drawingindex.

1975 19981949Following the turmoils of thewar and the loss of his company,A.M. Erichsen resolved to start upagain in the west of Germany. Hisbest partner – his son, Dr.-Ing. Per F.Erichsen – had studied mechanicalengineering in Hanover, graduatedat the Metallurgical Institute of theTechnical High School in Aachen, and did his doctorate at the CoalResearch Institute of Dortmund.Establishing the new company pro-ved difficult – without machines, tools, or construction drawings – ina factory kitchen of the ironworksin Sundwig. Ideas and determina-tion were the order of the day –initially the parts were made exter-nally and assembled by themselves. The modern factory we operatetoday is located not far away.

Björn Erichsen joined thecompany after completing histechnical and business manage-ment studies at the Polytechnic inMunich and at the George Wash -ington University in the U.S.A..After taking over from his father –who entered well-earned retire-ment from the active manage-ment of the business in 1977 anddied in 1988 – he is now the thirdgeneration to lead this companywhich has long since gainedinternational renown. Under hismanagement the range of instru-ments has been expanded, prima-rily by the addition of modern,non-destructive measuring devi-ces for surface engineering appli-cations.

The decision was made toincorporate tensile and pressuretesting machines, hydraulic andelectronic load and pressure cells,as well as calibration equipmentwith extreme measuring accuracyinto the production programme –reverting to the field of mechani-cal metrology earlier controlled bythe company. Support was provi-ded by a group of competent for-mer employees from ERICHSENWuppertal whose knowledge andexperience in conjunction withgreat insight into the latest in thefield of hardware and softwarehas resulted in a wide range ofmodern products.

2016In the course of 100 years theextensive Erichsen product rangehas been built up based on thetechnical fields of metrology andtest engineering. ERICHSEN paysstringent attention that theirmachines and equipment complyboth with the testing regulationsof national and international stan-dards and with the acceptanceterms of the industrial sector. Theseprovide the basis for global under-standing between the manufactu-rer and the user wherever the qua-lity of raw materials, semi-finishedand finished products is concerned.Design precision, perfect functionand absolute fulfilment of pur -pose: these attributes have toppriority at ERICHSEN.

Test machines for all types of sheetmetal forming. Dependable testsensure efficient production.

The following two test methods provide only someinsight into the wide variety oftests that can be conductedwith our test machines. Custo-mized solutions to meet ourcustomers' requirements arechallenges which we face withconfidence.

One of the best known testmethods for sheet metal world-wide - patented as early as 1913

by the founder of our company -is the ERICHSEN Cupping Test. To conduct this test, a sheetmetal specimen is clamped bet-ween a blank holder and a dieand then dented (deep-drawn)with a hardened spherical punch.

pecimen Preparation. Sheet Metal Marking.

ERICHSEN universal sheetmetal testing machines – equip-ped with the appropriate toolsand/or accessories – are suitablefor conducting a wide range oftests related to metal forming:

Cupping test acc. to Olsenor PersozSquare cup testBore expanding testacc. to ISO/TS 16630

Deep-drawing cup testacc. to Swift

This

procedure is continued at aprescribed speed until it resultsin a fine, continuous crack inthe sheet metal. The displace-ment of the spherical punch till

cracking occurs is known as thecupping index >>IE<<, andrepresents a significant qualityattribute of the tested sheetmetal. This fast, cost-effectivetesting method is just as suit-able for use inincoming inspec-tion as for in-process controls –and that without any lengthyspecimen preparation.

The Deep-drawing Cup Test is amethod of testing sheet metalby which a circular plate (blank)is stamped from a strip of sheetmetal and then formed into acup using a drawing die and adrawing punch. The greatestpossible ratio between theblank and the drawing punch

diameter, which just permitsthe faultless production of acup, is called the Limiting Drawing Ratio »ßmax « and is aquality attribute for the for-ming abilities of the sheetmetal material. The ears, whichform as a result of the flow properties of the material areundesirable because theynecessitate rework on drawnparts when they occur in practice. Here again, it is possible todetermine the best suited sheetmaterial for the intended for-ming process by means of thedeep-drawing cup test.

Also suitable for testing materials of less than 0.1 mm thickness.

Simple hand-operated Sheet Metal Testing Machine

Model 111

This easy-to-handle cupping testmachine is intended for fast inco-ming inspection and quality controlon sheet and strip metals. Because ofits sturdy construction this machineis particularly suitable for in-processtesting.

Designed as a compact benchtopmodel, this testing machine requiresa minimum of space. The slantingarrangement of the test cylinderenables the user to remain seatedwhilst observing the test. The blankholder force and the drawing speedrequired for the execution of testsconforming to the standards, are setautomatically by actuating the start

button. Afterwards the deep-draw-ing test is also performed automati-cally.

The deep-drawing index is shown ona digital display (resolution 0.1 mm).As the testing machine works auto-matically and also stops automati-cally at specimen failure, it is possibleto delay this procedure by a potentio-meter. This is particularly necessaryfor an objective assessment of thecrack when testing thicker sheetmetals.

A special microscope is an optionalaccessory which enhances this pro-cedure.

This is the most powerful and versa-tile sheet metal testing machine ofour delivery programme. It is used inresearch and development of novel,high-strength materials in moderntest centres all over the world.Depending on the demand, there aretwo versions available: with a draw-ing force of 600 kN or 1,000 kN, inclu-ding an increased blanking force andblank holder force for blank diame-ters up to 220 mm. Especially, the FLCand bulge tests often conductedwith this machine require high blankholder forces to avoid a possible con-tinue flowing of material. Infinitelyvariable control of drawing speedand blank holder force, independentof load, by means of proportionalvalve technique, manually and/or via

a PC with suitable software. Digitaldisplay of drawing and blank holderforces, drawing speed and drawingpunch stroke, each with peak valuememory. Hydraulic test head open-ing for safety and convenience of theuser. Additional facility for highspeed tests at drawing speeds up to30 m/min available.

Upon request (option) the testingmachine can be connected to a PCwith TFT-screen and colour printer byway of a bi-directional interface. ThePC controls the machine according tothe preset parameters and carriesout the acquisition, evaluation, log-ging and storage of the measuringdata.

SHEET METAL TESTING / Deep-drawing Test

The special feature of this testingmachines is the increased drawingspeed of the drawing punch which,in addition to the normal drawingspeed range of 0 - 1,200 mm/mincan be adjusted, in an infinitelyvariable manner and independentof load, up to 3,000 mm/min. This isachieved by using a separate oil cir-cuit, fed by a pump with high volu-metric displacement. Contrary tothe high speed attachment based

on a nitrogen accumulator, here aconstant drawing speed behaviouris guaranteed over the total dis-placement of 150 mm. As to thetechnical design and the optionsavailable, including PC control andproportional valve technique, thismachines are similar to Models 145. The basic version of the machi-nes includes an oil/water coolingand have a power consumption of45 kW.

Universal Sheet Metal Testing Machinefor Research, Development and In-process Testing

It is possible to test specimens up toa size of 400 x 650 mm when con-ducting the hydraulic deep-drawingtest with the Bulge/FLC tester: Inaddition to the actual hydraulic for-ming process the construction ofthis machine also allows the use ofball punches with a diameter up to200 mm. The maximum drawingforce is 2,000 kN. To guarantee anexact reading of the required draw-ing force even in case of lower forces, they are divided in two measuring

ranges. At specimen failure the testcan be stopped both manually orautomatically. The capture and theevaluation of the measuring pointson the surface of the dome can beeffected by an optical measuringdevice during the drawing process. In the basic version the height of thebulge is detected by means of ameasuring probe placed on top, themaximum path measured being 100 mm, and displayed digitally.

SHEET METAL TESTING / Calibration / Earing Test

Within the scope of quality assuran-ce of a company the inspection oftesting equipment in accordancewith ISO 9001:2000 of the testinstruments used in the laboratoryor production is a required elementthat has to be observed within defi-ned time intervals.

To comply with these requirementsour calibration set, model 170, canbe applied. It serves to re-calibratethe blank holder and drawing forcesas well as the punch stroke of oursheet metal testing machines. The

necessary force sensors match withthe corresponding machines and areinserted overarm into the test cylin-der. When inspecting the punchstroke, measuring probes are placedon top of the test head using appro-priate adapters. The parametersforce and displacement are display-ed digitally.

The accuracy and the retraceabilityof the inspection chain as requiredin the standard ISO 9001:2000 isguaranteed by the correspondingmanufacturer's certificate.

This instrument is particularlyrecommended in case of higher testarisings and/or if high demands aremade on the determination andevaluation of the earing. The PCconnected via a network to theinstrument ensures a short measu-ring time as well as a fully automa-tic data acquisition and evaluationeven for extensive series of measu-rements. The data evaluation com-prises parameters in accordance

with DIN EN 1669, standardmethods as well as extended, indivi-dual calculations, and it yieldsextensive parameters concerningthe anisotropic properties of thebasic material.

All measuring data, parameters andaccompanying information are filedin the XML format so that a furtherprocessing using other programmesis possible at any time.

Extension of the sheet metaltesting by using a hot drawingequipment (up to 550 °C). Electricallyheatable blank holder plates and

drawing dies can be inserted andexchanged easily.

Hot Drawing Equipment up to 550 °C

Hot-Drawing Device up to 700 ° C

For the evaluation of material pro-perties at elevated temperature, aspecial tool is required. This hot-drawing device is suitable for per-forming Nakajima- or Marziniaktests for determining the forminglimit curve FLC / FLD.

The tool consists of a heatablecylinder for mounting in the Sheetmetal testing machine. The for-ming tools and the specimen bothare heated in the cylinder and for-med after reaching the preset tem-perature. This tool is designed thatit is not affecting the hydraulicsystem of the testing machine. Theopening at the top, allows opticalobservation and evaluation by 3Dcamera systems such as the “ARA-MIS” from GOM or the “AutoGrid In-Process” from VIALUX.

SHEET METAL TESTING / Evaluation

Evaluation

A system for evaluation of holeexpansion according to ISO 16630 isthe HEXRASCAN (Hole EXpansionRAtio SCAN).

• Automatic - and repeatable crackdetection

• Measurement and calculation ofthe maximum hole expansion ratio

• Automatic storage of measuredvalues, including related images

• Automatic stop the test at the firstcrack (human intervention is notrequired)

Using the latest digital camera tech-nology combined with an innovativelighting concept we achieve accurateand reproducible results. The evalua-tion of the Hole Expansion Ratio isperformed automatically with speci-ally developed algorithms for thisapplication.

HEXRASCAN

For the determination of the for-ming limit curves in accordance withISO 12004, the Nakazima or theMarciniak test are described. Theprinciple of the Nakazima test (usedby up to 90 % ) is based on that ahemispherical punch deforms steelsheet billets of different widths untilfailure.

The maximum characteristic defor-mations achievable (before failure)of the different shapes of specimensare determined and thus define theforming limit curve of a material.
