Testing Power Steering Pump In Your Car

Power steering pump is a hydraulically operated device, which reduces the steering effort and

makes a turn. It also helps in easy movements of the vehicle.

The phenomenon of hydraulics is used to run the power steering pump for pushing the fluid into

the steering gear box. This fluid under pressure assists the turning of wheels of the vehicle.

On turning the steering wheel, small ports open up in the steering shaft, providing high amount

of pressure causing the shaft to turn to further turn the wheels.

The vehicle manufacturers always insist to check the fluid levels regularly in the Pump and refill

it. If you need to refill the fluid frequently, it is advisable to replace, since the pump might be

leaking.

Test your power steering pump with a “Steering system pressure tester” even after replacement

to prevent problems.

Testing:

Check the fluid levels of your car first. If necessary, add power steering fluid before

proceeding the check up further.

Connect the power steering pump and hose to the pressure gauge and shut-off the valve.

Fit the hose to the power steering pump appropriately. Make sure that the shut-off valve

is open before testing the power steering pump

.

Keep the engine in idle mode, while turning the steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel

all the way to the right and all the way to the left to release the existing air from the

power steering pump.

Close the shut-off valve and check system pressure for about 5 seconds. Note that, If the

shut-off valve is closed more than 5 seconds, your power steering pump can be

overheated which causes damage to the pump itself.

Compare the pressure reading against the manufacturer’s reading specifications. If the

pressure reading is lower than the maximum limit, your power steering pump is working

appropriately, and you’re car is safe for driving.

Troubleshoot if the pressure reading is not the same as the manufacturer’s specifications.

Refer the manual of your car or your power steering pump (if you just replaced a new

one) to research the reasons for any other issues.
