testosterone replacement via a transdermal patch is `safe' and increases lean body mass

Testosterone replacement via a transdermal patch is ‘safe’ and increases lean body mass in men with low serum testosterone levels and HIV infection, say researchers in the US. In this study, 41 such men were randomised to apply 2 transdermal patches containing testosterone [‘Androderm’] 2.5 mg/patch (n = 20), or 2 placebo patches (21), to the abdomen, back, arms or thighs, every night for 12 weeks. * Testosterone therapy significantly increased lean body mass and fat- free mass compared with baseline, while no change was seen with placebo. The change in lean body mass correlated with the change in testosterone levels during testosterone replacement. The incidence of adverse effects did not differ between the 2 groups. * The study was supported in part by SmithKline Beecham. Bhasin S, et al.
