Doug Walker Challenge CourseThe addition of the Doug Walker Challenge Course on the Jackson Campus of TSS provides new opportunities for self development, teamwork and exploring science concepts.

Most Programs Extended to 5:00pmSummer Adventures based at the Jackson Campus of TSS end at 5:00pm this year, better matching parent’s schedules while adding an extra hour of time for exploration and learning.

Entering Grades 3—5The Hemmingways, Updikes and Rowlings of the world all started somewhere! In this fiction-writing workshop, you will first learn how to organize and structure stories. Whether writing a short-story or a trilogy, this workshop will help young authors learn what it takes to successfully tell their first tales.

The Art of MathEntering Grades 3—5Explore the mixture of math’s powerful order and art’s spontaneous freedom. From Leonardo’s perfect Mona Lisa to the endless staircases of M.C. Escher, it doesn’t take a kaleidoscope to see how math and art are always linked. Deconstruct the pyramids through the golden ratio and create Op-Art of your own!

Robot ChallengeEntering Grades 3—5You have two minutes to get all of the balls from the dumpster into your own home-base. READY. SET. GO! True to the nature of robotics competitions, each team will be competing in the same challenge course, creating a robot that will perform all of the functions needed to be victorious in competitions.

Entering Grades 3—5A comically involved, complicated invention, contrived to perform a simple operation. Learn how to make even the most basic task an engineering playground. Build a machine that utilizes dominos, a popcorn machine and lots of water balloons. Discover the most unique way to do the most mundane things.

Greek Mythology

Entering Grades 3—5Come explore the ancient world of the Greek. We will study the huge collection of stories explaining the creation of the world and the lives of the gods, goddesses, heroes and heroines. We will discover the math, science and culture of these adventurous, ancient inhabitants through their literature.

Introduction to Mandarin

Entering Grades 3—5Nearly 935 million people speak Mandarin, making it the most common first language ever and fastest growing language to be taught in US schools. Learn about Chinese culture and obtain basic skills to begin the path of learning the language of nearly 15% of the world. Students will also learn the foundations of creating Chinese characters.

Entering Grades 9–11The wilderness of Jackson Hole has inspired some of the most influential writers and artists of our time. Spark your creativity by learning to understand diverse, charismatic wildlife and the ecology of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Explore this place with peers and local artists by hiking, canoeing and backpacking in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Use these awe-inspiring backdrops to build your own artistic capacity. Includes twelve nights on campus, three nights backcountry camping and four nights camping in Yellowstone. High school credit is available.

Jackson Hole Science Expedition

Entering Grades 11–12, Recent GraduatesJoin the 47th year of the program that started Teton Science Schools! Immerse yourself in the study of the natural sciences in one of the most beautiful and ecologically complex wilderness areas in North America. Sharpen your analytical thinking and scientific skills through hands-on exploration of Yellowstone National Park, small group field-research projects and a culminating backpacking experience on the crest of the Tetons. The program includes thirteen nights on campus, five nights camping in Yellowstone and five nights in the backcountry. High school credit is available. College credit available for an additional cost.

SAT/ACT Prep

Entering Grades 9–12Learn the unique format of the SAT and how to efficiently work through the problems. Recognize your own strengths within each subject. Identify where you need to focus and what it will take to ace the test. This course is designed to inspire confidence and help make scores an asset to college applications. The morning session is mandatory; the afternoon session is for those students who want scheduled extra practice time.

High School Geometry (Credit)

Entering Grades 9–12Learn a semester’s worth of Geometry in just two weeks! Complete this intensive yet fun upper level math course and earn high school credit. This challenging course will cover congruence, similarity, right triangles, trigonometry, circles, expressing geometric properties with equations, geometric measurement and dimension and modeling with geometry.

10 days: Jul 14–18 and Jul 21–258:30am–4:30pm • $800

Geographical Infosystems/GPSEntering Grades 9–12Learn how to use the Geographical Infosystems software, computers and GPS devices to create a map or maps by the end of this five, full day program. Students may explore their own areas of interest from urban planning to wild lands and anywhere in between. Become familiar with GIS, a valuable technology-based skill which is widely used professionally in the fields of environmental science, engineering, urban planning, business, geography and social sciences.

Educator Development | Teacher Learning Center19Combining Research and Educationin Science Teaching (CREST)This workshop is designed for middle and high school teachers with a background in watershed ecology to learn more about integrating water research into their classrooms. The workshop will include hands-on, field-based water quality monitoring as well as practice using watershed education toolboxes. Offered in partnership with support from the National Science Foundation, EPS 1208909.

4 days, 3 nights: Jun 26–29 (Kelly, WY) • $150

Power of PLACE SummitThis summit will connect leading theorists and scholars of place-based education with leading practitioners – classroom teachers. During the four-day Summit, there will be keynote presentations including one by David Sobel, hands-on, experiential sessions on place-based learning led by teachers, and outdoor, place-based experiences in Jackson Hole. Offered by the Place Learning and Civic Engagement program - a collaboration between TSS and the University of Wyoming funded through a Math Science Partnership grant.

4 days, 3 nights: Jul 7–10 (Jackson, WY) • $100

Wyoming Stream TeamThis classroom and field-based course is available to teachers and educators of Wyoming. The program focuses on training in water quality monitoring and includes monitoring supplies. Participants will build the foundation to initiate watershed monitoring projects in their home communities. Offered in partnership with support from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality.

6 days, 5 nights: Jul 13–18 (Kelly, WY) • $150

Field Research CampaignThe campaign will be an opportunity for teachers to experience the process and practice of near-surface and sub-surface hydrology with University of Wyoming scientists. Emphasis will be placed on research practices with time allotted to consider classroom applications. Offered in partnership with support from the National Science Foundation, EPS 1208909.

TSS | Faculty & Staff 20Qualified InstructorsAll instructors are at least 21 years old and have completed a thorough application process including interviews, reference checks, drug testing and driving and criminal background checks. Teaching team members also receive extensive and ongoing training in risk management, driving, first aid, CPR, teaching methods and the cultural and natural history of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Small Field GroupsField groups typically have 6-14 students and two instructors, a ratio which allows for high quality education and individual attention. Each group has at least one lead instructor with Wilderness First Responder training and extensive experience at TSS. Most field groups will have additional instructors who have already completed or will complete an undergraduate degree within the year.

Kelly CampusLocated inside Grand Teton National Park, the Kelly Campus is the longtime home of TSS. Views extend from the foot of the Gros Ventre Mountains through the sage flats of Jackson Hole and across the Snake River to the Teton Range. Facilities include dorms, a dining lodge, classroom space and the Murie Museum.

Jackson CampusNestled in Coyote Canyon less than two miles from the town of Jackson, the Jackson Campus is a nearly 900-acre site comprised of creeks, ponds and native vegetation. The lodges, classrooms and dining hall were designed and built using high-performance materials with low-level organic compounds and minimal resources.

Teton ValleyThe merger with Teton Valley Community School in Victor, Idaho provides the perfect home base for Idaho-based explorations. The four acre campus is a dynamic learning environment that includes an organic garden, natural playscapes and an animal care program, all located within the town of Victor and nestled in the surrounding mountains and canyons of Caribou Targhee National Forest.

Mountain WestTeton Science Schools has a long history of educational outreach in schools across the region through the Graduate Program and Teacher Learning Center. Resource focused curriculum designed in partnership with regional affiliates allows those in other communities opportunities to learn about the natural world. TSS | Registration 22Program Size and LocationTypical program size varies from 6-14 participants per session. All programs meet at the Jackson Campus of Teton Science Schools unless specifically noted in description.

Space is LimitedRegistrations will be processed in the order they are received and must be accompanied by full payment for most programs. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express as well as money orders or personal checks. An acceptance packet with all pertinent details will be sent to confirm your enrollment. Need-based financial aid is available for most programs.

Switch PolicyOnce registration is complete for a summer youth, adult and/or family adventure, a $10 non-refundable administrative fee will be assessed for each adventure that is switched to a different date or adventure.

Cancellation PolicyIf you cancel, a refund will be issued up to 30 days prior to the start date, less a $25 administrative fee per program. If cancellation is less than 30 days prior to start date, refunds will not be issued. Although we make every effort to adhere to our program schedule, extenuating circumstances may cause Teton Science Schools to cancel a program, in which case a full refund will be issued.

Inclement Weather PolicyAdult & Family Adventures will be adapted to any weather condition. Please bring closed-toed shoes and appropriate outdoor gear for the weather forecast. Evening Canoe and Picnic will depart in any weather and make a final decision about canoeing at the lake. If the weather is not conducive for canoeing, the group will hike or enjoy a wildlife tour through the park. If there is a threat of bad weather, families may choose to opt out of a program with a full refund up to thirty minutes prior to the program.
