HOW CANCERCHANGED ONEWOMAN’S LIFEDETROIT, MI (JULY 20 2011)--- CANCER AFFECTS MANY FAMILIES IN DIFFERENT WAYS.
Tanisha Bolden was left motherless at the tender age of 10. For this De-troit mother, the after math of the disease led her to start a move-ment. Bolden, Founder of Bold Moves, LLC engineered the This is Why I Rock Campaign based off of her nationally recognized book, This Is Why I ROCK: A Self-Empower-ment Journal for Youth. ‘This is Why I Rock’ aims to arm today’s youth with necessary life skills through the emphasis in personal relationships, personal improvements, and goal setting & goal getting. Bolden infuses hip-hop music with real world lessons inspiring adoles-cents with ways to make independent ,yet informed personal decisions about life. “I want our young people to understand and accept the importance of being account-able in the areas of personal relationships, personal improvements and goal setting,” says Bolden. “I would hope they use the This is Why I Rock journal as a tool to develop habits of self-validation.” Bolden has partnered with teachers and administrators both locally and nationally through the This is Why I Rock National School Tour. She was the featured keynote speak-er for the Dream Girls Mentoring Program Luncheon on June 25. Bolden was a featured speaker at the Rising Above the Odds Against Me girls conference as well as the key-note speaker at Emerson Middle School’s Promotional Ceremony in Detroit. Additionally, Bolden will facilitate a This is Wy I Rock Worksop in August. Tanisha N. Bolden is the Owner/Program Director of The Bold Moves Housing Program. Understanding the stress and sadness of growing up without a mother, her mission is to provide guidance and support by empowering youth to become responsible and inde-pendent adults. Laurie Wilson is 51 years old and a single mother of four. She is a retired admin-istrative assistant for the City of Detroit Health Department. She also serves as a substitute teacher for the Oakland County school district. She was living a pretty simple life last summer. That is, till Hollywood came to Detroit. In June of 2010, Laurie Wilson spotted a flyer at a local shop that was advertising for Extras in local movies. She decided to apply. Little did she know how that ac-tion would dramatically change her life over the next several months. Just one week later, Laurie received a call to be one of the background extras for a scene in “Detroit 1-8-7” on ABC. Surprisingly, she was given an on-camera role as a detective in the very first episode. Then the door opened wide. The director liked her work, called her over and asked her to move to the main squad room where the show is centered. In that magic moment, Laurie landed a permanent role as a background actress for an ABC Prime Time Network Television Series. Here’s more about her exciting adventure.

TEW: Describe what an average filming day was like - arrival, selection, scene re-hearsals, interaction with the director, number of takes, length of shooting days. LW: My typical day began on the set at 6:45 am regardless of rain, snow, sleet, or what-ever outside. Wardrobe was selected by a wardrobe specialist. Sometimes the extras were used as stand-ins, if needed, and were given time to rehearse lines, if selected. In-teraction with the director was very limited unless he requested you. Number of takes was usually 10-12 due to camera angles, shadows, substance, and sending a variety of footage to the editor for final cut.
TEW: What are the actors like between takes? Do they converse? Is everything seri-ous? Is there a lot of tension on the set? What about egos?LW: Silliness sets in after nine hours of work anywhere so you can just imag-ine what we did for 14 hours! Of course, there was a big bas-ket at the front door for “egos” to be checked. Conversa-tion was supposed to be limited, but we are all likeable people and could not keep our mouths shut nor wipe any smiles off of our faces.
TEW: What is the most difficult or frustrating aspect of the entire acting experience for you and members of the cast? LW: In the hospital you have the “wake up and take a sleeping pill“ but on the set you have to “hurry up and wait”. You may be bored stiff for hours while sitting on hard folding chairs in-between takes. You may not get on the set at all so you must always be prepared to wait. Frankly, I found this to be the best time to network and socialize with new friends. TEW: What do Extras get paid? What attention do you get in the way of make-up and wardrobe? LW: it depends on the role, but the minimum is $64.00 per day. Hair and make-up get involved with your preparation if you are a “featured” Extra as I often was. TEW: Share some memorable moments from your filming sessions. LW: My interaction with James McDaniel sent me to heaven and back three times!!!! He is a dear man and marvelous actor. We had pranks during Halloween. I was face-to-face with an aluminum spider coming from the roof of the set but I dared not holler due to the keep silent on the set rule! The first episode was dramatic to me when the rookie cop (Jon Michaels) was shot and his wife called to let him know she was having
their first-born child. An emotional moment was when the lieutenant was won-dering if her child was killed on the school grounds after receiving vague informa-tion from Detective Fitch about a high school shooting.
TEW: What makes this story even MORE interesting is that you urged your twin 30 year-old daughters, Bianca and Nicole, to sign up to be Extras and they also landed on-camera roles.LW: Everyone knows we’ve got the goods to get the job done!! Working on the same show with your daughters creates a special pride that is very gratifying for a mother. Being on the same ABC Prime Time network television series marked our family debut in the television industry! The Michigan Film Incentives gave us that opportunity. TEW: You also went beyond television and were cast as an Extra in locally filmed movies like “Scream 4”, “Vamps” and “5 Year Engagement”. You must really enjoy this new acting career.LW: It is exciting and a lot of fun. You meet so many people on these sets in different walks of life. You can network with the other actors and crew in the Extras holding area while waiting to go before the camera. It’s a beautiful thing! TEW: You must be quite disappointed that the film credits were drastically reduced and that acting opportunities have really diminished after such a promis-ing start. What’s next for you?LW: At the stroke of the pen, my life changed drastically. I was very disap-pointed with the decision to cut the film incentive budget. Gone-too-soon for me, but I continue to work as an Extra in other local film projects. In fact, I am scheduled to appear as an Extra in the upcoming blockbuster movie, “OZ: The Great and Powerful”, being filmed at the new soundstages in Pontiac.
TEW: Any philosophical message for women who are trying to carve out a new career or activity, or just looking for something to motivate and inspire them-selves? LW: The operative word is “try”. Try any and every thing that is knocking on your door and keep trying. Follow your dream and never, ever give up.
