The airfield closed toflying in 1957, but manyveterans were emotionalwitnesses to the openingceremony.

“This is wonderful, absolutely marvellous”,said 94 year old AlbertShorrock, a former air-frames fitter at Defford.

Albert was invited tocut the tape at the offi-cial opening ceremony -which was attended byover 150 people. “Wenever thought we wouldsee the day,” he added.

RAF Defford was atop-secret airfield builtin the grounds ofCroome Park, nowowned by the NationalTrust.

It was at Defford thatwar-winning airborneradar was developed, tested and proven duringthe Second World War.

By 1945, up to 3000men and women wereserving at the base.

The secret work con-

tinued into the Cold Waryears, with virtuallyevery type of aircraftused by RAF and RoyalNavy - plus some fromthe US Air Force - beingrepresented at Defford.

The museum recordsthe achievements of themen and women of RAFDefford - service person-nel, scientists and civil-ian staff.

It is a joint venture

between the NationalTrust at Croome, andDefford Airfield HeritageGroup (DAHG) whosecured grants from theEvesham-based compa-ny Severn WasteServices, and theHeritage Lottery Fund,to restore the buildingand fit out the museum.

The total cost wasover £200,000.

The museum is

housed in a 1942 formerRAF building which hasbeen restored to its war-time appearance.

The new museum isopen to visitors toCroome Park seven daysa week from 10.30 am to4.30 pm (4pm in win-ter). For visitors whopay for admission toCroome Park in the nor-mal way (free toNational Trust mem-bers), there is no chargefor admission to theMuseum.

SWILGATE WORKS WILL PROTECT SUBSTATIONImprovements to the River Swilgate in Tewkesbury have included protectionmeasures for an electricity substation near Priors Park.

The Environment Agency, Tewkesbury Borough Council and Tewkesbury NatureReserve Ltd (TNRL) have worked together on the project, which involved loweringareas of the riverbank and floodplain, then using the material to create a flood bundbehind an electricity substation in Queen's Road. Banks have also been repairedelsewhere along the course of the river.

The small electricity substation, which is located at the edge of the floodplain, flooded in 2007 and left residents living in Priors Park without power for severaldays.

The creation of thegrounds in 1897, how-ever, was very much amunicipal enterprisewhich required volun-teers to raise money bysubscription.

Prior to that it wasmainly privately ownedwasteland, and was oncethe site of the “ThePound Wall Roadway”, aserpentine path whichfollowed the line of theancient roadway whichwas part of the mainroad via Deerhurst toGloucester.

The Pleasure Gardenswere created in 1897from subscriptions fromthe people ofTewkesbury to markQueen Victoria’sDiamond Jubilee.

As one might expect, the townspeople werenot initially enthusiastic

but eventually theBorough Surveyor creat-ed, in the words ofTewkesbury Register, “athing of beauty beyondquestion, and we hopethat it may prove a joyforever.”

Its attraction wasenhanced by the gainingof a gun from theCrimean War and abandstand, both ofwhich succumbed in theausterity of SecondWorld War.

Its nadir perhapscame during the inunda-tion of 2007, although, before and since, thevolunteers have seentheir hard work thwartedby periodic floods.

It also spurred on thevolunteers to recreatethe beauty of 1897 byencouraging townsfolkonce again to subscribeto new entrance archesto commemorate theDiamond Jubilee of

Queen Elizabeth II, ourpresent Queen.

Thanks to its Friends, the Victorian PleasureGardens, despitestraightened public cir-cumstances, will remaina joy forever.

The majority of thesecalls result in the casual-ty being brought in to usby the finder e.g. injuredhedgehogs, blackbirdsand all manner of othersmall mammals andbirds.

When we get calls tolarger casualties such asbadgers, foxes, deer orswans we send our staffout to help because ofthe risks involved inhandling these animals.

One day in Septemberwe took a call from thepolice informing usabout an emu that hadbeen reported wanderingdown a lane leading upto the A38 just south ofGloucester.

We do already havean emu, Cilla - one ofour permanent residents- so we are well awarethat there are potentialdangers in handlingbirds such as this.

We took all the detailsand exact location andcontacted the finderdirectly, who informedus that they had man-aged to herd the emuinto a fenced compoundused for storing hisworks equipment andvehicles.

We gathered togetherthe equipment that wethought we would needincluding our large

twenty feet by six feet‘run-in’ net that we usefor deer, not really hav-ing a clue how we weregoing to carry out the‘rescue’.

We got advice fromour vet regarding doserates for sedatives incase this was necessary, hitched up our stocktrailer and set off.

When we arrived, wefound that the emu, a 5-6 feet tall flightless birdwas in fact a rhea, asmaller but similar birdoriginating from SouthAmerica.

Nonetheless thesebirds are still capable ofinflicting serious injuriesso we approached care-fully and Martin swiftlygot hold of her and puther into the trailer.

She didn’t put upmuch of a fight and we

soon realised that, aswell as a nasty injury onher neck, she wasextremely underweightso we guessed that shehad been lout for sometime, struggling to findfood.

Over the next coupleof weeks she neededsome intense treatmentas she was so under-nourished and weak, wethought we were goingto lose her at one stage.

We had to tube feedher and also give herfluids by injectionsunder the skin (600mlsat a time) and she grad-ually became strongeruntil she finally startedto eat for herself.

Once she did, therewas no stopping her andshe put on 2.5kgs in the

space of just one week! She was soon well

enough to join our othertwo rheas (also perma-nent residents) and iswell on the way to fullhealth.

For this walk we shallstart from the village ofGreat Comberton andfollow part of the 88 milelong Shakespeare’sAvon Way. This tracesthe river from its sourceto where it joins theSevern at Tewkesbury.

There is no off-roadparking in GreatComberton, so pleasepark with care andrespect to residents inthe village street. It isprobably less intrusiveto park at the north endof the village, near thewar memorial.

From here, walk backup through the village, and just beforeWaterbrook House, lookfor the Public Footpath

sign to Nafford (1). Theroute is way markedwith the ‘Shakespeare’sAvon Way’ logos as wellas yellow arrows.

Bear right down thepath and follow thearrows across the fieldsfor about three quartersof a mile, until you meetthe road at Nafford (2).

Walk past NaffordHouse and at the driveturn right (3) and followthe path down betweenthe fences to emerge onto the river bank.

Go over the bridge ontop of the weir (4) andcross Nafford Lock bythe swing bridge, then

follow the path acrossthe small island. Crossthe bridge over the sec-ond weir, (5) with thewaters rushing impres-sively beneath you. Thisis a popular spot foranglers and canoeists.

Bear left along thepath until you reach agate on your right, withinformation boardsabout the John BennettNature Reserve (6).Follow the permissivepath as directed, to reachthe observation hide, which is kept locked.

As this is a ‘there andback’ walk, simply re-trace your footsteps fromthis point.

When you return toNafford Lock, note thewind-powered waterpumps in this area. These are used to pro-vide water for the wet-land habitat. The twolarger ones, closest tothe weirs, feed the GwenFitch nature reserve

(established in 2001) towhich there is no publicaccess.

As you walk backfrom Nafford to GreatComberton, away toyour right is the scarp

side of Bredon Hill, dom-inated by Battens Wood. You may also catch aglimpse of Woollas Hall -a Grade II ‘star’ listedElizabethan manor dat-ing back to the 1600s.

Kay, who grew up inKemerton, has workedin many different cre-ative industries inLondon and the SouthWest - including cos-tume design in TV andtheatre.

Being passionateabout working with nat-ural materials and gen-erally fascinated bynature, she decided tostudy taxidermy andbefore long moved backto this area to become afull-time artist.

“With a particularemphasis on workingwith fabric, I decided tocombine all the creative

skills I had learnt to pro-duce something that wascompletely original - anda more modern and

fresh take on the artform,” said Kay.

“I offer a range offramed artwork, com-posed using tanned birdskins (with feathersintact) and animal skinsas well compositionsmade entirely of dupli-cated feathers.

“The intention is tomake something beauti-ful, completely originaland abstract – whichallows us to forget thatit’s an animal and simplyfocus on the details.

“As I predominantlywork with game birdssuch as pheasants andpartridges, my workappeals to people who

are interested in fieldsports - but also to any-one that appreciateswildlife and the naturalbeauty and iridescenceof feathers.”

Everything is sourcedand hand-made to orderby Kay - from field toframe - with a deliverytime of 1-2 weeks.

Kay has a wide expe-rience of ethical sourcingand always works with-in industry standardpractice.

A small range of heroriginal framed artworkis also available fromstock. For further infor-mation see the ‘Shop’ atwww.kaydoble.com

This is a short book, but one inwhich every word is made to count. It's brevity saying so much morethan other much longer volumes.

There are two main characters, thefirst of which we know only as the"Big Man"; a badger baiter, realrough card and loner.

The second character is a newlywidowed young farmer who isstruggling to cope on his own withthe lambing season, a workloadpreviously shared with his wife, themore practical member of a lovingpartnership.

Two men, one kind, caring andgrieving, the other a manifestationof brutality.

There are beautifully describedscenes of a rural coastal landscapeand the struggles of a sheep farmer

in spring-time living asolitaryexistence and missing thelove of his life.

There are also graphic scenesinvolving the "Big Man", whichsome readers might flinch at, butthese brief passages are lost in thebeauty of the writing.

Two lonesome men, how their livesintermingle and the outcome makea great read. A story well told inbeautiful prose.

He said: “Withoutbeing approved by thelender then another firmintervenes to oversee thelegal work of your legal

This month we featurea very large door nailfound at Ashchurch.

The nail has beenhand forged and wasused to fix outer andinner timbers togetherto make the doorstronger.

Sometimes the nailswere driven into thewood and were of sucha length that the pro-tuding tip on the otherside was hammeredover to make the jointstronger, this was knowas ‘clinching’ and it ispossibly where the word‘clinch’ originated whichimplies secure as inclinching a deal.

Judging by the size ofthe nail it came from animportant door possiblyfrom a church.

The second exhibit isa bit of a mystery. Madeof lead it looks like afalse teeth bridge, wedoubt that, but if any-one can help identify itwe would love to hearfrom them.

The management of most of the parks and playgrounds within the Walton Cardi! estate has recently been taken over by Tewkesbury Borough Council. The Borough Council has proposed that the open field at the end of Starling

The Parish Council would like to gauge the views of

it is - we know many residents currently use it as a general playing field and/or to walk their dogs. We could look at dividing up the field to create an area for sports and another for dog walkers and /or general use.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater

It is a time, says DavidSlater, local ClinicalHypnotherapist andCounsellor, when manypeople feel at a loss, shut in, and can evenbecome low in spiritsand depressed.

There is always musicand the radio or TV.There are computergames and much more. Ihave long advocatedthat people take up anew hobby for the "closed season" such asknitting, crochet, paint-ing, jewellery making orcard crafting ( my ownchoice of activity).

I have had manypatients through theyears who have followedmy advice and said thatit lifted their spirits andhas lifted them out ofperiods of anxiety anddepression.

How satisfying tohear that I am not theonly one saying this.

There is a new trendof activity which is soeasily accessible to alland that is colouring-in.

As children, I am suremost of the readers ofthis column will havespent countless happyhours colouring in.Perhaps as you readnow your own childrenare happily indulging inthis habit.

The new trend is foradults to take up colour-ing in.

Indeed, in France ithas become a majorhobby trend with peoplereporting that it hashelped them dramatical-ly to reduce stress andeases neuroses as wellas just entertain them-selves.

Many adult colouringbooks are now on themarket ( easily found bytyping in "Art Therapybooks" into the searchengine or on Amazon.Indeed the books arenow equalling the saleof cookery books and insome cases are actuallyselling faster than them.

This isn't just airyfairy mumbo jumbo. DrSally Austen, a ClinicalPsychologist has saidthat she feels thatcolouring in has obviousbenefits. " You are com-pletely in the moment,

not ruminating aboutthe past or worryingabout the future.

A colouring book is alot cheaper than a spa,but it serves the samepurposes.

I would make colour-ing available on theNHS. Healthy pastimesare those that requireenough focus to blockout some of life's wor-ries.... some havingZen-like qualities."

Colouring and cre-ative activities in gener-al stimulate the creativeflow and are increasing-ly being seen as idealways to promote relax-ation and give stressrelief.

In a way what we aredoing is reverting tochildhood's proven safeand comfortable activitywhich brings us to acalmer, secure time andplace. It is also a medita-tive aid which canimprove your focus andconcentration.

Colouring in providesyou with enjoyment. Ittakes your mind off thenegative. People areseriously finding thatcolouring is healing, energizing and a soundantidepressant.

As anotherPsychologist puts it, "Colouring books are thenewest self-help books".

A regular user of thecolouring books said "When I colour I concen-trate. My breathingslows down and i moveonto a deep calm.

This is a quiet, stressfree hobby which youcan add to your arsenalof winter activities.

It is so uncomplicat-ed. Indeed it is basicallyquite simple BUT I am aserious believer that inthis day and age per-haps we need to remindourselves of how to "do"simple !!

I have purchased abook for colouring. It is100 mandalas and is anabsolute knockout book.I have only had it a dayor so but it is a delight topick up. It is a delight toenter its peaceful andcolourful world

And I recommend it toYOU!!!

David Slater

The clocks have gone back and we are in the sea-son of long evenings when we need to turn ourattention to how we can best spend our timeindoors.

Making themost of thelong winterevenings

It is estimates that 50million visits are madeeach year to the GP bypatients for minor condi-tions , that are coveredby these schemes

That means GP’s willhave more time forpatients with more seri-ous conditions , by free-ing up their valuabletime.

The conditions thisservice covers includecoughs, colds, constipa-tion, hay fever ,headaches , and nappyrash.

I do hope the pilot is agreat success and that

this new service will beextended to the whole ofGloucestershire in April.

Tewkesbury Direct readers will be very interested,I am sure, in a new pilot scheme that has juststarted in Gloucester.
