RE: 2020 TCGA Annual Meeting & Cotton Trade Show

With the dawn of a new decade, it would only be right to reflect on the one we

just finished. What has been accomplished over the past decade in Texas

cotton? Although there have been many ups and down, Texas cotton production

blossomed over the last decade. If you look back at Texas cotton production

from 1990 – 2003, Texas produced only five crops over five million bales

during that span, and none over six million. From 2004 to 2019, Texas cotton

production exceeded five million bales in twelve of those years, including nine

of those years over six million bales! 2019 will mark the sixth consecutive year

we have seen Texas cotton production top five million bales including a record-

breaking 9.3 million bales in 2017! We must remember the drought years as

well. There was a three-year stretch (2011 – 2013) that all produced less than

five million bales, including a 3.5 million bale crop in 2011. Those years

proved that even with significant advancements, we still must have help from

Mother Nature to produce decent crops!

Several factors have contributed to driving Texas cotton production higher over

the past decade! The eradication of the boll weevil has certainly driven

production higher. The investment in this program by cotton producers, the

state of Texas and the Federal Government cannot be overstated!

Advancements in seed genetics is a contributing factor as well. The expansion of

cotton production in the Texas Panhandle is another contributing factor. Carson

County Gin, L.P. became a TCGA member in 2004. That began the trend of

super gins being constructed in the Texas Panhandle that has taken place over

the last decade! All this to say, the last decade has been quite a ride for Texas

cotton! Many factors contributed to the success of Texas cotton over the last

decade, these are just a few of the highlights!

“A New Decade Dawns for Texas Cotton” has been chosen as the theme for

TCGA’s 2020 Annual Meeting & Cotton Trade Show. A new decade offers the

chance for the Texas cotton industry to reset and prepare for the challenges that

lie ahead. When looking back at what has happened over the past decade, you

cannot help but be excited about what lies ahead for Texas cotton!

As we enter this new decade, contamination is a huge issue for Texas cotton.

We should be encouraged by the research advancements that are being made to

address the issue in our USDA-ARS ginning laboratories and other research

institutions. There is a still a long way to go, but with continued research and

the industry’s continued effort on education, WE HAVE TO TACKLE this issue

in the years to come. In 2030, it will be very interesting to look back and see

exactly how the issue was addressed and conquered!

A wet autumn and a challenging labor situation extended the season for many

West Texas ginners. When looking back at 2019, most West Texas ginners

would tell you production tallied much less than they originally expected. This

falls right in line with what the statistics service reported throughout the Fall. It

was just one of those years where the August and September heat drove the crop

backwards!

South Texas ginners reaped the benefits of a gin season that included very little

wet weather. This was a welcome change, especially on the upper coast where

wet weather conditions, storms and hurricanes had decimated crops in recent

years, and wreaked all kinds of havoc in ginning the wet cotton. The dry

climate in August and September was a welcome change in that region!

Even with the challenges of the past year, an estimated 6.4 million bales are

expected when the books are closed. Cumulatively, 2019 should be considered

another positive year! Overall, things stand in pretty good shape right now for

2020 prospects. As always, we are going to need help from Mother Nature to

provide some moisture in the spring and throughout the growing season!

TCGA is preparing for another Annual Meeting & Cotton Trade Show! Join

your fellow ginners and allied industry in Lubbock on April 2 & 3, 2020.

You can find all related information for TCGA’s 113th Annual Meeting &

Cotton Trade Show including a schedule of events, how to make hotel

reservations, how to pre-register and fill out forms for all other events at

www.tcga.org. All gin show related information will be posted there!

Take this opportunity to educate company directors, stockholders, and other key

personnel on the role you as a ginner play in the industry. This is a time for you

and your employees to generate some new ideas that will improve the efficiency

of your gin plant in 2020! Start the new decade on a positive note and join us in

Lubbock! The TCGA staff, officers and executive committee looks forward to

joining you there!
