Week NINE Term Two 2018

Tuesday Telegraph

Texas P -10 State School

Principal News

Last week I highlighted some of the areas

of focus to ensure we are best prepared for

this flu season and remain as healthy as

possible with high levels of attendance.

This year our whole school attendance is

currently at 93%, exactly matching our

2018 target. This is a figure to be proud of

and can only be achieved through

consistent commitment to learning from

our entire school community.

Student attendance for very good reasons

attracts a high amount of attention,

however perhaps a better way to phrase

our emphasis would be aiming to

eliminate all non-essential absences. I

appreciate given our location students

will occasionally need to be absent for

required appointments, and as stated

last week, if students are sick they are

best placed to recover at home and

minimise the risk of sharing their illness.

Thank you to the vast majority of families

who do adopt this approach and I

apologise if it causes some angst at home

with your children when they really are

too sick to attend but still want to come to

school. I would argue this is a lovely

problem to have as it shows a dedication

to their schooling which we certainly want

to grow and foster.

Finally, with the end of term approaching

please engage with your children in

relation to how they are progressing with

their assessments. Feel free to contact

your child’s teacher if you believe further

support is required to assist your

son/daughter in understanding what they

are currently learning, how they are going

and what they need to do to demonstrate

what they’ve learnt (how they are being

assessed).

Have a great week

Justin.

Tips for Creating Resilient Families

12th June 2018

Summarised from Andrew Fullers article

Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficult situations.

Andrew Fuller lists the 10 steps to follow to create resilient families:

Promote belonging

Children are most resilient when they have three types of belonging; a

sense of being part of a family; having different friendships to belong

to; having an adult outside their family who connects with them.

Have some down time

Find some time each week to just be at home without anything

structured happening. Quiet times allow children to develop creativity

and ingenuity.

Family rituals

Family rituals are string predictors of resilience. It could be the family

walk after dinner, the Sunday roast, Friday night pizza, children will

later on reminisce about these rituals.

Love kids for their differences

When families function well, individuals in the family are allowed to be

different and to be loved for those differences. Encourage your children

to be strongly individual and proud of their differences.

Be clear about who is in charge

Authoritative parenting allows children to feel safe, have clear

boundaries and flourish. Some parents fear that if they take charge

that they will lose the friendship of their children, but often the reverse

is true.

All School News Prep Ms Nettie

Students have been very busy last week and this week completing assessment tasks related to

the subjects they have been learning about. If you check your curriculum snapshot for this term,

you can see what tasks we are working on. Every year the prep classroom has 100 days at school celebration.

Prep students have been eagerly crossing off each day of attendance at school. We are getting closer to our

target of 100 Days at Prep! We will be holding a 100 Days of Prep celebration that will include a morning of

activities and a mini concert of songs and poems. We will be holding this celebration early next term. We would

like to invite parents and grandparents to join us. I will send home more information by the end of week 11.

ABC Reading Eggs

REMINDER: Our amazing Reading Eggs program is available for the rest of the year and is a great

opportunity to support your child’s learning at home. This program supports students learning of

letter/sound knowledge as well as segmenting and blending sounds. Each level ends with a book that

allows the students to put their decoding skills into action.

ClassDojo

Thank you to all the parents who are using our ClassDojo. I am really enjoying using this app as a

communication tool to send photos and information about your child and the class throughout the

week.

This week I had the pleasure of hearing the story of Baguens Theus, a man who was once a child in the

Compassion Child Sponsorship Program. Baguens was born in Haiti and at the age of 5, due to extreme

poverty, became a sponsor child in the Compassion program. This enabled him and his mother to be well fed,

have clean drinking water, quality shelter, and just as importantly Baguens was able to attend school. For only

$50/MTh, his sponsor father was able to provide these things through the program for almost 15 yrs. Baguens,

now a father of 3, has since completed school, has 2 University Master’s degree’s, served 5 years in the Haitian

congress, and is now training up to go back to Haiti and run for President and change his country! All through

one mans sponsorship! WOW!

Year Five

We have

been

working col-

laboratively

with the

students in

Year 3, on special space projects. Year 5 students are

learning about planets, while the Year 3 students are

learning about Earth. Students will present their

posters together comparing Earth to a specific planet.

Both classes are enjoying the chance to demonstrate

collaborative learning.
