Historical Note
In 1886, the Johnson Brothers Coal Company opened an underground bituminous coal mine just south of the Texas & Pacific Railroad Company line between Fort Worth and Abilene. Contracted to provide coal for the nearby railway, it could not meet its production goals. After the firm failed to pay its employees, the miners struck for back pay and production plummeted. Facing insurmountable difficulties, the Johnson Brothers in fall 1888 sold their holdings to a newly organized, New York based successor, the Texas & Pacific Coal Company.
Richard Dickey Hunter, president of this new firm, offered the former Johnson miners lower wages than his predecessors. He proceeded to build a company town that he named Thurber after board member Horace K. Thurber. Hunter began bringing in both American and immigrant miners who were willing to work for his wages. In time, the company expanded its underground mines and substantially increased the volume of their production.

In 1897 the Green and Hunter Brick Company, a subsidiary organization, began manufacturing both construction and paving bricks at Thurber. Initially it used barely sellable nut- and pea-sized coal to fuel the brick kilns, later employing natural gas for this purpose. Other subsidiaries included the Texas & Pacific Manufacturing and Mercantile Company, which operated the stores and many of the other services, and the Thurber Earthen Products Company, which ran a large rock crusher west of Thurber.
During the early twentieth century, railways began switching from coal to crude oil as fuel for their steam locomotives. This change prompted coal operators to begin seeking ways to diversify. William Knox Gordon, then manager of the mines at Thurber, began exploring for petroleum west of Thurber, an area where experts said large amounts of oil and gas would not be found. As early as 1915, his crews struck minor oil and gas deposits. Then in October 1917, one of his drilling rigs struck part of the huge Ranger Oil Field, a bonanza that opened West Texas to large-scale oil exploration and production.
Because of the revenues coming from oil at Ranger, the coal company in quick order became an oil company. In 1918, it changed its name to Texas Pacific Coal and Oil Company, and the corporate offices moved to Thurber from New York City. Despite this shift, reduced sales of coal combined with increased wage demand from miners prompted the firm to begin closing its mines during the early 1920s. Production ended at the Thurber brick plant in 1931. Two years later the company offices moved to Fort Worth as the firm continued to focus on petroleum.
In addition to producing crude oil, the Texas & Pacific Coal and Oil Company also operated its own pipelines and refineries. During the 1920s, it opened a chain of TP gasoline service stations that sold retail products throughout North Texas and Oklahoma. The firm continued operations into the early 1960s, when its board of directors decided to sell the firm. The buyer with the highest offer was the Frankfort Oil Company, a division of the Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Inc., a distiller of liquor. The sale took place on 1 November 1963 and the Texas & Pacific Coal and Oil Company ceased to exist.

the arranger. Files that were in reverse chronological order were placed in

material was found, such as with the depletion allowance material. In the
arrangement of the ledgers the subsidiary companies were placed in chronological
order.
The records are arranged in nineteen series:
