Texas State Trombone Symposium

The 2013 Texas State Trombone Symposium will be held from February 22 - 24 on the campus of Texas State University - San Marcos. This 3rd annual event will take place at Evans Auditorium in the Evans Liberal Arts Building and the Recital Hall of the School of Music. High school and middle school trombonists (grades 6-12), college trombonists, adult amateur and professional level trombonists are all eligible to participate. The 2013 Texas State Trombone Symposium will feature Boston University professor, Don Lucas, jazz solo artist and Director of Jazz Studies at Claflin University, Mitch Butler and the award-winning ensemble JazzBonez. Symposium activities will include newly organized solo competitions, concerts, master classes, exhibits, warm-up sessions, a jazz night at Austin’s Elephant Room and the opportunity to play in a symposium-wide massed trombone choir. Mitch is also a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a Doctor of Music Arts degree in Music Performance. Mitch was the trombonist and leader of the jazz/fusion group Nebulous Jazztet from 2001 to 2006 and is currently leader of Modus Bone and the Mitch Butler Trio. These groups serve as entertainment and educational ensembles for the Midlands of South Carolina, as well as the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. These groups perform in venues ranging from night clubs to jazz festivals to music seminars. Butler was also the solo trombonist in the well renowned North Carolina Jazz Repertoire Orchestra led by Jazz Trumpeter and Educator Jim Ketch from 1999 to 2006. Mitch was a member of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra headed by world-renowned trumpeter Irvin Mayfield from 2008 to 2010. In February of 2010 the N.O.J.O. won the Grammy Award for large jazz ensemble with the release of the recording Book One - a recording that Mitch is featured on. He is also the solo trombonist for the international award winning jazz group JazzBonez featuring six trombones and rhythm section. Contributions to The New Five Jazz Project based in Austin, Texas and the John Brown Jazz Orchestra based in Durham, NC have also proven to be important to his musical development as a performer, composer, and educator. Butler has also performed and/or recorded with musical greats such as John Brown, Curtis Fuller, Derrick Gardner, Vincent Gardner, Aaron Graves, Benny Green, Tim Hagans, Slide Hampton, Tom Harrell, Andre Hayward, Conrad Herwig, Brad Leali, Branford Marsalis, Jason Marshall, Bob Mintzer, Melton Mustafa, Dick Oates, Bill Reichenbach, Rufus Reid, Herlin Riley, Stephen Riley, Adonis Rose, Darius Rucker, Grady Tate, Billy Taylor, Gregory Tardy, The Temptations, Ray Vega, Fred Wesley, and Ron Westray among many others.

Much time has also been invested as an educator in jazz studies. Dr. Butler was named the Director of Jazz Studies and Assistant Professor of Music at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC in 2009. He has also invested time in music throughout the community, having provided private lessons in trombone and jazz studies as well as participating in clinics/workshops throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, the Southeast, and central Texas. Butler has also held faculty and teaching positions at several institutions including Durham School of the Arts, East Carolina University, North Carolina Central University, Elon University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and the University of Texas at Austin.

Don Lucas was educated as a Fulbright Scholar to London’s Guildhall School of Music (“Premiere Prix” and Advanced Solo Studies Diplomas), Texas Tech University (MM and BM), North Texas State University, The University of Houston (DMA work) and The Berklee College of Music. His principal teachers include Denis Wick, Robert Deahl, Al Lube, Carsten Svanberg, Phil Wilson, Michel Becquet, Allen Barnhill, John Marcellus, Phil Wilson, Leon Brown, and Dave Maser.

Dr. Dorsey Mitchell Butler III is a native of Raleigh, NC and currently calls Columbia, SC home. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music Performance from East Carolina University.

Mr. Lucas has performed with The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, The Empire Brass Quintet, Santa Fe Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra, the American Classic Trombone Quartet (founder), and with many orchestras. Internationally, Mr. Lucas has performed recitals and taught master classes throughout the world. Engagements in the United Kingdom included Wigmore Hall (London), The British Trombone Society Festival, The Repton Brass Festival, The Royal Northern College of Music, Cheathams School of Music (Manchester), The Royal Academy of Music (London), The Guildhall School of Music (London), and The Royal Scottish Academy of Music (Glasgow). Engagements in Russia included The Tchaikovsky Conservatory (Moscow), The Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory (St. Petersburg), and The Fine Arts Institute (Vladivostok). Other international engagements included, Korean Trombone Festival, Brazilian Trombone Association National Festival (Rio de Janeiro), the Conservatoire Superieur (Paris, France); Trombones de Costa Rica International Brass Festival (San Jose); The International Trombone Festival (Feldkirch, Austria), The International Trombone Symposium (Melbourne, Australia), and three trombone ensemble camps in South Korea.

In the United States, Mr. Lucas has performed as soloist, recitalist, and clinician. Engagements included Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie; Terrace Theatre at the Kennedy Center; The Juilliard School; The Eastman School of Music; The United States Army Orchestra Band “Pershing’s Own”; The United States Naval Academy Band; The West Point United States Military Academy Band; the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic; the New York Conference for Brass Scholarships; the MasterWorks Festival; the Eastern Trombone Workshop (Washington, DC); Harmony Ridge Brass Festival (Vermont); 76 Trombones+4 Trombone Festival, Las Vegas; College Band Directors National Association Convention; The Texas Music Educators Association Convention; Texas Bandmasters Association Convention; the Christian Artists Music Festival (Colorado); Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute; the Las Vegas Music Festival; and over a hundred appearances at universities, festivals, schools, and camps. Mr. Lucas’ honors include the only Premier Prix Diploma ever awarded to a brass player in the history of the Guildhall School of Music (London); Bronze Medal L’unamite & Finalist, Toulon International Solo Competition; First Prize Winner ITA Frank Smith International Trombone Solo Competition; First Place “Fellow,” Harmony Ridge Brass Festival; First Place Solo & Group Competitions, National Christian Artists Seminar; and First Prize, The American Classic Trombone Quartet, Summit Brass International Brass Chamber Group Competition. Mr. Lucas has performed under the baton of many distinguished conductors, including Ivan Fisher, Leonard Slatkin, John Adams, Hugh Wolf, and Christopher Hogwood. He has recorded with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the American Wind Symphony. Solo and Brass Chamber Music selections were recorded on two CDs for North South Recordings and Warwick Music Publishers, UK. He has released two Solo CDs: Hymns for Trombone and Cantabile.

Mr. Lucas has premiered/commissioned many pieces for trombone from many composers, including Fisher Tull, Jacques Casterede, Derek Bourgeouis, Adam Gorb, Elena Roussanova Lucas, Franz Cibulka, David Maslanka, Theodore Antoniou, Alun Hoddinott, Gary D. Belshaw, and Daniel Schnyder. Previous teaching appointments include Texas Tech University, Eastern New Mexico University, Sam Houston State University, and public school teaching in Fairfax County, Virginia; Wake County, North Carolina; and Brenham and Southland, Texas.

Mr. Lucas is a performing artist and clinician for the S. E. Shires Co. of Hopedale, Massachussetts.
