Animation

Definition from Wikipedia:

Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. It is an optical illusion of motion due to the phenomenon of persistence of vision.

This animation moves at 10 frames per second.

The bouncing ball animation (above) consists of these 6 frames.

Traditional Animation

• Cel animation

• ‘Cel’ comes from ‘Celluloid’ - transparent acetate sheet

• traditionally hand-drawn

• many techniques (read further on Wiki)

2D Animation

• Several techniques to produce an animation

• You can use MS-PowerPoint to make one

• Macromedia Flash is very common

• It’s Frame/Time-Based animation

Terminology

• Sprites - the objects that move during the animation

• Tweening - the automatic creation of the necessary motion of the sprite between the start and end locations (keyframes)

• Motion tweening

• Shape tweening

Making 3D Animation

• Modeling - create/model 3D objects then add color, texture, and material

• Animating - establish how many frames and decide on the specific animation that will take place (using keyframe & tweening)

• Rendering - each frame is rendered one at a time
