Meet Preview:

If you want to catch the UMBC Retrievers in action this spring season, then makeyour way out to the University of Maryland College Park this Saturday as theymake their one local appearance. With almost every healthy athlete in action thisweekend, come out and support the UMBC Track & Field team.

In the sprinting events look to the continued dominance of Mercedes Jackson in the100 meter dash, only a weekend removed from scoring school records in both the100 and 200 meter dashes. Ebonique Jones should also make an impact afterrecording a #8 All Time performance in the event a week ago. Senior Imani Colbertand junior Chowan Brightful should also continue their work in the 100 m hurdles.

In the distance events, the full slate of competitors toes the line for the first timethis outdoor season. Highlights should include IC4A qualifiers Charles Bolinger, PatHairfield, and Scott Heydrick in the 800 meters. Roy Jones, opens the season in hismain event, the steeple, a year after capturing eighth place at the conference meetand recording the #3 All Time performance last year. Even though the 3,000 metersis not contested at the Conference meet, look for some fireworks with leading crosscountry runners Todd Cowing and Brandan McGee participating.

In the field, every thrower will be competing in all three of the main throwing event(hammer, shot put, and discus). Look for continued dominance in the shot put byAmanda Deller and Aaron Brooks. But also keep an eye on rising hammer talentsChris Nash, Cameron McDearmon, Chrissy Robinson, and Monica Hagenauer.

Highlights in the jumping events should include Aboshioma Obemeata in the triple jump and Ebonique Jones in the long jump, the pole vault will feature Laura Walkerand Sean Kshmetski, and the high jump will have Brightful and Mo Drammeh.

Mercedes Jackson finishes 2 nd in both the 100m and 200m, setting school records inboth events (11.81 and 24.05 respectively)Paulette Fogle runs 3 rd fastest 400 meter hurdles in school history with a 1:03.87clockingChowan Brightful finished sixth in the 100 meter hurdles with a personal best and #3All Time Mark of 14.53.Chrissy Robinson threw the fourth best hammer throw in school history with a 144-01toss.Chris Nash threw the 8 th best hammer throw in school history with a 151 10 mark Malte Bertram took over the seventh best mark in the javelin with a 150 foot mark

Entering the year as the school recordholder in both the pentathlon and

heptathlon, junior Chowan Brightfubegan the transitioning to making abigger impact in individual events. It

paid off when she took over theindoor school record in the high jumpand moved up to #2 in the 60 meter

hurdles. In one meet thus far thisseason, she quickly moved up the 100meter hurdle list with a personal best

and #3 All Time 14.53.

Kalane Abbey:

With many amazing freshmen performances so far this year, Kalane Abbey has beenputting together one of the most solid and well rounded years of the bunch. During theindoor season she made her mark in the 400 meter dash, moving up to fifth on the AllTime list with a 57.38. She additionally could be found on the anchor of the schoolrecord 4x400 meter relay. In her first meet during the outdoor season she made a mark

on the outdoor track record books taking over the ninth position on both the 200 metersand 400 meters lists.

Aaron Brooks:

Trying to figure out who the best thrower in UMBC history can be a difficult task with alarge collection of superb athletes having entered the circle. However, senior AaronBrooks name must in the conversation. This past winter he smashed his school record inthe shot put by over two feet, moving it up to 53 6.25. It appears to be only a matter of time before he takes down the outdoor shot put record and he could make a run in thediscus, an event where he is the third best performer in school history. Brooks also addssupport in the weight throw (#7 All Time) and the hammer (#6 All Time). With a seasonleft before graduation, he could begin to strengthen his grip on the record books.
