Page 2: tga, jxpjhvonline.com/clients/jhvonline/passplan.pdf(BRNG, all); Zantac 75 (PFC); Metamucil capsules & coarse Milled original texture unflavored. The following Metamucil products contain

in danger of having recognizable Chametz "drippings" on them from containers that may not have been totally clean when they were disposed of.

For more information about kashering your kitchen,

please see the Star-K website at:

www.star-k.com/kashrus/kk-passover-kashering.htm

w 0 w In general, the purpose of cleaning is to find recognizable pieces of Chametz. Scrubbing areas or toys not used for

food is unnecessary.

bb Kitniot bb

bAshkenazic Jews do not eat any foods on Pesach which contain Kitniot. This includes:

Anise, Aspartame, Beans, Buckwheat, Canola oil, Caraway, Chickpeas, Coriander, Corn,

Corn oil, Corn syrup/Glucose syrup, Cumin, Fennel, Fenugreek, Flax seeds, Kasha, Kimmel,

Lentils, Licorice, Lucerne, Lupine, Millet, MSG, Mustard, Peanuts, Peas, Popcorn, Poppy seeds, Rice, Saffron, Sesame, Sorbitol, Soy, String beans, Sunflower seeds, Tofu, Vetch.

bThe use of peanut oil is questionable for use by Ashkenazim on Pesach.

Virgin Olive Oil and Olive Oil Sprays needs a Pesach hashgocha.

bThere are products on the market for Passover that contain Kitniot, especially those imported from France and

other European countries. These Kitniot products are often in the form of candy. Many of these products will say

"LeOchlay Kitniyos" on the packaging. Note: Many Israeli

products marked "Kosher for Passover" contain Kitniot since Sephardim eat many of these foods. Check the ingredients. Please note that dextrose and glucose are generally corn derivatives.

Shmura Matzoh must be used for both sedarim.

Egg matzohs, grape matzohs, chocolate covered matzohs, and Passover Tam Tams are kneaded with "Mei Perot" and may be used only by children or the elderly who cannot eat regular matzoh. Naturally all matzoh must have Pesach supervision, since regular matzohs are chametz.

Every house contains hundreds of products - all of which should be examined before being used for Pesach. Included now is a basic list to help you get started.

Products that already have Passover certification on the packaging may not necessarily be listed here.

All processed products without special Passover supervision MUST be purchased prior to Pesach.

Matzoh

Best wishes from Young Israel of Houston,

and in appreciation to Vicki Samuels and the Jewish Herald-Voice

for once again sponsoring the printing of the YIH 2011 Abridged Pesach Planner.

O Convection ovens are very difficult to kasher. If necessary, please speak to the Rabbi.

O Broiler pans cannot be kashered for Pesach. If you wish to kasher the broiler part of your oven, a new or disposable pan should be purchased. Even if you are not kashering the broiler, it must be cleaned thoroughly.

Self-Cleaning Ovens O A self-cleaning oven is kashered by running a three-hour self-clean cycle.

O Before kashering your self-cleaning oven, it should be cool and unused for 24 hours.

O Special care should be taken to clean the inside of the door area and the inside of the seal on your self-cleaning

oven BEFORE kashering.

O It is recommended to thoroughly clean the area beyond the seal, both on the door and on the outside of the oven prior kashering.

O After you run a self-clean cycle for three hours, your oven should be kashered. The dirt inside your oven should be reduced to ash and carbonized residue. If any stains are left on the door, clean the remnants manually.

O If you have an older oven and the interior surface of your oven is damaged or the coils do not function

properly, you may have a problem kashering your oven effectively.

REMEMBER - All ovens should be cool and

unused for 24 hours prior to kashering.

M Microwave Ovens M

As the technology of microwaves has changed over the

years, more and more Poskim agree that they should not

be kashered for Pesach. However, if you must kasher your microwave, this is the procedure:

M To kasher a microwave oven, it should first be thoroughly cleaned and not used for 24 hours.

M A clean utensil filled with water is then placed in the oven and the oven is turned on. The water should boil for fifteen minutes. M The floor of the microwave should then be changed or covered with plastic wrap.

REMEMBER - All kashering should be finished by

12:06 PM on Monday, April 18th !!

S Cleaning For Pesach S

T All floors must be washed or vacuumed well.

T The bag in your vacuum should be emptied by 12:06 PM

on Monday, April 18th.

T One should have a separate broom & dustpan for Pesach.

T Benchers from the rest of the year should be put away for Pesach.

T Seforim that are brought to the table during the year should be checked for crumbs before you bring them to the table on Pesach.

T Candlesticks/Tray: Clean thoroughly. They should not be put under hot water in a Kosher for Pesach sink.

T Jewelry: Jewelry that comes in contact with food (like rings) should be cleaned before the holiday.

T If it is very difficult to clean behind your refrigerator and

freezer, it need not be moved.

T All shelves and drawers should be cleaned well before

using them for Pesach. It is also a good idea to reline those areas where food and dishes are kept.

T Garbage Cans inside the house: Clean to make certain that there is no Chametz on the inside or outside of the cans. (Having a child hose them out in the backyard can be a helpful time saver.)

T Garbage Cans outside the house: This is a good time of year to hose out the inside and outside of those big garbage cans that the city has provided for our homes. Remember to make certain to eliminate any Chametz that you may come

into contact with on those cans. It is not necessary to over-obsess while cleaning the big cans, as they are owned by the city.

T Recycling Bins: While you are hosing out the garbage cans, remember to hose out your Recycling Bins. These are

O/U certified products in the following categories are acceptable as Kosher

for Passover, even if they are not listed individually on our extended list,

when bearing O/U certification on the label.

polishes, and scouring pads); unflavored regular coffee (not instant or decaffeinated); frozen fish;

unprocessed raw meat or poultry (including ground); extra virgin olive oil; non-iodized salt; granulated

sugar; unflavored regular tea bags (not decaffeinated); bottled water; unflavored seltzer.

Quinoa seed – Quinoa is a grain that originally comes from the Andes Mountains of South America. It is a species of goosefoot, and has become popular for its wholesome seeds.

For those who eat quinoa: The OU has written at http://www.oukosher.org/

index.php/passover/article/7555 “Quinoa is not one of the

five grains that can create chametz (wheat, oat, barley, spelt and rye). Nonetheless, there is a difference of opinion among Rabbinic decisors (machloketh haposkim) as to whether quinoa is considered kitniyoth (Ashkenazic custom is not to eat kitniyoth on Pesach). Ask your Rabbi for his guidance.”

The star-k posted the following alert at http://www.star-k.org/alerts/alerts-February2011.htm "As a result of a recent investigation, we have found it possible

that quinoa's kosher for Passover status is compromised when it grows or is processed in the proximity of certain crops. Therefore, Quinoa will only be accepted with reliable Kosher for Passover supervision."

The cRc posted an alert on March 22, 2011 at http://www.crcweb.org/passover_2011%20alerts.php “The cRc approves the use of whole grain quinoa for Pesach if (1) The quinoa is imported exclusively from Bolivia, which should be

listed on the label (Ancient Harvest imports from Bolivia). (2) The quinoa must be carefully inspected by hand before Pesach. This is done by spreading one layer of quinoa at a time on a board or plate and checked to be sure that there are no other grains or foreign matter mixed in with the quinoa. (3) This does not apply to Quinoa flour which is not permitted on Passover.”

If you are going away before Sunday night April 17th and

nobody will be staying in your house over Pesach:

S Pick one small room in your house for your bedikah.

S Make a bedikah the night before you leave without a bracha.

S Sign up on the Rabbi's early chametz sale sheet.

If others will be staying in your house: S You must clean all of the rooms that will be used.

S Any room you did not clean must be closed off (with tape

or closed doors).

If you are going away on Sunday night April 17th or

Monday April 18th:

S Make a bedikah with a bracha on Sunday night before you leave.

S Burn your chametz at the proper time by taking it with you to burn or giving it to somebody to burn for you.

Ta'anit Bechorim

Ta'anit Bechorim takes place this year on Monday, April 18th. All male firstborn or fathers of young male firstborn must fast or attend a siyum. A siyum will take place at Young Israel immediately after davening, which starts at 6:00 AM for the first minyan and 8:00 AM for the second minyan.

F Erev Pesach F Chametz should not be eaten after 10:49 AM on Monday morning, April 18th. All chametz must be disposed of by 12:06 PM. After burning the chametz, the final

following week no preparations for the meal on Monday night April 25th may begin for the Monday night Yom Tov meal until after lighting candles at 8:40 PM on that day.

a Buying chametz after Pesach a

Several of our local grocery stores are owned by Jews. Therefore, chametz should not be purchased there for 4-6 weeks after Pesach. It is okay to purchase pure chametz

products immediately after Pesach from the following (alphabetized) list: Costco, CVS, Family Dollar Stores., Foodarama, Food Town, HEB, Kroger's, Randall's, Sam's Club, Target, Walgreens, Wal-mart, Whole Foods. If you are unsure of other stores, please check with the Rabbi.

Note: Bakeries & Restaurants that are under HKA

supervision are acceptable right after Pesach.

b Sefirat HaOmer b

There is a Mitzvah to count the Omer for seven weeks, beginning on the second night of Pesach. The Mitzvah is to count both weeks and days. One makes a Bracha each time they count. If a person forgot to count at night, they can count during the day the next day without a Bracha, and continue making the Bracha the following night. If a person omitted an entire

day (night and day), they continue counting but without a Bracha. There are many versions of this year‟s Sefirat HaOmer counting chart available. You may access some of them by selecting the

YIH Pesach Planner link at

then please check the CRC website at

http://www.crcweb.org/ for more information.

Buying For Pesach

When buying items for Pesach, please make sure

the item is marked "Kosher for Passover" or “jxpk raf”. Some stores may erroneously display non-Pesach food as Kosher for the holiday.

Mechirat Chametz Selling Chametz

Not so long ago every Jewish home totally emptied their house of all chametz before the holiday of Pesach. With the advent of freezers and preservatives, many people now

choose to hold onto their chametz until after Pesach. Accordingly, a legal mechanism has become popular that allows you to sell your chametz to a non-Jewish person for the duration of the holiday.

All chametz which is sold must be stored away in cabinets or closets by the time of the sale, and tape should be applied there to remind us not to open them. The chametz should not be locked up. Food that is sold by Rabbi Wender must be in their designated locations by 12:06 PM on Monday, April 18th. Chametz sold through Rabbi Wender can once again be used on

Tuesday night April 26th after 9:15 PM.

If you would like Rabbi Wender to arrange for the sale of your Chametz you can download a copy of the YIH sale of Chametz form by selecting the YIH Pesach Planner

link at http://yihouston.org or at http://PesachPlanner.org . Mail-in forms must be received at Young Israel of Houston by Wednesday, April 13, 2011. If done in person, one must

meet with Rabbi Wender by Sunday, April 17, 2011.

V Bedikat chametz V

On Sunday night April 17th after 8:30 PM, Bedikat chametz is performed. After reciting the bracha, a candle or flashlight should be used to check the entire house. This is

not a symbolic search or only a game to find the pieces of bread which were scattered around the house. All areas which may have contained chametz should be searched.

After the bedika, one should make a verbal nullification of chametz in a language that one understands.
