1 Volume 38, Issue 2, 2017 Important News The Dennis Frye Memorial Ride and Oaks Park weekend are coming up immediately. The ride will be Sunday, Augiust 5th, starting at 11:00 am from Jim Dandy Drive-In at 9626 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland. The Bike Show and Picnic will be Sunday August6 th at Oaks Amusement Park, Area 3, Portland 10:00 to 3:00. We know a lot of people pull out their prized bike on Saturday and spend the day cleaning it ready for the picnic on Sunday. This year, for a change, we propose you pull out the bike on Friday to make sure it starts etc, then come on the ride on Sat- urday. Be brave, tell your other half you are going for a ride with “Patina”, hose it off and let the wind do the rest. If you have never been to Larch Mountain, you are in for a treat The Columbia River Scenic Highway and then 14 miles up the windy road to the top. A short walk to the summit rewards with a spectacular all-around view of five mountains, Hood, Adams, Jefferson, St Helens and Rainier. Bring your now well-ridden steed to the picnic and show it off in its natural glory. Now you can say “Yes, it’s a bit dirty.. be- cause I ride it!” Meet old friends (some are very old) and join us for the best burger you will have had all morning. See you there! The more things change… New management for the newsletter. I was all set to hit the ground running in my return as your news-letter editor, and promptly tripped over my own feet. At the Corvallis Show, Sam Justice had approached me with concerns about delays in newsletter publication. I has also been considering this, after speaking with Steve Caffey, the outgoing newsletter editor about his own concerns over time constraints due to his work. I’m now retired, and I began to form the idea of resuming the job when Sam brought it up. I won’t bore you with details, but after so many years away from the job, it’s been a difficult and time-consuming effort to round up appropriate com-puter software and the hardware to run it on to resume the job of newsletter editor after so many years away from it. Suffice to say that after several false starts, and a bit of scrambling among my old computer stash, I’ve finally gotten a setup that can work with the documents that the previous editor provided me to work with. So, here I am, typing my re-introduction, over a month after I had intended to be doing it. Bear with me, it’s going to take a bit to get up to speed after all these years away. Once I get this issue put to bed, I should be able to keep them coming at fairly regular intervals. Carl Best

President’s Page

Our treasurer, John Blumthal, recently undertook to write to non-renewing members. His report will provide more information, but I want to thank John for undertaking this long discussed project and for bringing in a flood of renewals. I also want to thank the members who responded to John’s appeal. I appreciate your faith in our club. This is especially true in light of the lack of a reg-ular newsletter until now and the increase in dues effective July 1. There have been problems with getting the newsletter out. Carl Best has undertaken to do the newsletter and George Kraus has offered advice about setting up the newsletter in a fashion similar to his very successful newsletters for oNe and the Alfa Romeo club. We expect to return to a regular publication schedule. I will keep after this. I understand that the newsletter is the essential life blood of our club. As always, one of the biggest problems is assembling sufficient material for th newsletter. Please submit pieces concerning your history in the hobby, favorite bikes and rides and current rides, projects and motorcycle history. I know from talking with members that there are plenty of interesting sto-ries out there. Let’s share them. We will also publish ads for members bikes and parts. I get emails from members about club maters. If you want to have them published, let me know. Please submit pictures as jpegs and written material in rich text format. Email Carl if you have questions regarding format of submis-sions. [Carl, please indicate the email address for these inquir-ies.] The electronic version of the newsletter will be in color, and it is much cheaper for the club, but we will continue to mail hard copes of the newsletter to members who indicate that they want to receive it. It has been a while since the last president’s page. There is much to report. Our “Officers’” meeting last October was produc-tive. I’ll underline again that the “Officers’” meeting is open to any interested member and that it is an excellent opportunity to be heard by the people who get things done in this club and to vol-unteer to do your part. The Annual General Meeting in April was also productive. Unfortunately the attendance at both of these important business meetings continues to be disappointing.

Last September some of our members rode in the Distinguished Gentlemens’ Ride, a benefit for prostate cancer and suicide pre-vention research. A picture of myself, our treasurer and our sec-retary is attached. The charity is well worth supporting, and this event is literally world-wide, but the local ride route was unneces-sarily complex, and city traffic was hard on our vintage bikes. We may want to organize our own route in the future. Our Winter Banquet speaker was, Fred Haefele, the author of Restoring the Indian. He read from his book and told us about some of the ef-forts to revive the Indian marque. If you haven’t read the book, you should. Fred is a great story teller, and you’ll find many of the trials in the book familiar. The ONE Show was a lot of fun, de-spite having to spend most of a day waiting in line to register a bike and have the mandatory pictures taken. Several members had bikes in the show, but we should arrange for a group display if we do it next February. For the first time in several years the weather for Corvallis was nearly perfect. The ride on Saturday before the Sunday show as one of the best attended rides we’ve ever had. We had a nice turnout of Indian motorcycles and the usual large groups of British and Asian (almost exclusively Japa-nese) motorcycles. Although the scooters that were shown were very nice, this class has not grown and it may be discontinued for lack of interest. I joined the ride to the Brooks Motorcycle and Car museum in June and that went well despite the 100 degree weather until I got nearly home. The BMW R90/6 stopped on me after extended stop and go on I-5. Our Southern Oregon Group is very active. I want to encourage our members in that part of Oregon to attend the meetings at Four Daughters Pub and to get on the email list that Gary Edwards maintains for SOG activities. All members should monitor the OVM web site for current rides and activities. The next event is the Dennis Frye Memorial Ride (Larch Moun-tain) on Saturday, August 5. The Oaks Park Picnic is Sunday, August 6. The Officers’ Meeting is October 21 at noon at Thomp-son Brew Pub, 3575 Liberty Road in South Salem. Our featured marque for next May is BMW. We are currently looking for a speaker on the theme of BMW motorcycles. We’ve had some ideas and asked one speaker, but the invitee hasn’t committed to speaking yet; so we are open to suggestions. Motorcycle Show and Shine in Veneta, August 20th The Kiwanis Club of Fern Ridge is a local service group that sup-ports the greater Fern Ridge area in several different ways. We sponsor the Veneta Easter Egg Hunt, The Thanksgiving Feast, and Holiday Food Boxes. These are just a few things that we do every year. We started the Motorcycle Show ‘n’ Shine 4 years ago as our main fundraiser. With the help of many local busi-ness’ and community members, we have grown this to be our “Signature Event”. This show is a non-judged show and is a People’s Choice vote for Best in Class which are Custom, Stock, Vintage and Trike. We also have a Best in Show. It is open to any motorcycles. This years event is on August 20th and Valhalla Winery (formerly Domaine Meriwether Winery) in Veneta. The show runs from 11am to 4pm. There will be food, music, raffles and as always 25% of our net profits are donated to Doern-bechers Childrens Hospital Cancer Research. Lorrie & Eric Nor-man are the owners of Valhalla Winery and will have their tasting room open as well. For information please contact Bonnie Nagle at 541.334-5835 or email [email protected]

STOLEN MOTORCYCLE TRAILER Shortly after the Corvallis Show my motorcycle trailer was stolen from in front of my house in Portland. This is the trailer I have used as the “Sag Wagon” for the Corvallis Ride. The trailer is a three rail motorcy-cle trailer with no deck. The brand is Yacht Club. There are two circular tie downs at the back which I added. Please call the Portland Police and report any information you may have about the trailer’s location. Speak to Officer P. Valdez at the East Precinct 503.823.4800, PPB case # 17-173479, then call me at 503.307.9085. Sam Justice
