Step 1. Scroll to find your team name or logo then click or tap “Step 2” to begin the registration process. If you’re new and don’t see your entry, there is a link available to send us an email and we will get you set up and notify you by reply email.

Step 2. Enter or update your organization and contact information on the form, then click or tap “Save, go to step 3” button

RECOMMENDED - Enter all email addresses from those in your group who would like to receive tournament email updates leading up to the event AND during the tournament.

Step 3. Enter Coaches’ contact information, team colors and rosters for each team you are registering. If you check the boxes but fail to complete the required fields, you will get a notification warning. Each line on your roster requires all fields to be filled in or you will get a notification warning. Correct name spelling is your responsibility as the rosters will be made available to the scouts, media and our ECScores.com website.

Returning teams will find last year’s roster automatically filled in, you can remove former players and add new ones. New teams will have a blank form to fill in.

NOTE: a blank or empty roster form may not have enough lines for your entire roster. Simply fill out the form, click the “Save, Step 4” button, then once on step 4, simply click the “Go Back to step 3” button and the roster form will present you with 5 new lines to fill in. Repeat as needed.

Step 4 Payments and other Checklist Items

REQUIRED - A copied page from your official 2018-19 game book from a game (no later than December 31st ) showing your entire roster that you are bringing to the tournament. After Jan 6th, no players can be added to your roster unless they are being pulled in from your younger teams. For example, If adding a MS player to your JV roster, you also need to submit a copied page from your MS game book as well. Quick Send: Lay out your scorebook showing a game from December 2018 Take a photo with your phone or table then email to [email protected]. Be sure to identify your team and age group AND make sure the date of the game is visible in your pic.

REQUIRED ASAP– Pay your non-refundable tournament deposit either on-line or by mail to hold

your spot.

ELIGIBILITY RULES

HSPN is delighted to see that the position we have held since 1993 is now being shared

by other organizations:

“Homeschooling” is defined to mean that a student’s education is parent-directed.

As such, the parents shall be involved in their child’s education by assuming the role of principal or headmaster, thereby (1) setting the date and requirements for high school graduation; (2) selecting and approving course materials and study schedules; and (3) selecting tutors, correspondence courses, videos, computer courses, and similar resources for their child’s education. Homeschooling would also include the person of legal responsibility of the student filling the role of a parent

As HSPN has stated for quite a while: “we have decided to stop trying to define what a

homeschool student is and is leaving that direction up to the parents in your group.” Our

focus is to support what we believe are acceptable homeschool-based sports teams

whose leaders (typically homeschool parents) are on a “mission” to create and maintain

a Christian environment for their students and particularly their own children.

Sometimes “blended is splendid”!

Since the early 1990s, HSPN has been right on the mark – ahead of trends- and reacting

to those trends by making necessary adjustments to help sustain and encourage

homeschool sports teams and make post-season tournaments a reality.

Basketball Teams that HSPN tournaments will permit:

1. A basketball team that is directed by homeschool parents and/or homeschool organization with the intent of serving homeschool students.

AND



2. A basketball TEAM roster that was put together in October/November and will be confirmed by the submission of a copy of a gamebook from a game in December.

Rosters are locked by Dec 31st.

AND

3. Student-athletes have not achieved high school graduation prior to August 1, 2018

AND 4. Student-athletes have not turned 19 before August 1, 2018. (We use August 1st

because just about every school team starts their Fall sports schedule in August nowadays, so it just makes sense)

AND

5. Student-athletes meets the age/grade requirements (see below).

These limited exemptions may be requested:

1. If this is you, YOU MUST CONTACT HSPN BY WITH COMPLETE ROSTER by

November 15t.

2. With a small roster, you might be able to add student(s) from another Christian school (not Public) that must be on your roster by Dec 31st as reflected on your

copied scorebook and approved by HSPN.

a. The added students did not play basketball for any school on any day during

the 2018-19 school year. HSPN will search the internet for verification.

AND

b. The composition of your team must still be a wide majority of homeschool students.

TOURNAMENT RULES AND FORMAT Tournament Divisions (as planned, may expand or be dropped)

o Boys Varsity Division (18-U) Pool 1 through Pool 8 o Girls Varsity Division (18-U) Pool 1 through Pool 6

o Boys JV Division (16-U): Pool 1 through Pool 4 o Girls JV Division (16-U): 8 teams MIN – Pool 1 and 2 (may be dropped)

o Boys MS Division (14-U): Pool 1 and Pool 2

o Girls MS Division (14-U): Pool 1 and Pool 2

Pool numbers are randomly assigned and ARE NOT SEEDINGS!

REQUIRED: Each team is to supply a scorer that will sit at the scorer’s table for each game. Home team will be listed first on the tournament schedule and is the “home book” All games are enforced by the Virginia High School League and sanctioned by

the National Federation of High Schools.

Player, Coach Spectator CONDUCT CLAUSE - Any player or coach for ANY REASON that receives TWO

Technical Fouls in one game -OR- is expelled from a game by the officials…CANNOT PLAY IN THE NEXT GAME. PERIOD! An expelled Spectator cannot attend the next game

Varsity Boys, Varsity Girls (18-U) Each team will compete in three Pool Play games. Then the brackets will be created (see pages 14-15 ) with 4 teams in each bracket. There will be quarter-finals for the top 8 varsity teams known as the Top Bracket) to seed for the semi-finals. All Varsity brackets will have semi-finals, Championship or 3rd place game for each bracket.

JV Boys (16-U) Each JV team will compete in three Pool Play games. Then the brackets will be created (see pages14-15) four teams in each bracket. All JV brackets will have semi-finals, Championship or 3rd place game for each bracket.

Middle School Boys, Girls (14-U) Each MS team will compete in three Pool Play games. Then the brackets will be created (see pages 14-15) with 4 teams in each bracket. All JV brackets will have semi-finals, Championship or 3rd place game for each bracket.

How we create "pools" – teams of 4 - for Round Robin

When grouping teams for pool play, for example, Varsity Boys teams, we use the following priorities: ➢ The first consideration is geography so that the likelihood of teams ever playing each other

during the regular season is very small. For example, we've had groupings in the past having teams from New York, Georgia, Texas, and Florida. This would almost ensure that these teams probably never played each other before. If there are more teams from one state than there are pools, then obviously there will be teams in the same pool that may have played each other during the season. ➢ The second consideration is team won-loss records vs Homeschool teams to balance

out the four-team pool so that it contains a fair and balanced mix of strong, medium and weak teams.

Note:

- a pool of all strong teams is a disadvantage - causing the better teams to play tougher competition and having their records blemished before the brackets are created.

- a pool of all weaker teams is also unfair because the pool play competition is weaker and

gives a deceptive won-loss record as the brackets are created With the balance of geography and balanced team records, we will try our best to establish random pools that are given a number only for purposes of organization. In other words, Pool #1, is not a ranking, just an identifier for the 4 teams that will be in it. WARNING: If you procrastinate and register late, you may not get in! Or to get your team in, we may expand – if there are 3 other teams- to make a pool. If this happens, your pool may be assigned an alternative schedule, where you might have to play a day earlier.

How Brackets Are Formed (after Pool Play)

NOTE: Point spreads after a round robin game are CAPPED at 21 points and is applied during Tie Breakers, see below. This means there is no advantage to run up the score after you preserve your 21 points, so let your bench players enjoy some playing time. After Pool play (after completing 3 games) 1. Each team accumulates team points based on its won-loss record. A team receives 3 pts for a win 2. Team points and tie-breakers will determine how teams are seeded and grouped into brackets. 3. A series of tie-breakers (see below) is used in cases where teams are tied in total team points at the completion of pool play

Tie-Breaker rules – applied when teams have the same Total Team Points (see #1 above).

1. Head-to-head - during tournament (how did the 2 teams do against each other if they previously played at the tournament). This is rarely applied since teams from other pools haven’t played each other but it is used sometimes for teams within the same pool end up with the same record (i.e. 2-1 or 1-2). 2. Cumulative Point Differential Points Scored MINUS Points Allowed during pool play. Capped at maximum 21 points per occurrence. For example, any game that results in a final score where the winning team wins by 21points or more, the point differential will be recorded as +21 (even if you won by 30). Likewise if you have lost by 30, for tie-breaking purposes that is recorded as -21 3. Least Average Points Allowed Per Game in Pool Play 4. “Strength of Pool” – for teams that are still tied for the same bracket seed, we will analyze the strength of each team’s pool to see if it can be determined which team had a pool of tougher competition over the other one. This is most critical when there are several 3-0 teams after pool play all vying for the highest bracket. 5. Coin toss - If the tie can’t be resolved, then a “best of 3” coin toss will take place.

BRACKETS FORMED… After the 3 pool-play games have been completed AND tie-breaker rules are applied (see above), teams are seeded from top to bottom. For example, in the boys’ varsity division of 32 teams, teams are seeded #1 through #32. Top 8 Seeds -- TOP Bracket (each team in this bracket is then seeded 1 through 8) is for Varsity Boys and Girls Divisions only Next 4 Seeds -> “6A” Bracket (each team in this bracket is then seeded 1 through 4) Next 4 Seeds -> “5A” Bracket (each team in this bracket is then seeded 1 through 4) Next 4 Seeds -> “4A” Bracket (each team in this bracket is then seeded 1 through 4) Next 4 Seeds -> “3A” Bracket (each team in this bracket is then seeded 1 through 4) Next 4 Seeds -> “2A” Bracket (each team in this bracket is then seeded 1 through 4) Last 4 Seeds -> “A” Bracket (each team in this bracket is then seeded 1 through 4) Other divisions: Varsity Girls: Top Bracket, then 4A down to A JV Boys, 4A down to A JV Girls, 2A down to A MS Boys 2A down to A MS Girls 2A and A.

Quarter-finals only for the Top Bracket: #1 vs. #8; #2 vs. #7; #3 vs. #6; #4 vs. #5 Advancing to Semi-finals in each bracket Seed #1 plays Seed #4 followed by Seed #2 playing Seed #3 in the semi-finals round. Advancing to Championship 1. Winners of both semi-final games, advance to the Championship round. Consolation Games 1. Losers of semi-final games will face off in the 3rd place Consolation game. 2. Winner of the Consolation Game takes home the 3rd place trophy. Overtime Games 1. A game will use overtime(s) to determine a winner if regulation ends in a tie. 2. Overtime games are governed by Virginia High School rules and officiated by the Colonial Basketball Association
