“Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, for you have answered his

call to serve.”

“Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, for you have answered his

call to serve.”

“Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, for you have answered his

call to serve.”

In April 2018 the Holy Father issued an Apostolic Exhortation ‘Rejoice and be Glad’. He focuses on the call to holiness that the average person - not only Saints - can also be called to embrace. In paragraph 76 of the Apostolic Exhortation His Holiness gets to the heart of what we do – stating “knowing how to mourn with others: that is holiness”.

Catholic Cemeterians are called to holiness through the service we provide families in our Lord’s name. To the families we help in their time of need, our cemeteries are a vital connection to the Church. Often, we are the first representative of the Church that people encounter after the loss of a loved one.

Our Catholic Cemeteries are Statements of Faith that tell the world that Catholics rejoice in the Lord always. Our kindness while performing the Corporal Work of Mercy of burying the dead needs to be known to all. People see our Cemeteries and know the Lord is near.

Our Catholic Cemeteries remind everyone who enters or drives by that there is always a reason to “rejoice and be glad”, even in our sorrow, because Jesus Christ has overcome death and eternal life awaits his family of believers.

Please join us at this year’s 70th Annual Catholic Cemetery Conference Convention and Exposition in Chicago, where together we will Rejoice and be Glad for the opportunity to advance God’s great kingdom through our cemetery ministries by expanding our knowledge, rejuvenating our spirit, and reaffirming our commitment to God’s call to us – his Catholic Cemeterians – to serve his people.

To ensure future organizational success, identifying and developing high potential people for leadership is essential. This interactive session will explore current leadership trends and how these can be met through a thoughtfully and strategically designed and implemented succession planning program.

10:45 am - 11:45 am General Session: 2nd Floor - Grand Ballroom “Cremation Sales: Presentation, Property Offerings and Closing” Mitch Rose, President of CANA

Consumers who choose cremation are the new normal. As this consumer choice has evolved, much of the industry advertising has made them price sensitive by statements like “lowest cost” and “affordable”. Once the family has chosen cremation, they are frugal, but not cheap, and in many cases, they don’t see the value in selecting cemetery property. Our industry has a new opportunity for design and presentation style.

Page 7: th ANNUAL - Catholic Cemetery Conference...6:30 am - 7:30 am Sunrise Walk/Lakefront Museum Campus Departing from the 8th St. Entrance Start your day off right with a sunrise walk along

This session will present key design strategies in a cremation garden, discovery questions and guiding statements for choosing permanent remembrance. By presenting the value proposition from the simplest, least expensive options upward to the high value, uniquely personalized options, an increase in both sales revenues and consumer satisfaction is achieved.

Without a clear and consistent view of the organization’s ultimate objective it becomes nearly impossible to effectively chart a path to get there. In this interactive session we will talk about defining success for the organization, the problems that arise from unclear or even dysfunctional definitions, and the ways in which a clear definition will affect day-to-day decisions.

Over the years Louisiana cemeteries have suffered dis-ruptions ranging from vaults slightly tilted in their graves to entire vaults and/or caskets displaced out of the graves. This is due primarily to above ground burial customs which have been common in Louisiana for many, many years. Although the responsibility for recovery is the individual cemetery, outside assistance is necessary as there are numerous logistical, legal and funding issues that must beaddressed. This presentation will examine several ceme-tery disasters that have occurred from 2005 to date.

TOURCCC CONVENTION

Chi-Town, the Windy City, the City of Big Shoulders, the City that Works. Whatever you call Chicago, it is a great city with genuine people, amazing sights, and incredible hospitality. That’s great, but can you see it all in a day tour? Well, no. But you can spend a day seeing some of the highlights that are near the Chicago Hilton, the hotel where the 2019 Convention and Exposition will take place.

The tour will leave the hotel by bus at 9:15 and travel to Navy Pier where we get on a boat to take an architectural tour of the down-town areas. You will learn about the history of the Chicago River and how it contributed to the development of Chicago. You will also learn about the diverse architecture of skyscrapers that line the river and get the latest on current developments. Definitely bring your camera for one of the most impressive pictures of the downtown skyline that you are likely to take during your visit. There is a pay bar on board that serves drinks, soft drinks, and snacks. It would be a good idea to bring a light jacket, a hat, and sunglasses. There are shaded areas on the boat, but they are lim-ited and can block your view of some of the buildings. The boat will drop us back at Navy Pier, a giant entertainment and dining complex built on a pier that extends into Lake Michigan. Here you can stop for lunch (on your own) at one of the many table service restaurants. They include the following:

• The Offshore Rooftop & Bar

• The Billy Goat Tavern

• Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

• Giordano’s

• Harry Caray’s Tavern

• Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville Bar & Grill

For those of you who want more of an adventure, you can grab a quick lunch at one of the counter service restaurants leaving you more time to explore. There is plenty of shopping inside, or go outside and walk along the outside of the south side of the pier. That’s where you will find Pier Park and the Centennial Wheel, a 200-foot tall-enclosed Ferris wheel that features panoramic views of downtown and the lake. If you walk the length of the pier to the east end, you get an idyllic view of the beauty of Lake Michigan. Don’t forget to check out the view back toward the city for a perfect opportunity for a selfie.

After Navy Pier, we will board the bus for a short ride to Millennium Park. We will take a walk through the park and see the major attractions: the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, the Cloud Gate (a.k.a the Bean), and Buckingham Fountain. We will walk past the Art Institute of Chicago, so you can see the iconic lions that flank the entrance, before we make our way back to the hotel. By the end of the tour, the area around the hotel will be a little more familiar, maybe enough for you to do some exploring on your own. Here are some attractions that you might consider checking out on Wednesday or Thursday of that week. All are a walk or short cab ride away.

• Willis Tower Sky Deck

• Adler Planetarium

• Field Museum of Natural History

• John G. Shedd Aquarium

• Buddy Guy’s Legends
