When the author says “every character in this play manipulates other people to get their needs met,” that’s a play I want to read. And after the first reading of Becky Shaw I knew it was a play I wanted to direct.

The manipulation author Gina Gionfriddo talks about is not always devious, or bitter, or even intentional. Don’t we all try to shape the world to our own ends day after day? Some of us do it purposefully, some unaware. But we all have needs and desires, and it’s the rare person who can subordinate what they want and give more than they take. And so we seduce, we demand, we wheedle, we bribe, we charm - we do our best to get through the day, and life, with some satisfaction. It’s that kind of hard, true kernel of human nature, explored by a brilliant author, that makes a great script.

Becky Shaw premiered at the Humana Festival in 2008 as a work commissioned by Actors Theatre of Louisville and ran off-Broadway at Second Stage Theatre in 2009. It was a finalist for the Pulitzer prize. I am thrilled to have an outstanding cast to bring it to life here. I think you will find it to be one of those plays that will give you much to think about, talk about - even argue about - for days to come.
