Even with this limited amount of time, I have committed to putting a 5 frame 80 page exhibit of the Perforated Officials of Canada together for CAPEX96, conducted my third Mail Bid sale, wrote a chapter on Air Mail perfins for the pending book "The Air Mails of Canada and Newfoundland" which has since been delayed and will not be issued in conjunction with CAPEX96 and have been working on my stamp business. This issue will probably reach you during CAPEX96. Although it was my intention to have this firstissue of 1996 to you several months ago, one thingjust led to another and before I knew it 5 monthshad past since the last Perforator.

The Durbano household has not been the same fora year now as my wife and I watch Matthew growand develop (he still doesn't collect stamps but I'mworking on it). This, plus the daily grind, leavesprecious little time for the other things in lifeA.K.A. stamps and perfins. Even with this limitedamount of time, I have committed to putting a 5frame 80 page exhibit of the Perforated Officials ofCanada together for CAPEX96, conducted mythird Mail Bid sale, wrote a chapter on Air Mailperfins for the pending book "The Air Mails ofCanada and Newfoundland" which has since beendelayed and will not be issued in conjunction withCAPEX96 and have been working on my stampbusiness.

However, since I have accepted the position ofEditor of our Study Group newsletter, The Perfo-rator, as well as having promised our Chairmanthat I would produce an issue soon, I am workinglate on a Friday night at the office doing just that.

May 31, 1996

This issue contains our usual Chairman's Chatter(albeit dated - I received it in February), a newpattern submitted by Barry Senior, an answer toSteve Koning's "Stump'd" article by ConradTremblay plus some additional articles that Conradwanted to get out of his file cabinet.

However, the majority of this newsletter is takenup by The Perfin Study Group Auction No. 12,another excellent production from ConradTremblay. In keeping with the Chairman's requestfor longer Auction Close dates, I have extendedthe Closing Date to July 19,1996 which is eightweeks from today - please send your bid in early.

I still have enough material for the next couple ofissues but am always looking for more so that Ican stay ahead of the game . Now that most of mynon-family issues have been taken care of, I willhave additional time to work on producing muchmore timely issues of the Perforator.

Have a great summer.

BNAPEX 95

I enjoyed attending the convention in Edmontonwhere I was able to renew acquaintances withStudy Group members who I had previously metand to also meet several to whom I had not previ-ously had the pleasure of speaking. It was great tosee Barry Clarke there all the way from NewZealand. Was able to get some good perfins fromtwo dealers who I knew casually yet who are notknown for having this type of material. Just goesto prove the old saying - seek and ye shall find.

Entered a 4 frame 64 page perfin display justrambling across the whole perfin spectrum. Thedisplay frames were quite a contrast to the onesused in Vancouver that only held 6 pages. Theframes used in Edmonton would appear to be thelatest and most up to date for philatelic use withultimate security but rather difficult to access whensetting up and taking down a display. They arehinged at the top and a special support rod has tobe used when open as the cover forms a canopyunder which you work. They seemed very newand I would say very expensive.

After the exhibits were judged, which was cer-tainly not rushed indicating careful considerationby the jury, I viewed each one, not only as adisplay but also from a statistical point of view. There were a total of 35 exhibits receiving thefollowing medals:

Gold 8Vermeil 10Silver 8Silver-Bronze 8Bronze 1

The displays were made up as follows:

Mostly Covers 23Mostly Stamps 10Half & Half 2

Only one stamp exhibit received a gold and thatwas revenues. There seems to be a swing awayfrom the display of stamps only to displays thatrequire covers.

At the critique, each display was dealt with by oneof the judges in the order in which they wereprinted in the show booklet. Possibly the conclud-ing remarks by the Jury Chairman summed it allup. The medals awarded at this show by this juryare by their considered judgement, however atanother show at another place by another jury, thesame displays might receive the same, a higher ora lower medal.

I noticed in the January-March 1996 edition ofBNAPortraitS that new guidelines for exhibitingand judging material have been approved, somaybe the judging in the future will be less of asubjective matter. I also feel that the more perfinsare displayed the more recognized our specializa-tion will become.

My awards. A BNAPS Vermeil medal and theAmerican Association of Philatelic Exhibitors goldpin Award of Honour for Creativity in PhilatelicExhibiting. If I ever get the 80 registered letterstamp perforated I1, the display might move up anotch.

FOLLOW UP

This is an update regarding the suggestions madeat our Study Group meeting in Edmonton.

• The revision has started to the currentedition of the Perfin handbook in prepara-tion for printing of the 5th Edition. Thiswill take time.

• I have asked Patrick to do whatever he canto expedite delivery of the Perforator, containing auctions, to far away places.

• Jon Johnson wrote to our President inregard to the suggestion for a joint meet-ing with the Perfins Club at BNAPEX96,and he has approved.

Page 3: Th BNA PERFORATOR · products for their retail and wholesale business. The size of the "D" is identical than Steve's and both are obviously a RECEIVED punch. The verso of the postcard

• Conrad Tremblay has sent me interestingcopies of 2 pages of a survey he started in1979 listing all perfins that have becomeknown to him, by type, by catalogue num-ber, and by position. This could be thebasis for the listing that I mentioned at ourannual meeting.

• The Guide to Perfin Exhibiting preparedby the Perfins Club has been circulated aswas suggested. See page 3 ofBNAPortraitS whole number 8. SteveKoning ordered a number of copies whichare available to members upon request.

BNAPEX96

Jon Johnson will be attending and he has agreed tochair the Perfin Seminar and Annual meeting andwill also set the date and time for same.

Not only that, he has offered to make a presenta-tion on perfins, the exact nature of which he hasyet to determine. As if all this wasn't enough, Jonwill contact the Perfins Club to ascertain whatarrangements can be made with them for a jointmeeting. Thanks Jon.

1996 Dues Notice

Our secretary sent me a note indicating that the1996 Perfins Study Group fees of $5.00 are nowdue and should be sent to:

Steve KoningRR 4Picton, ONKOK 2T0.

The following members have already paid up:

Benningen, Cabbage, Clarke, Dalpe, Deveau,Dicketts, Frazer, Gutzman, Hannay, Hyodo,Haslewood, James, Jamieson, Lee, Lingard,McNey, McDougall, Nesbitt, Poore, Senior,Schwerdt, Sprague, Stasewich, Taylor, Whiting,J.D. Wilson and R. Wilson.

New Pattern

Barry Senior recently sent me a photocopy of astamp that one of his U.S. trading partners had inhis "unidentified pile". The stamp is the 20 redadmiral (Scott #106) with the letters "EPC(o)".

According to the U. S. perfin catalogue it is fromthe Eagle Pencil Company of New York and islisted as Pattern E96. According to Barry it hasalready received the Canadian pattern E8. (Al-though Jon Johnson has not confirmed this).Barry also indicated that his U. S. trading partnerwanted it back (much to Barry's disappointment.)

Anyhow, a reproduction of the stamp is below aswell as a copy from the U. S. catalog illustratingthe E96 contact photo.

At first, I had the same reaction as Steve, but digging thru my revenues,

I found a couple examples of that square "D" punch.

The first one I found (illustrated above) the same type of his square "D"

preceded by a larger "P" - Could it be an abbreviation of a PAID punch or one

used by Parke Davies ...?

Then my research paid off - I found the return postcard illustrated above

issued by a plumbing and heating firm offering a free price list of their

products for their retail and wholesale business. The size of the "D" is

identical than Steve's and both are obviously a RECEIVED punch.

The verso of the postcard shows a Chateauguay, Quebec address, most likely the

home of that punch perforator. The punched date is April 29 1977 and the card

was returned to Lepine on May 4. Unfortunately, I never pushed my curiosity

further to find out what company owned that perforator, but eventually, I will

make an attempt to locate that company, with time and God helping!

WHAT ARE THEY?

In the December edition of the "Perforator", on page 11, I noticed (like manyother collectors) a "Snowflake"punch listed. It would greatly be appreciated ifthis punch could be reproduced in the Perforator for the benefit of all of us.

While going through my revenues in search of different punches, I pulled out ofthe dust stamps that did not see the light for at least 20 years and for someof them, I certainly would appreciate help to identify the company using thoseperforators.

1 2 3 4 5 6

The No. 1 seems to be a Kodak type - it looks like the figure 8 followed by5 dots often seen after a number. Any opinion?

The No. 2was used on a wide range of issues - both on revenues and on regular. Here is what I found:Four different war tax revenues (1^ value to 50e).One inland excise tax , a $1.00 value.Three excise tax, two leaf-type, from 2 to 1OV.One on 1937 George VI issue No. 233,and finally one on Ontario Law stamp (R68) a 2$ value.Could this law stamp unveal the home of that perforator?

The No. 3 and 4 are on excise revenue stamps.

The No. 5 - IB initials - are on the regular animal issues (1987-91): No. 1156,1158, 1172 and on the 40 and 42¢ coils

The No. 6 is on No. 233. It is the second such perforated stamp I see with tworows of well organized pin holes. Very intrigant.

Any information concerning these punches will be appreciated by all of us.Your help will make this field of collecting more interesting and challengingin a constant search of the unknown... I hope.

GREAT TRAVELLERS AND FREE-LOADERS

The stamps:

In 1941, these 5V stamps (Scott catalogue No. 257) were the second regularissue in use in Newfoundland until June 23, 1947 when a new 5¢ stamp was usedto commemorate the 450th anniversary when Jean Cabot named the island New-found-land.

The perf i n :

These three stamps were punched by the type C53, a perforator used by theCanadian Pacific Railway Company located in Vancouver, British Columbia.According to the authors of the Canadian Perfin Handbook, Johnson and Tomasson, the C53 perforator was in operation between 1911 and 1965.

The cancel:

These Newfoundland stamps were cancelled on Tuesday ( according to my universalcalendar) September 30, 1952 on a train following the route No . 11 from Hope toVancouver, B.C., Ludlow R . P.O. (Rural Post Office ) No. W57A with a rarityfactor of 220. This hammer was used on a CPR train between 1947 to 1953.

Rarity of this strip:

To this date, only one other strip of three is known. It is the NewfoundlandNo. 270 perforated by the style T13 (TRAY) as illustrated in the "Perforator"No. 59 - Volume 9, No. 4. With these stamps illustrated above cancelled in 1952,we now have the latest known cancel on a Newfoundland stamp used in Canada.

Their long trip:

The happy trio left the herd of caribous living on the Island and travelled onthe main land after their former country joined the other canadian provinceson April 1st, 1949. After that historical date, no other Newfoundland issue wasprinted. However, their postage stamps were still valid to be used anywherewithin Canada.

In conclusion:

This inseparable trio made a memorable trip: they travelled from the mostNorth-Easternlsland (Newfoundland) to the most South-Westernlsland (Vancouver).Diagonally, it is quite a distance for caribous to travel - freely - by boats,by train or on foot - real free-loaders! And that makes me wonder: where werethey hiding during that three-year period - 1949, when the last stamp wasprinted in Newfoundland and 1952 when they were used British Columbia? We maynever know!

BE ON THE LOOK OUT

G17 or G20 ???

by Conrad Tremblay

Last summer, I bought two collections of perfins from the Great-WestLife Assurance Co., the G17 and G20 designs, mainly for two different reasonsother than to add few new issues or positions to my collection:

- G20: I was looking for a large stampwith two complete punches - onedesign without the code hole (illustration 1). I had aside a small collectionof G1 7 with a Montreal cancel (illustration 2) instead of a Winnipeg cancelwhere the perforator was located. Furhtermore, they all had the same and onlypin missing in the "G" and without the code hole, of course, illustration No.3.

#1 ^'2

The illustration #1 is the Scott No. 155, the 10d from the regular1928-29 scroll series. The Montreal cancels could look like ill.#3, circularwith a duplex figure or number inside, or a large magenta cancel from the UnionBank branch located in Montreal. It could also be a Montreal roller or a sloganin french.

- G17: This perforator was located in Winnipeg, Manitoba and thedesigns of the 10-die perforator had no code hole. It was used between 1913 and1950 - years with the earliest and latest cancel.

4

Care must be taken for the proper identification of the G20 patternwith a missing code pin (ill.#3) and the patterns in the ill.#4, all G17, allwith a similar "G" with a pin hole missing , but with at least one extra holemissing in each letter of the design.
