President’s Message

Congratulations, Graduates!

Today, you enter the ranks of men and women who, for 170 years, have graduated from the City College of New York, and moved into the world to make it a better place. If you’ve had the chance, over your years here, to page through the honor role of those who came before you, you know what an elite and accomplished family you now join.

Those who came before you built cities, pursued justice at the very highest levels, led nations and industries to astounding new accomplishment. They taught, invented, built, discovered, organized and nurtured a society that is immensely better because they took hard earned knowledge and wisdom—the fruits of their time at CCNY—with them into the world.

As you move from our campus, I would like to urge upon you some final thoughts. First and most important: There has never been a more capable group of graduates than you. You came to us as young people who have come to us through the decades—neither more nor less prepared or worthy of this place, and you leave it as utterly befitting modern heirs of our legacy, and appropriate stewards of our vision. You do not yet know what you will accomplish, or to what challenges your life will lead you—but neither had any of those who came before you. We are proud of what you’ve been, and eagerly anticipate the discovery of what you will become. And we are grateful that, for a time, we shared our days together.

Second, understand that your college experience has been different than that of many who you will meet. The fact of our diversity is often presented as an important consideration for admission to the college. I have always thought that it was a far more important consideration for your entrance into the world. We have tried to create a community on this campus where nobody is an outlier—where respect of difference and the serious consideration of alternative perspectives is fundamental to how we think and work. To the extent that we’ve succeeded—and accomplishing these goals is never something about which to be complacent—we have modeled a better world than the one you may enter.

That means that you are freighted with special insights, that you have hopefully adopted more effective ways of seeing one another and appreciating what can happen when everyone’s contributions and experiences are acknowledged: when we account for the insights of each person, but also strive to understand and salve pain that may not be our own, that may be alien to our experience.

For you to live up to these expectations will take courage and fortitude. It will mean honoring the history of this great institution by bringing your best self into the world each day, and falling back, when you need it, on the lessons you have learned on our campus. It will mean drawing on the tremendous reserves of tenacity that so many of you have displayed in merely getting into CCNY, or coming to campus each day, or making it to this, your graduation day.

I give you this charge knowing how strong you can be, how smart you all are. I ask you to walk this path because I know you can, and for the sake of our society, I hope that you will. I ask you to do what generations of young people before you have done, every year, on this place and at this time. I ask you to move into the world as true sons and daughters of City College, and live lives that we will celebrate as reflecting our very highest values, our greatest expectations, and our fondest dreams.

With her unflinchingly courageous testimony before the 1991 Senate Judiciary

Committee’s televised hearings on the confirmation of Clarence Thomas for the Supreme Court of the United States, Anita Hill stepped from a highly accomplished private life into the very public, white-hot center of an intense national debate about how men and women relate to each other in the workplace. She may not have won the battle then, but 27 years later she and those who fought with her and those whom she inspired have turned the tide of the war.

The great granddaughter and granddaughter of slaves and the youngest of 13 children growing up on a farm in Oklahoma, Anita Hill received her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1980. She began her career in private practice in Washington, D.C. There she also worked at the U. S. Education Department and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In 1989, Professor Hill became the first African American to be tenured at the University of Oklahoma, College of Law, where she taught contracts and commercial law. Currently, at Brandeis University, she teaches courses on gender, race, social policy and legal history. As counsel to Cohen Milstein, she advises on class action workplace discrimination cases.

In 1995 Professor Hill co-edited Race, Gender and Power in America: The Legacy of the Hill-Thomas Hearings with Emma Coleman Jordan; in 1997 she published her autobiography, Speaking Truth to Power. Her latest book, Reimagining Equality: Stories of Gender, Race and Finding Home (Beacon Press, 2011), is an analysis of the housing market collapse of 2008 and its impact on gender and racial equality. Professor Hill adds this work to numerous other

publications on subjects ranging from bankruptcy to equal educational opportunity.

In addition, Professor Hill engages prominent professionals all over the country to spearhead “The Gender/Race Imperative,” a project to revive awareness of the broad capacity of Title IX, the crucial law mandating equal education opportunities for women. In collaboration with artist Mark Bradford for his 2017 Venice Biennale, Anita Hill explored contemporary art as a gateway to our understanding of the legal and policy challenges present in today’s civil and gender rights movements.

Professor Hill is the recipient of numerous awards, grants and honorary degrees. She chaired the Human Rights Law Committee of the International Bar Association, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Women’s Law Center and the Boston Area Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights. Last December, Professor Hill became the Chair of the Hollywood entertainment industry’s Commission to Eliminate Sexual Harassment and Advance Equality in the Workplace. In that role she will establish a best practices and policies framework for addressing workplace abuses and discrimination and creating more equitable work environments throughout the industry.

Anita Hill indeed speaks truth to power. At a time when sexual harassment was seen – if it was seen at all – as a private pain, her towering courage made us see that it is a matter of human and civil rights. Professor Hill is a civil rights leader of historic, national importance, and The City College of New York is fiercely proud to confer upon her the degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

Born into a Jewish immigrant family in Brooklyn in 1921, Harold Scheraga fell in love with physics and chemistry at City College. His passion led to a new understanding of one of the fundamental building blocks of life, the protein molecule, and laid the foundation for current efforts

to treat human diseases by specifically targeting damaged proteins.

After receiving his Bachelor’s of Science from CCNY in 1941 and his doctorate from Duke in 1946, Dr. Scheraga spent more than six decades at Cornell University. He combined experimental and theoretical approaches to produce a new understanding of molecular interactions within and between proteins, and was an exceptional mentor to young scientists in his labs and in his classroom.

When Dr. Scheraga began his career, our understanding of protein biophysics and biochemistry was in its infancy. There was not a single protein whose amino acid sequence was known, and elucidation of the three dimensional structure of proteins was still a decade away. He played a major role in explaining the physical principles underlying the behavior of proteins, laying the foundation for understanding forces responsible for protein structure and stability and mechanisms by which proteins fold into three-dimensional objects; these findings, in turn, enabled predictions of native structures of proteins.

Harold Scheraga tells us that City’s motto – “Look to the Past, Look to the Present, Look to the Future” – expresses how his family life and education led him to a career of such consequence. City College is honored to claim him as her son, and to award him the degree, Doctor of Science, honoris causa.

Seymour L. Moskowitz is the co-founder and retired president of Covant Management Inc., which acquires and manages companies that support federal government agencies in the areas of defense and national security.

During a career spanning the Cold War through 9/11, Mr.

Moskowitz focused on technological solutions that address critical issues in national security and counterintelligence, as well as the development of environmentally clean electric power generation systems. Following leading research positions at Curtiss-Wright and Vitro Corporations, he was part of a group that acquired Anteon International Corp., which provides mission-critical information and technology services to federal agencies, and which grew into Covant Technologies LLC and Covant Management.

Mr. Moskowitz holds seven patents and has

authored numerous technical and peer-reviewed papers on turbine and combustion technologies. He has served as a member of the International Council of Advisors of the National Geographic Society, and as Endowment Trustee of the United Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, and the boards of several companies.

Winner of the Townsend Harris Medal and a true son of City College, Mr. Moskowitz is dedicated to giving current students the opportunities he had at CCNY. In addition to donating a gas turbine engine to the mechanical engineering lab at CCNY, he has endowed the Seymour and Pearl Moskowitz Biomedical Engineering Doctoral Fellowship, and, for undergraduate students, the Seymour and Pearl Moskowitz Biomedical Scholarship and the Dave and Clara Moskowitz Memorial Mechanical Engineering Scholarship, earning him a place on the Grove School of Engineering Wall of Honor. The City College of New York is proud to honor him today with the degree, Doctor of Science, honoris causa.

ValedictorianYasmine El Gheur2018 Valedictorian

A first generation American from Park Slope, Brooklyn, Yasmine El Gheur is graduating from the Division of Humanities and the Arts with a BA in art history and a 3.94 GPA. She received the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship, which is awarded to talented students from

traditionally underrepresented groups to encourage them to pursue doctorates in the humanities and social sciences. She plans to earn a Ph.D. and become an art historian of contemporary North African and Middle Eastern Art.

Among El Gheur’s other honors, the Downer Award for Study Abroad took her to Paris in summer 2016 to study at the Sorbonne. The next summer, she was in Rabat learning Moroccan Arabic. In addition, El Gheur was a City College Fellowship recipient, winner of the Therese Ralston Connor Award for Art History, and a CCNY Kaye Scholar.

She interned at the Jewish Museum and The Frick Collection (an art museum), both in New York City, and participated in the CCNY-Stanford exchange program. It was at Stanford, in summer 2015, that El Gheur began her research on contemporary Moroccan photographers that would be a component of her Mellon Mays research project.

From a melting pot New York family with a Moroccan immigrant father and Colombian/Cuban/Irish-American mother, El Gheur’s academic success and the opportunities available at CCNY inspired her mother to return to college. Kathryn is now a senior at CCNY majoring in international studies and studio art. Yasmine’s father, meanwhile, has been a big motivator in his daughter’s academic journey. “He never had the opportunity to consider college for himself, but has been a constant source of encouragement, pushing the importance of a college degree,” says Yasmine.

Zhiying Zhu2018 Salutatorian

Zhiying Zhu, an immigrant from China, is the Class of 2018 Salutatorian. The Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, resident completed her requirements for a BE in biomedical engineering from the Grove School of Engineering with a 3.91 GPA. It’s a crowning

achievement after overcoming adversity.

Poverty forced Zhu to work odd jobs from the age of 13 after arriving in New York with her mother and a young sister. She worked two or more part-time jobs while completing the rigorous engineering curriculum. Challenging as it was, it did not diminish the passion for research and healthcare that she had developed.

Zhu gained both research and bedside care experiences at several institutions, including CCNY, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, the University of Texas at Austin and the National Cancer Institute. She said the technical skills she acquired from these experiences prepared her for a more engineering role in medicine.

A month after commencement, Zhu will sit for her MCAT with the goal of pursuing an MD/PHD and a double career as a medical doctor and researcher. Her dream is to bridge the gap between bench-side research and bedside care.

Zhu’s accolades at CCNY include a NASA New York Space Grant Fellowship, the Harold Shames Award for Undergraduate Excellence, a Colin Powell Fellowship in Leadership and Public Service, and the Jewish Foundation for Education of Women Scholarship.

She’s been a Student Support Services Program student since her freshman year and received the Charlotte and Arthur Zitrin Scholarship awarded to a select group of SSSP students.

Commencement originated in the Middle Ages as the ceremony at which university graduates were initiated into the teaching profession. The City College’s first Commencement took place in 1853 at Biblo’s Saloon, a large beer garden on Broadway near Houston Street, when seventeen young men graduated from the Free Academy, as the College was then known. In seven of the years between then and now, the College celebrated a winter and a spring graduation; today’s ceremony is the College’s 172nd Commencement.

The Academic Costumes vary mostly by the colorful hoods. The gowns of most universities in this country are black, however Yale, Harvard and many foreign universities have brilliantly colored gowns. The shortest hood is the bachelor’s; the longest and broadest is the doctor’s; and the master’s is midway between these in size. The hoods, worn over the shoulders and down the backs of the faculty, indicate the degrees and the institutions of the wearers. The lining of the hood, in silk, gives the color or colors of the institution granting the degree. The color of the velvet binding or edging designates the subject of the degree earned.

The Academic Procession is rooted in pageantry from the early, medieval universities. These schools were usually in the charge of the clergy, and the order of march followed the tradition of religious processions: younger and newer groups preceded the older, with the highest ranking participants

at the end. In today’s ceremony the degree candidates will march first, led by the deans of their respective schools or programs. Alumni celebrating their various class reunions will march next; this year we welcome members of the Classes of 1978, 1968, 1958 and 1948, followed by the faculty. The final marchers will be members of the platform party, including deans, officers of the College, university representatives, the President’s Medal and honorary degree recipients, various dignitaries, the Provost and the President.

The Chief Marshal precedes the President and carries the mace. Though now purely ceremonial, the tradition of the mace bearer dates back to medieval England, when an official taking office or opening courts needed a bodyguard. In those times the mace, or spiked club, was a formidable weapon that was held ready to protect the official.

The Mace of The City College, designed and built by Bernard Bernstein of the department of industrial education, incorporates in its design various symbols associated with the College. The beaver forms the finial of the mace; the six flanges, transformed from the spikes of a medieval hand weapon, echo the wrought iron and masonry arches spanning Convent Avenue; below the flanges, the circular designs symbolize the schools of the College; the three medals at the base repeat the seal of the College. The mace is composed in such a way that many of the 144 originally separate parts can be removed and then restored or replaced without involving most of the other parts. The principal materials of the mace include a walnut shaft with sterling silver mounts and gold-plated emblems.

The President’s Gavel is carried by the Provost, who is the chief academic officer of the College. It was given to the College in 1958 in honor of the founder of The City College of New York, Townsend Harris, by his grand nephew, Richard H. Rush. Designed by Professor Simon Lissim of the department of art, the ceremonial gavel is made of gold and silver and has ends of Brazilian rosewood. A ribbon engraved with the names of the College’s presidents encircles the handle. The names of the schools of the College are engraved on the hammer; the college seal is set into the two sides of the handle.

This year The City College of New York celebrates the 171st anniversary of its founding. The need for an institution like The City College was recognized as early as 1847, when the State Legislature authorized a local referendum to determine whether a public college should be established in the City of New York; at the time, the city had a population of a half-million people and two private colleges, which had high tuition and only 247 pupils. The vote was overwhelmingly in favor of the proposition, and the Free Academy was established in a new building at Lexington Avenue and 23rd Street. The doors to its first entering class opened in January, 1849, and a class of seventeen young men graduated in 1853; with friends and family members, that first commencement was too large for the chapel at the Free Academy, so it was celebrated in Biblo’s beer garden.

In 1866 the name of the Free Academy was changed by legislative act to The College of the City of New York. Since then, it has been called CCNY — an unofficial designation the College retained even after its name was again changed in 1929 to The City College. Students, alumni and friends call the College, simply, “City.” The college colors, lavender and black, were chosen by the student body in 1866. The beaver, symbol of intelligence, industry and determination, was voted to be the College’s official athletics’ mascot by a student-wide poll in 1934.

The governing body of the College, originally the Board of Education, was replaced in 1900 by a separate Board of Trustees appointed by the Mayor. In 1926, the Board of Higher Education was established to govern both City and Hunter College (founded in 1870), and subsequently the entire City University system, established in 1961. After primary

responsibility for funding the University became that of New York State rather than New York City, an enlarged Board of Trustees, appointed by the Governor and the Mayor, assumed control in 1980.

The City College of New York, originally limited to undergraduate programs in classical and practical courses of study, has continually enlarged both the breadth and the depth of its offerings. Today it offers more than sixty undergraduate programs and majors and more than forty graduate programs, including PhD programs in six disciplines.

The City College moved to its present location in 1907, and now occupies a thirty-five acre Neo-Gothic and modern campus on historic St. Nicholas Heights. It is really a small university, with a College of Liberal Arts and Science and four professional schools — the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, the Grove School of Engineering, School of Education, and the CUNY School of Medicine (formerly the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education).

The City College is the nation’s flagship institution of public higher education, predating the midwestern state and land-grant colleges by two decades. It is the number 2 college in the nation with the greatest success of ensuring the social mobility of our students. For more than 169 years it has been a primary avenue of advancement for generations of New Yorkers who might not have had the chance to attend college. Today it continues to fulfill the aim of its founder, Townsend Harris, who said: “Open the doors to all — Let the children of the rich and the poor take their seats together and know of no distinction save that of industry, good conduct and intellect.”
