A School’s Role in Creating a
Better Society
Students spend 13 years of their lives
in a school environment and, although
their core values come from their
families, it would be naïve to say that
schools don’t also have a place in
challenging students to be open-
minded, tolerant and kind as
members of the diversified society in
which we live. There are two
important events that take place in
March which encapsulate this thinking
about how the school works to create
a better future for all of its students:
1. International Women’s Day –
March 8th
The 2016 theme is to progress gender
parity; that is, to get rid of the glass
ceiling, to have equality in career
opportunities and pay, and to have
equal respect for the role of women in
our society. The IWD website asks
that
“Everyone - men and women -
can pledge to take a concrete
step to help achieve gender
parity more quickly - whether to
help women and girls achieve
their ambitions, call for gender-
balanced leadership, respect
and value difference, develop
more inclusive and flexible
cultures or root out workplace
bias. Each of us can be a leader
within our own spheres of
influence and commit to take
pragmatic action to accelerate
gender parity.”
At Kariong Mountains High School, we
pledge to provide the opportunities,
support and structure to ensure that
there is gender parity. We are also
working to improve our future focus, so
that girls are exposed to and can
aspire to those careers that will bring
down the glass ceiling and/or which
have been traditionally associated with
males. This will be particularly
important, as the careers requiring
competence in the STEM subjects gain
more prominence in 21st century
society.
2. National Day of Action
against Bullying and
Violence - March 18th
The website describes the event
as: “This annual day is Australia's
key anti-bullying event for schools,
and encourages all students to 'take
a stand together' against bullying
and violence in schools, the
classroom and beyond.”
This year, we plan to have some
specific activities with students to
reinforce that our school does not
tolerate bullying behaviour, be this
physical, verbal or via social media.
It is never OK to be violent or
advocate its use as a problem
solving strategy. This is a belief that
must be firmly adopted at home and
at school if it is to take root and
grow. Our anti-bullying message will
be supported via the Brainstorm
shows for students in Stages 4 and
5, taking place in March. Thank you
to the P&C for subsidising these
events.
Our anti-bullying plan is up for
review in 2016, so I hope that
we can once again have
representation from students,
staff and parents to develop a
plan that is effective in
sustaining this “bullying, no
way” environment.
Some parents may have
children whose friendship
groups have fallen out, creating
conflict amongst the group and
sometimes spreading to other
students connected with the
members of the group in some
way. Although, unfortunately,
this can turn into a bullying
situation, in the first instance, it
is usually two students upset
with each other and prone to
flinging hurtful comments at
each other. We have a
Supervisor of Girls and a
Supervisor of Boys who can
assist in this situation, by co-
ordinating a structured
mediation that focuses on
having respectful behaviour as
the outcome. If your child is in
a conflict situation, please ring
the school as early as possible
to avoid escalation and to
assist them in moving beyond
this conflict with confidence.

Brainstorm Productions are coming
to KMHS on Monday 14th March for
Years 7 – 10. The students will be
watching a performance called
Verbal Combat. Verbal Combat is a
performance that discusses the
issues surrounding cyberbullying,
bystanders, social media and
exclusion. We believe that this will be
a great opportunity for students to
discuss and see the effects of
cyberbullying on others as well as
discuss cyber safety. The
performance is $2 a student, which
will be collected at the door on the
day.
