Where are they now? Old Scholar Sam Capurso Sam graduated from SHC in 2008, he was co-captain of Camara House, achieved an ATAR of 99.1 and received a merit for Legal Studies; obviously he was a very successful student and a great contributor to the SHC community.

What did you do after leaving school? I started a double degree in Law and Economics at Adelaide Uni but quickly decided that the law was not necessarily for me. I then changed to a degree in Economics, which I really enjoyed because of its relevance and broad range of choice. Half of the degree is comprised of compulsory subjects and the other half is electives; this also meant that I was able to claim credit for a number of my law subjects when changing degrees. Throughout my electives I was able to pick up subjects in

statistics as I also really enjoyed Maths and was able to employ this knowledge in the data analysis used in Economics. What did you do after completing your degree? When I finished my degree I did 6 months work with KPMG in data analysis but found that this was a very desk bound job that lacked extended opportunities to interact with other people. Prior to starting this sort of work I was faced with the difficult choice between work in data analysis and returning to study to do a Graduate Dip in teaching (which I found was an ongoing interest and passion.) What drew you back to teaching? During that 6 months of work I was still tutoring students in Maths (it was my 4th year of tutoring secondary students) which kept me interested in the teaching side of things. This made me think about making teaching my future career. My “AHA” moment occurred when an opportunity came up to be a tutor at the Adelaide Uni that I heard about from friends who were studying Honours. (I had been offered Honours but felt that I needed a change from that line of study and the associated university life.) Whilst completing 6 months as a tutor at the University I also got my Cert 1V in Training and Assessment which I studied externally through TAFE. When I finished the contract at the Uni I decided to go back and make teaching my future career. What are you doing within your Graduate Diploma? This year completing the Grad Dip through Adelaide Uni is essentially teaching me how to teach. There is a large number of students with a variety of academic backgrounds, we do group together in common professional areas for some activities and tasks. It is an enjoyable year, with quite a considerable work load but the upside is that you do get it done in one year. I do 2 teaching pracs for the year both 5 weeks in length. My placement at SHCS is my first one and the other is highly recommended to be a country placement so later this year I am off to sunny Port Pirie to St Marks. What words of advice would you offer students? Follow your passion and keep your options open. To help you do this make sure that you do your research in terms of what the different unis and tafes offer; it’s got to be right for you! What do you hope to achieve as a teacher? As a teacher I hope that I will be able to inspire students to work towards their goals and have the confidence and self-belief that attainment of them is completely within their reach.

Tonsley TAFE I recently had the opportunity to visit the newly opened Tonsley TAFE situated on the old Mitsubishi site. This site is being redeveloped as an educational hub with TAFE and Flinders University offering students state of the art learning facilities along with some industry based commercial developments. This attachment allows you to view a photographic look at the new TAFE and some of their very impressive facilities. It is an exciting and new precinct within a few kilometres of many of you.......... https://docs.google.com/a/shcs.sa.edu.au/presentation/d/1ldcmeWrlX-LzcsbnrhwAMzmTHjvnz8xwbdurE7XcSaQ/edit?usp=sharing

Work Experience Tom Vanehouse spent four days on work experience with the Department of Defence. During his time with the Department he visited and received presentations from a number of units/areas including security police, military working dogs, joint logistics unit, engine build-up, aircraft life support sections, aircraft maintenance, aviation medicine, aeronautical engineering, air traffic control, flying squadrons, fire and rescue, catering and defence force recruiting just to name a few.

Describe the place where you worked and the actual work place “I did work experience at RAAF Edinburgh. I worked in nearly all of the areas on base and took part in a P.T. session.”

What was the highlight of your time during work experience? “Pilots speaking with me. Seeing C-17 and FA-18 aircraft and a tour of P3-Orion. Seeing how many jobs are available in the RAAF.”

BEFORE CONSIDERING WORK EXPERIENCE PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING: It is a legal requirement that prior to commencing work experience students are inducted in the following areas: Occupational Health and Safety, Equal Opportunity and the Children’s Protection Act 1993. Adequate time (approximately 3-4 hours) should be allocated to cover these topics effectively and students need to demonstrate their understanding.

In addition to this, the work experience form must be signed by the student, parent/guardian, work experience supervisor (all arranged by the student) and finally the principal (arranged by the school). The original (copies or faxes are unacceptable) work experience agreement form then becomes a legal contract which sets the school insurance cover in place and must be retained by the school for a number of years.

The school must also provide a contact person who is responsible for each student for the duration of their placement.

Work experience is a very valuable experience for most students however; it does take time to ensure that the above expectations are met. We are happy to accommodate students in the times allocated, please do not cause yourself or the school embarrassment by making other arrangements and then asking for exceptions to be made. Students who wish to do work experience during 2014 are advised that the dates are:

7th – 11th July Deadline for paperwork 10th June

29th September – 3rd October Deadline for paperwork 1st September

1st – 5th December Deadline for paperwork 3rd November

Work or job trials are not sanctioned by SA work experience guidelines.

Job Guide 2014 The Job Guide provides an in-depth look at a range of occupations, and their education and training pathways. Copies are available outside the careers office.

What does that mean?

Major? What is it?

Generally speaking a degree is made up of core subjects, plus elective subjects (sometimes called specialisations). These specialisations are referred to as a major.

For example you may graduate with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Maths.

Minor? What is it?

The secondary area of studies at university within a degree program. It will be covered in less depth than your major.

During the Semester and April school holidays, many of our students completed Structured Workplace Learning. On the job

learning is a very important component of the student’s training. Not only do they learn technical skills, they also develop a

range of other more generic skills that many employers say are vital to employability.

We ask that students and host supervisors complete a log book to appraise the student’s achievements in seven generic skill areas:

1: Communication 2: Team work 3: Using technology 4: Citizenship 5: Initiative and enterprise (including problem solving) 6: Planning and organising (including self-management) 7: Personal development (including learning)

Please take the time to read some very positive comments from Host Supervisors and students.

“Your student was more than I expected from a “work experience” lad. He was punctual, keen to learn and often had good

relevant questions and opinions on what we were doing. He was willing to try his hand at any task that was given or offered to

him. I believe he has already developed a good work ethic that can only result in him securing employment in the near future.

We wish him all the best in what lies ahead”.

“I found that over my five days of work placement, I succeeded to complete what was asked of me to an appropriate standard.

My strengths were cooperating with colleagues and customers and from this experience I can recognise my areas of

improvement. I believe this work placement has exposed me to new ideas of which career path I may decide to take.”

“It was a pleasure to host your student this week. She has a very friendly manner – this was present with her interactions with the

educators and children. Your student has shown a level of maturity and responsibility that is required when working with

children. Your student is a confident young lady who shows good leadership skills.”

“This work placement has really contributed to my training. I asked questions all the time so I can learn as much as possible. My

main strengths are my neatness and work ethic. I always tried hard to work efficiently. I would like to develop my skills all round.

I believe there is always room for improvement.”

“Your student has performed very capably in all areas. He responds well to direction and goes about his work with a keen and

positive attitude. He is a good worker and team player. I look forward to working with him again.”

“This work placement supports my future because it has given me a lot of confidence and taught me skills I didn’t know before I

entered the VET Program. My strengths are listening, lifting heavy equipment and materials and helping around the workshop. I

showed respect and consideration to my colleagues and customers and took responsibility to get jobs done, even without being

asked.”

If you are interested in hosting our students and/or would like to know more about our VET Program, we would like to hear from you! Please contact our VET Coordinator, Tony Finamore and VET Administrator, Annemarie O’Grady on 8350 2570 or email: [email protected]
