15th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C)

14th July, 2019

Reflection..... Jesus is acknowledged as “rabbi” by his followers even though he

did not attend any rabbinical school. A lawyer who is learned in the law addresses Jesus as

“rabbi”, not out of belief or admiration for Jesus but in order to test him. Jesus who can read

the hearts of people obliges to the lawyer’s question, not to engage him in a dual of wits, but

to take this occasion as an opportunity to teach.

The lawyer’s question is one of the deep questions about life, as to how one can inherit

eternal life. Jesus does not spoon-feed the lawyer with the answer but challenges him to

draw an answer based on his knowledge of the law. The lawyer gives a perfect answer by

quoting from Deuteronomy about loving god and from Leviticus about loving one’s neighbour

as oneself. “Do this, and you will live”, Jesus tells the lawyer. Jesus does not tell the lawyer

that he is already saved simply because he could quote the Scriptures. Knowledge and acting

on that knowledge are two different things. Jesus then tells a parable to illustrate the

importance of concrete action.

The protagonist in the parable is a Samaritan; he is a religious and social outcast to the Jews

since Samaritans are considered a half-breed race, impure and heretics. The other characters

in the parable, a priest and a Levite, are considered the respectable members of society.

Sadly, however, both the priest and the Levite fail to help the person lying on the road.

Perhaps they thought that the man lying on the road has already died, or will soon die, and

touching him will render them unclean for an entire week and therefore unfit to perform the

temple service.

Jesus raised the very pertinent question to the lawyer: “Which of these three, do you think,

proved neighbour to the man who fell among the robbers?” With some difficulty, the lawyer

has to admit that it was the Samaritan who was a neighbour to the victim on the road. Jesus

then tells the lawyer, and us, to go and do the same.

To quell the rumours regarding the collection – all of our collection money stays in Goondiwindi, this is one of our main sources of income.

Thank you to all those who money counted in the past, alternate arrangements HAD to be made. This is not a reflection on our money counters. Thank you to all those who have handed in their keys, those who still have them, can you please hand them in ASAP.

Introduction

Figuring out how to live in faith can sometimes create

a confusion of copious rules, regulations, practices and

prohibitions. The reality, however, is a rather simple

“heart and soul” thing. Loving and responding to God

cannot happen apart from loving one’s neighbor with

deep compassion. Today’s Gospel reminds us that the

neighbor might not be the one we would choose to

love. The good Samaritan story is a cautionary tale that

catches our attention for good reason.

First Reading Deuteronomy 30:10-14

Let the instruction of the Lord God be near you.

Responsorial Psalm

Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live.

Second Reading St Paul to the Colossians 1:15-20

All things were created through him and for him.

ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! Your words, Lord, are spirit and life;

you have the words of everlasting life.

ALLELUIA!

Gospel Luke 10:25-37

Who is my neighbour?

Prayers of the Faithful

For each other, that we will have the courage to recognise who our neighbour is, and with deep

charity come to their aid when in need. Let us pray to the Lord.

Grant this, almighty God. For farmers in Queensland, and in the nations of

East Africa who are experiencing drought, that there will be good rains for their crops.

Let us pray to the Lord. Grant this, almighty God.

May we honour this land of ours, sacred to

the first custodians, and now sacred to us all, for it is part of God’s creation.

Let us pray to the Lord

May we cease to do evil, learn to do good, search for justice and help the oppressed.

Let us pray to the Lord .

May we learn that God’s grace is powerfully active in the most simple acts of kindness,

even by offering a glass of water to one in

need. Let us pray to the Lord

Let us pray together...... Father, your Law,

given to us through Jesus,

directs us to a universal love.

It is as rich than gold, and

sweeter than honey.

Bless us now. Through Christ

our Lord.
