Thorsby was ever able to rescue me from my challenges with math.

I also recall Mrs. Chranowski. If my memory serves me correctly, I had her in grade six. She was a very, very thorough editor when it came to writing essays. I remember being fascinated at how one piece of paper could have so many red corrections on it. Thank you to Mrs. Chranowski for pushing us to do our best.

In high school, I recall Mr. Elson nurturing a love of world events during our Social Studies classes. I think this had a great impact on my outlook towards the world. I loved listening to the conversations in our community, with Ukrainian and Polish language and cultural influences often showing through. I remember learning Ukrainian dancing in school and going to socials (community hall dances) where we all had a good work out dancing pol-kas and other eastern European dances. Honestly, I had a lot more fun there than at any of the high school danc-es, probably because I actually got to dance.

After graduating from Thorsby high school in 1974, I moved to Edmonton and attended the University of Al-berta diploma nursing program. During those 30 months, I lived in the University hospital’s nurses residence. It was time of hard work, long hours, and lots of laughter. The friends I lived with and studied with while there con-tinue to be dear to me to this day.

In 1977, after writing my RN exams, I began work at the U of A hospital on a cardiac and thoracic surgical floor. I remained there for about 2 1/2 years, upon which time I made my first trip to Europe with two other nursing friends. We went on a camping tour, and backpacked through a lot of Europe. It was at this time that I began thinking about the bigger world in terms of travel and learning.

I went on to nurse for a time at the Misericordia, and later the U of A, in the area of pediatrics.

In 1981, I traveled to Australia and New Zealand for al-most a year. My plan was to work in Australia but after several months, I traveled to New Zealand, explored both islands, and ended up deciding to stay in Auckland with friends. During this 6-month period, I managed to get a temporary work permit and was employed as an aide at a private hospital. I made a lot of good friends while in New Zealand and I have traveled back there three times since.

Upon returning to Alberta, I decided that I wanted to ex-plore my own country (although I had already traveled to Eastern Canada twice with my family), so I moved to

Straight Out of ThorsbyFrom the County of Leduc, from Alberta and Canada, from Singapore to the U.K., from Aus-tralia to Holland, from the USA to Panama, Thorsby graduates are making a difference. This is the 44th installment in a series of pro-files which indicate what a small school and community can produce. The people who conduct the interviews are Audrey Brosseau and John Elson. HEATHER (MACKENZIE) GRABOWSKICLASS OF ‘74

I was born in the University of Alberta Hospital in 1956. My parents, Arnold and Doreen MacKenzie, were living in Thorsby at this time, having moved to the village after they married in 1954. I spent my entire childhood in Thorsby, leaving in 1974 to pursue further education in Edmonton.

I distinctly remember while growing up that Thorsby was a vibrant community. There was always a lot of events, clubs, curling, church activity and opportunities to meet people. The main street of Thorsby, as I recall, was always busy, including Saturday evenings!!! There was not nearly as much travel to the “big city” of Edmon-ton. I have a special memory of my dad taking me to the Thorsby theater. I think the movie was Old Yeller. My early memories of Thorsby include going to the cheese factory for fresh cheese and cheese curds. The train went through Thorsby during the time I lived there and I still find myself wanting to stop and check for trains when I cross the tracks.

As I entered the school system in Thorsby, there were still three elementary school buildings in the area that now is the Esso station, restaurant and seniors center. I remember the teachers thoughtfully trying to figure out the source of my struggles, by having my hearing checked and pursuing other possibilities. In the end, I think I was just shy. I recall in grade 3 having Mrs. Ke-aschuk for a teacher. One day she told the class, “Look at Heather. She couldn’t spell her way out of a paper bag (which was true!) and now look at how well she is doing “. I thank Mrs Keaschuk for helping me overcome that learning challenge. I truly was a fairly good spell-er after that. Funny thing is, I have no recall as to how she taught me those skills. Unfortunately no teacher in

Vancouver. I was amazed to find out that this city had an ocean and a ski slope in its backyard! I also found out that when you go cross country skiing on the coast, there are hills that felt like mountains to me!! I found em-ployment at UBC hospital, where I worked on a neuro-logical ward. It was in Vancouver that I met my husband Ralph and started a family.

My husband Ralph is the son of German immigrants and so I found myself once again entering a world of new traditions. Ralph’s extended family all live in Germany, so we have over the years traveled to that country often. Besides becoming a member of Ralph’s German family, I was given the opportunity to live in German homes and immerse myself in their lives. I am thankful for that op-portunity to be enriched and grow.

When I married Ralph, he was a civil engineer. Shortly before we married in 1984, he was laid off due to the downturn in the economy. I was working as an RN, but shortly after our wedding I quit nursing for medical rea-sons. So... Ralph pursued other possibilities, and even-tually became a self-employed technical writer, special-izing in computer-aided design (CAD, for short). Having entered the CAD industry early in its development, he has been able to watch and document its growth and changes. I tell you this, because it is Ralph’s interna-tional work that provided us with many opportunities to travel and see the world. While I have not always ac-companied Ralph in his travels, I believe I have visited 27 countries at last count. Once again, my interest in world events and cultures has been nurtured.

In 1991, Ralph and I moved with our children to Abbots-ford, BC. We remain in Abbotsford and love the area with all its amazing mountain views, hiking, and rural presence nearby. It has been a great area to raise our family.

I was fortunate to have been able to stay at home while raising my children. During this time, I was very active in the volunteer sector and church activities. I am very thankful to have had these opportunities.

Ralph and I have a son and two daughters. Our son Ste-fan is married to a lovely young woman who immigrated to Canada from Paraguay. They have two daughters and these two granddaughters are learning both Eng-lish and Spanish, because of their mother’s heritage. Stefan works at a Christian college here in Abbotsford. Our eldest daughter Heidi has a Bachelor of Education degree, and married a young German fellow. She now lives in Germany. Heidi is fluent in German and gives us another reason to visit Germany as often as possible. Our youngest daughter Katrina actually married a Cana-

dian! Katrina is completing a Masters degree in Fine Arts and is a professional photographer.

Besides my travels to various parts of the world, I now have another opportunity to meet and learn from other nationalities. I presently teach ESL (English as a Second Language) once a week. I meet individuals from around the world and once again, I am thankful for all they have taught me and the friendships that we have made.

And so, that curiosity and appreciation of the world that Mr Elson and the people of Thorsby planted in me has grown to include many opportunities.

I still speak to my mother in Thorsby most days and en-joy the daily updates. My regular trips to Thorsby are al-ways highlighted by visits with familiar faces and smiles. Thank you Thorsby for the memories and friendships!

Historical Fact by edt. Laurie Gellert:Heather Grabowski’s father, Arnold MacKenzie, par-ticipated in the Normandy invasion of June, 1944. As the Canadian troops moved inland from Juno Beach, Arnold’s task, as a member of the Canadian Signals Corps, was to string communication lines from the front to the command posts in the rear. The Canadians moved into the ruined city of Caen and on across France and into Belgium and Holland. Once in Holland many of the Canadian soldiers befriended Dutch youngsters who had suffered during the occupation of their country. Arnold was no exception and befriended a boy from the Appeldoorn area. The two kept in touch for many years and Arnold was visited by his now “old” youngster many decades later in Thorsby. Arnold had many interesting stories to tell, e.g. hearing Dwight D. Eisenhower speak and seeing Field Marshall Montgomery walking his dog. Arnold MacKenzie was a true Canadian patriot.
