SETTING: The musical setting for today is William Mathias. Copies of the setting are available at the entrance to the Church. PRELUDE: Poco Adagio A E Floyd (1877-1974) INTROIT HYMN: TiS 160 ʻFather all –loving and ruling in majestyʼ   SENTENCE: ʻThe Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king, and exalt the power of his anointed.ʼ 1 Samuel 2.10 The service continues on Page 119 & 120 with the Greeting, Prayer of Preparation, Confession (page 159) sung Kyrie, Absolution & Gloria. COLLECT: O God, welcoming refuge for the outcast, and upholder of justice for the oppressed: maintain the hope of the poor, so that the time may soon come when no one need want for food and shelter, and all will learn to share freely following the example of your Son, who gave his very self; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen FIRST READING: 1 Samuel 1.4-20 On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. So it went on year after year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, ʻHannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?ʼ After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: ʻO Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.ʼ As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, ʻHow long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.ʼ But Hannah answered, ʻNo, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.ʼ Then Eli answered, ʻGo in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.ʼ And she said, ʻLet your servant find favour in your sight.ʼ Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. They rose early in the morning and

worshipped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, ʻI have asked him of the Lord .ʼ

Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. PSALM: Song of Hannah (APBA p.429) Chant: James Turle SECOND READING: Hebrews 10.11-14, 19-25 Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, ʻhe sat down at the right hand of Godʼ, and since then has been waiting ʻuntil his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.ʼ For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. GRADUAL HYMN: TiS 245 ʻWe have a gospel to proclaimʼ GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:

Choir/All: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Choir: Be watchful, pray constantly, That you may be worthy to stand before the Son of Man. All: Alleluia, Alleluia! Minister: The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark 13.1-11 All: Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, ʻLook, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!ʼ Then Jesus asked him, ʻDo you see these

great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.ʼ When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, ʻTell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?ʼ Then Jesus began to say to them, ʻBeware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, “I am he!” and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs. ʻAs for yourselves, beware; for they will hand you over to councils; and you will be beaten in synagogues; and you will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them. And the good news must first be proclaimed to all nations. When they bring you to trial and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say; but say whatever is given you at that time, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.   SERMON: Rev Canon Gary Harch PRAYERS: Including: Venezuela - (V, The Episcopal Church): +Orlando Guerrero The Diocese of Melbourne: +Philip Freier; Regional Bishops: +Philip Huggins, +Paul White, +Genieve Blackwell; Clergy and People The Parish of Aspley-Albany Creek: Nicholas Whereat, Sharon Baird, Peter Lockyer, Ian McWilliam Brisbane Private Hospital Ministry St Paulʼs School: Headmaster - Paul Browning; Chaplain - Mark Leam; Chair of School Council - Heather Walker; members of School Council St Maryʼs Short term prayer list: see the names on the list at entrance. SIDEPERSONS' ROSTER: Our next sidepersons' roster is out - many thanks to our wonderful team for helping out again. However, we would love to welcome some more volunteers - the more people available, the less everyone has to do! The duties for either welcoming worshippers, and giving out, and putting away books, or for the morning tea roster are quite straightforward, and for anyone new to our church, is a great way to meet other church members. Anyone who might be interested please contact Alex Daunt on 0416152313, [email protected], or see me in church.

~~ CARE FOR OUR GROUNDS: Our grounds are looking good and to keep them that way some extra help is needed. Please let the wardens know if you can help. Judy Noble is organising new plantings in the grounds around the memorial gardens.

Please talk with her about the proposals.
