CHAPTER 5: SAVING THE TRAINThe children witness a landslide that covers the

railway line. The children prevent an imminent accident by waving the girls’ red petticoats. The train comes to rest just in time, at about twenty metres from where Bobbie stands on the tracks. Weeks later, a ceremony is held at the station to commemorate the children’s bravery. The Old Gentleman presents the children with a gold watch each and meets their mother at home. The children relay that eventful day to their mother.

ROBERTA (BOBBIE)A twelve years old girl. Twelve lighted candles on it,

one for each of Bobbie’s years. (p 22)

The eldest child in the family ....she was always called Bobbie,

and was the oldest.

(p 1)

Caring “Someone had to stay with you,”

said Bobbie. “I must put out the candles or it will burn itself out.” (p 49)

The second child and the only son in the family.Next came Peter... (p 1)

Courageous“Perhaps he’s had an accident,” said Peter, “Let’s go and look.” (p 46)

Adventurous“Where shall we go?” said Bobbie, although she already knew the answer. “To the railway, of course!” cried Peter. (p 9)

Innocent“I didn’t think  it was stealing,” said Peter. “There’s so much coal here. I took some from the middle of the heap, and I I thought nobody would mind. And Mother says we’re too poor to have a fire...”. (p 14)

PETER

The youngest child in the family. And the youngest was Phyllis, who was

always trying to be good. (p 1)

Insecure There was a low noise on the

railway line… “Let me go back!”cried Phyllis. (p 47)

Naïve The boy in the red shirt was on

the ground, beside the line. His eyes were closed and he did not move when they reached him. “Is...he dead?” asked Phyllis. (p 47)

PHYLLIS

Homely Mother was almost always at home,

ready to play with the children, or to read to them to the children to them. (p 1)

Protective We have to play ‘being poor’ for a while.

(p 4) 

Practical “Then we can’t have any supper,”

said Phyllis, unhappily. “Yes, we can. We can unpack one of the boxes. There’s some food from the old house.” (p 7)

Resourceful Mother spent every day in her room,

writing stories. Sometimes she managed to sell a story to a magazine, and then there were cakes for tea. (p 12)

MOTHER

Friendly … And a hand waved

back! It was holding a newspaper and it belonged to an old gentleman. (p 15)

Kind and helpful “When I read about your

father in the newspaper at the time, I began trying to find out things.” (p 52)

          Bobbie and her siblings have loving parents.

After their father is taken away, Mother is very sad but she does not tell the children and the children do not ask questions so that their mother will not be upset.

        The children always work together to solve problems, for example when their mother is ill and needs special food and when they have to save the train.

         When a landslide covers the railway tracks, the children act with courage to save the train from a terrible accident.

 In chapter 5, the children managed to save the train and stop a very bad accident from happening.One day, Roberta, Peter and Phyllis saw a landslide which blocked the railway line.The girls used their red petticoats to make flags.The train was moving very fast.Bobbie braved herself and ran on to the railway line and waved her flags.The train finally stopped just twenty metres from Bobbie. The children's bravery saved the people on the rain from meeting with an awful accident and from getting killed.

SAVING THE TRAIN One day , the children were walking by the fence along the top of

the railway line . Phyllis stood by the fence and looked down to the lines at the bottom.

“It’s like looking down the sides of a mountain ,” said Phyllis.

Suddenly , they heard a noise .

“Look at the tree over there!” cried Peter

“It’s a magic!” said Phyllis. “I knew the railway was magic . Look , some other trees are moving too”

Then , everything came crashing down in a dig heap on the railway line below .

“It’s right across the line!” said Phyllis. “And the 11:29 hasn’t gone by yet.

We must let them know at the station, or there will be an awful accident.”

“That isn’t time,” said Bobbie

They thought for a while .

line and wave it ,”said Peter “Our red petticoats! ” said Phyllis. “Let’s take them off.” “we need some sticks as well . “ said Peter . “Now …..”

He took a knife from his pocket. “you are not going to cut them , are you ?” said Phyllis.

“Yes , cut them!” said Bobbie. After finished , it seemed a long time before the railway

lines began to shake , and they heard the train coming. “Wave your flags !” ordered Peter. “The train is not going to stop !” Bobbie shouted and

ran to the line to wave her flags. “Get back , Bobbie!” shouted Peter , as the train come

towards Bobbie . It did stop …. But only twenty metres from Bobbie .And

they had saved the train. Some week later , they invited to the railway station.

A ceremony is held to commemorate their bravery . Then an old gentleman called them across and gave each of them a beautiful gold watch .

“These are from the Northern and Southern Railway Station ,” he said , “to say thank you for the brave and sensible thing that you did to save the train.”

Afterward , the old gentleman walked with them to the little white house . Mother was surprised to see their visitor .

“I am very pleased to meet you but I am sorry we can’t asked you to come and see us again” said Mother.

“I thank you , Madam , for welcoming me to your house today,” said the old gentleman
