Annual Report

DESCRIPTION OF CHAPTER:

The ACS International Chemical Science Chapter in Thailand was

founded in March of 2011 by ACS members living in Thailand.

The principal mission of the Chapter is to provide an opportunity

for ACS members in Thailand to interact with each other for the

purpose of creating stronger professional relationship with ACS

Units, (such as other International Science Chapters and ACS

Divisions), helping the Society to accomplish its international

strategic plans, fortifying the interaction between the ACS and

the Thai society.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

1st joint ACS AGFD-ACS ICSCT Symposium on Agricultural

and Food Chemistry, March 4-5, 2014, Bangkok, Thailand

The Thailand Chapter is combining forces with one of ACS’

oldest Divisions, the 105-year old Division of Agricultural

and Food Chemistry, to present ACS first joint international

chapter-divisional symposium, “1st Joint ACS AGFD-ACS

ICSCT Symposium on Agricultural and Food Chemistry” .

took place March 4-5, 2014 at the Montien Riverside Hotel in

Bangkok, Thailand. The symposium was attended by 180

participants from 12 countries (1. USA, 2. Thailand, 3.

Austria, 4. Australia, 5. Bangladesh, 6. Canada, 7. China, 8.

Egypt, 9. Germany, 10. Malaysia, 11. Indonesia, and 12.

Singapore)

A collaborative project between an ACS Division and the

Thailand Chapter is the first of its kind in ACS. This is also

the first “outreach” activity of AGFD in Asia, a fast-growing

region of the world. Thailand is a promising gateway to

other countries in Asia.

In this symposium, AGFD was collaborating with the

Thailand Chapter in the development of an international

conference on food and agricultural chemistry. Four

internationally recognized scientists, and former AGFD chairs

(Peter Schieberle, Agnes Rimando, Michael Tunick , Lauren

Jackson) assisted the Thailand Chapter members in organizing

symposia on selected topics in food and agricultural chemistry

that are of great interest to and will have a strong impact on

Thailand’s as well as other ASEAN (Association of Southeast

Asian Nations) members’, agriculture and food industries, and

academic and government institutions. The conference serve as a

venue to bring together outstanding scientists and researchers

from Thailand, the U.S., and elsewhere to discuss advances and

opportunities in the area of agricultural and food chemistry.

At the beginning of this year, the ACS President Tom Barton

visited ACS-ICSCT office at Faculty of Science, Siam

University on January 6, 2014. We had a wonderful

ceremony to mark his visit.

Continuing project “Science Café@schools : Food Chemistry

for Life” was organized during Nov-Dec 2013. The project

goal was aiming to encourage students majoring in Science

further aware of the significance of science in their lives.

Two hundred high school students from 4 schools located in

Bangkok and vicinity were attended. The topic of

presentations included 1) Chemistry of Chocolate, 2)

Chemistry of pigment. Students had pre- and post- tests to

evaluate their understanding and participated in pop-

quizzes for recognition awards.

We joined the Education Fair and Exhibition hosted by Siam

University which was held at its downtown Bangkok campus

during Dec 19-20, 2013. The activities were to encourage

high school students to realize the importance of Chemistry

and its application closely related to everyday life. More

than 1,000 participants including teachers and high school

students attended these activities. The synopsis of the

activities was as follows.

Posters presenting American Chemical Society (ACS)

and American Chemical Society International

Chemical Sciences Chapter in Thailand (ACS-ICSCT)

Posters presenting The Nobel Prize in Chemistry and

how they impact to our daily life.

Practical session and demonstration of pigment

chemistry, mini-scale Organic chemistry laboratory (in

accordance with Green Chemistry principles)
