carbonate plant at the Shengda Industrial Park in Xianyang (Shaanxi province). Previous reports had indicated Shandong province as the location of this plant. (See ‘Focus on Pigments’, Jul 2007, 5). The new lines employ the company’s advanced cost-efficient membrane diffusion technology, which is claimed to reduce production costs by 5-7%, compared with the traditional ultra-gravity technology. Membrane diffusion technology also enables the production of better quality carbonate particles, which opens up a broader range of market applications. The two new lines have a combined capacity of 40,000 tonnes/y, bringing total capacity at Xianyang to 100,000 tonnes/y. The company’s total capacity is now 130,000 tonnes/y. A further 60,000 tonnes/y of capacity will be added before the end of 2007. In 2Q 2007, ShengdaTech sold 28,029 tonnes of nanoparticulate calcium carbonate, generating $10.8 M in sales revenue. Of this total, sales to rubber and tyre manufacturers accounted for 51.4%, sales to manufacturers of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) accounted for 34.4%. Sales to other end-use sectors, including latex/emulsions, adhesives, paints and printing inks accounted for the remaining 14.2%. The original deadline was end-June, but this waived in order to allow time for the submission of “last-minute bids.” Apollo, which has already agreed to buy Huntsman – the world’s fourth largest TiO 2 supplier – was believed to be considering a bid for Tronox. However, on 25 September Tronox declared that it would be holding on to the Uerdingen plant after all because it had not received bids that “accurately reflected the long-term value of this worldclass facility.” TiO 2 Worldwide Update, Jul/Oct 2007, 15 (4/5), 17 Japan: Ishihara – TiO 2 Following a review of chlorine supply arrangements for its 68,000 tonnes/y chloride-route TiO 2 pigment plant, Ishihara Sangyo Kaisha (ISK) has decided to establish its own chloralkali facility at the Yokkaichi complex in Mie prefecture. The plant should be commissioned in March 2008, with production to be increased to full- scale by August 2008. At that time, it should be producing 27,000 tonnes/y of chlorine and 30,000 tonnes/y of caustic soda. ISK states that this move will enable the company to make annual savings of “several hundred million Yen” as a result of insulating it from the current supply tightness and rising prices in the Japanese chlorine market.
