Something to think about………
There are three days in a week! Yesterday, today, and tomorrow; two of which we should not concern ourselves.
Yesterday is gone; it has passed forever beyond our control. All the money in the world cannot bring back yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word said. It’s gone.
Tomorrow - with all of its possibilities, promises or burdens - tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control
“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” Matthew 6:34 (MSG)
"Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of." ~Benjamin Franklin
Tomorrow may be "only a day away," but tomorrow never really comes. Say what Helen? That’s right, the moment you wake up to a new day, it's called today, not tomorrow. So why do we spend so much time anticipating tomorrow?
“With the past, I have nothing to do; nor with the future. I live now.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
This leaves only one day in which to be concerned - today. It is usually not the experience of “today” that causes us worry and fear - it is the remorse or bitterness for something which happened yesterday and the dread of what tomorrow may bring.
James 14:14 – says, “For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”
“Yesterday is a canceled check; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have; so spend it wisely.” ~ Kay Lyons
Time is our most precious commodity, there isn't an endless supply!
“Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today.” ~James Dean

Moving…I get it now!
I’ve worked at Moosehaven for almost 8 years and moved to the Marketing Department
about 7 months ago. Time flies when you’re having fun! Over the years, I’ve been
sympathetic with residents on the amount of downsizing they may have to do and the
amount of details they have to see to when considering a move to a retirement commu-
nity. Having lived my entire life in only 3 different homes, I’ve only had to move as an
adult once. I find that I’ve been very lucky indeed.
My daughter, Connor, is currently a senior in high school and we are planning her move
over the summer to college…in an apartment…without her parents…in a college town…
with lots of boys... Can you detect the anxiety? For the first time in MANY years, I am
planning what to send, what to buy, what to keep home for when she visits, phone lines,
internet, laundry facilities, food and the list goes on. It struck me that these are the
same plans that our residents go through when they are making their retirement
choices and moves to retirement communities. It is a major life decision and is one that
should be made with care.
At Moosehaven I know our staff members do a fantastic job of assisting the residents
during the stages of planning, downsizing, moving and residing. Our staff proactively
approaches resident move-ins with the goal being an easy transition for all involved. I
am so happy when new residents move in because I know without a doubt they will
receive the best in top-rated healthcare, amazing amenities, caring staff and a quality of
life that is outstanding. I’ve always known the end result “after the move” and what a
great lifestyle we offer at Moosehaven, but I have a new respect for the front end of the
entire process!
What are your retirement plans? Are you ready for a move? Please visit

Up Close & Personal
with
LUIS SANTOS
We think that residents might be interested in learning about some of the employees at Moosehaven.
So, this month, I am going to share a little bit about Luis Santos with you.
Luis works in the Maintenance Department and I’m sure you have seen him working around the campus
maybe even in your room. Luis was born on June 16, 1980 to Sandra and Jesus Santos in Homestead,
Florida. He has two brothers and five sisters, eleven nieces and nephews. They all live in south Florida.
When Luis finished high school he worked at a warehouse as a forklift driver and worked retail at Home
Depot and Sears.
Luis met his wife Samera in South Florida and dated for about six years. They were married August 6,
2006. That is when they moved to Orange Park so they could be close to her family. They have two
children, Tatiana, 12 and Luis Jr., 11. Just recently his daughter Tatiana was presented an award at
Orange Park City Hall and got to meet the mayor. She placed 2nd for an article she wrote entitled “If I
Were Mayor of Orange Park”. She wrote in her article that if she were mayor she would rebuild some of
the streets and sidewalks and have them cleaned and build more parks. It was a thrill for the whole
family. Their son Luis Jr., is in the Math Club and Jogging Club and loves Physical Education.
Samera is a stay at home mom and very involved in the children’s activities and donates a lot of time to
their school. Luis says he is the lucky one because he gets home cooked meals every night. One of their
favorite meals is Philipino food. As a family they like to go to movies and parks and spend time at the
beach in the summer.
Luis has worked at Moosehaven for five years and loves having a job that has meaning in his life.
Serving the residents is very fulfilling to him and he loves seeing their appreciation. He gets to do
different things every day and gets to interact with the residents on occasion. He said the Maintenance
Department is a good team and they work together.
Luis takes pride in being a good husband to Samera and father to Tatiana and Luis Jr. He is a good
provider and very close to his family. He loves going to new places and trying new things and is grateful
for every day.
I asked Luis if there was something he would like to share with the residents and he quoted Romans
12:2 “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind.

BILL’S BOARD Someone asked me “what’s up with Bill’s Board?” They pointed out my last six articles have been about currency devaluation, unhappy people, fatigue, alcoholism, depression and death. I thought about saying something like “well you have to give the people what they want”, but I prudently opted for “I did not realize that”. Now before Susan changes the name of this section to Dark Shadows by Barnabas Collins I will lighten up on the subject matter. How about happiness? Yes, let’s talk about happiness.
There are sources ranging from psychology to religion to pop music purporting to know the secret of happiness. Psychology Today ran an article by David Myers titled Secret of Happiness in which he basi-cally says acting happy will make you happy. Happy people have self-esteem. So, act as if you like your-self. Happy people are optimistic. So, act as if you are filled with hope. Happy people are extroverted. So, act as if you are outgoing. Happy people believe they choose their destiny. So, act as if you are mak-ing choices. He says the key is in the action. You must actually do these things every day, even if you have to fake it for a while. Over time it eventually takes root and becomes a part of your personality, a part of your life.
Rabbi Noah Weinberg wrote an article called The Secret of Happiness in which he says happiness is a state of mind. It comes from mastering the art of appreciating what you have. Your gifts are of great value. Everything that you see, feel, taste, experience, your relationships all have worth on which you cannot put a price. It takes a lot of work to maintain this mind set. He suggests that you take time daily to count your blessings and your pleasures. Everyday notice, even write down, the things for which you are grateful.
Billy Graham wrote a book titled Secret of Happiness (do you see a pattern here?). He says happiness comes when we seek what is really important and refers us to the lessons taught in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-11): To be poor in spirit willing to say I am sorry and try to right wrongs, to have the ability to mourn and really feel for others, to be meek with a gentle, patient (not weak) spirit, to seek righteous-ness, to be merciful, to be pure in heart, to be a peacemaker, and possess a willingness to be persecuted for righteousness sake. To seek these things shapes how we act and interact with the world.
Bobby McFerrin says “don’t worry, be happy” in a song by the same title. The song also says “In life expect some trouble, when you worry you make it double, don’t worry, be happy.” In his song, Happy, Pherrell Williams says “Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth, Clap along if you know what happiness is to you.”
What does this say about happiness? Happiness comes from what you do, how you act and what you seek. It comes from how you appreciate and take stock of what life brings. It requires gratitude. The things we worry about most frequently, money, success, possessions, can’t bring happiness. The truth in achieving happiness depends on what happiness means to you. If being happy is about the things you do every day and your attitude toward life then your happiness is really about you.
So, decide to clap along and don’t worry, be happy. If I knew how to whistle in writing I would do it here. Pretend you hear Bobby whistling.

Where in the world does the time go, it’s March already and we just passed Christmas yesterday?
Moosehaven applications have slowed down in the past two months. I would have thought that with the extremely cold weather up north that the applica-tions would have come rolling in.
Well, the good news is that we have a bunch of new residents being admitted in March. Don & Barbara Bell on March 11th, Robert & Darlene Monteith on March 12th, Lester Budz on March 16th, Ray Shaw on March 19th, Austin & Melba Montgomery on March 26th and Patricia Wilson on March 30th. Remember your first week at Moosehaven and please make all of our new residents welcome when you meet them.

Happy Almost St. Patrick’s Day! Growing up under a household of Madigans, Devaneys and
McNultys meant that no matter what else was going on in our lives, we tried to get home to
mom’s for the semi-traditional meal of ham and cabbage (I’ve never liked cornbeef), home-made
Irish Soda bread and green pistachio cake. But even if you aren’t of Irish descent and your family
doesn’t make you at least try the jig every year, everybody is said to have the luck of the Irish on
St. Patrick’s Day.
Unfortunately, and to the surprise of many, luck or the absence of good luck has little to do with
whether or not you will have a fall. As reported by the US CDC, one third of Americans over the
age of 65 fall each year. Those who do fall can suffer various injuries including fractures,
dislocations, and develop a reasonably strong fear of falling again. Knowing and evaluating your
own risk factors and being proactive can help reduce your risk for falls today. I took a continuing
education class with an excellent speaker a few weeks ago. Basically, the bad news is that the
list of risk factors for falls is almost endless. The good news is there are some easily helpful
things you can do to reduce those risks.
Prepare! Make your environment safer. Plan ahead, reduce clutter, ensure there is
proper lighting, and add rails and grabs bars where needed.
Ask! Review your current prescriptions with your physician to identify any medications
that may cause you to become drowsy or dizzy throughout the day. Routinely taking
more than four prescription medications a day is a known fall risk.
Check Up! Make sure you routinely visit the eye doctor and get your vision checked.
Be Active! Most importantly, you must exercise and stay active. Exercise will allow you
to increase your leg strength and this is directly correlated with improved balance. A
great form of exercise to prevent falls is taking part in chair yoga classes. These
classes focus on the exercises that will strengthen your core and improve your
reflexes, which in turn improves balance.
Awareness is very important, but even with taking all the proper precautions, sometimes falls
still happen. But if you have developed adequate musculature, falls are less likely to result in
serious injury. You can protect your joints with your improved muscle tone!
Be on the lookout for a Chair Yoga class being offered as part of our wellness program at Moose-
haven in the near future. I am also working on choreographing Geri-Dance classes, so look for
those to be offered in the next few weeks as well. Dancing and moving to music makes it less
like work and more like fun. And no, no matter how many times my mother has one too many
green beers and tries to teach me how to do the jig I still can’t do it, so that won’t be part of the
Geri-Dance choreograhy .
