1. regulate our own emotions 2. stay connected with our child/ren 3. COACH instead of CONTROL IT’S ABOUT MANAGING OURSELVES…..how we respond, sets the tone for how they behave.

everyone is doing really is! Let’s see where the FPS 2021 NAPLAN results can take us in our ‘next step’

Attendance Expectations in Remote Learning While we are Remote Learning from home, this is still school. With that comes normal school expectations. We have had a range of attendance and engagement from students throughout each week, from 100% engagement in WebEx sessions and submission of Learning tasks, to 0% in both, which is of significant concern. We are extremely motivated for our students to continue in their learning regardless. At a very basic level, the Department of Education requires us to mark daily attendance. As Remote Learning is school, we have now raised the expectations regarding marking your child’s daily attendance. We want to see and hear from your child each day of school. Attendance for each school day will be confirmed when both of the following has been achieved:

• Attending at least 1 full WebEx Session

• Submitting at least 1 quality piece of work on Compass by 3.30pm We understand that this could be challenging for some and some will need to significantly lift their current engagement. But this is school and we need every child to be learning every day, just like normal. Parents/Guardians, this is where we really need your support and help. We will be regularly tracking attendance and asking for an explanation when required. Please get in contact with us if you need further support or have any concerns as we’d be happy to speak with you.

DID You Know? When children participate in regular physical activity, it boosts their physical and mental health and improves their academic performance. Physical activity throughout the day also improves concentration, and the ability to retain information and solve problems. There are many benefits to being active and getting your move on, but a lot of children aren’t moving enough, particularly while learning from home. 15 minutes 4 times a day is all it takes. To help support children to stay active while learning from home, families can access a range of free COVID Safe ideas to stay active and use games through Get Active Victoria. Families should remember that whatever gets children moving, gets them active. https://www.getactive.vic.gov.au/

Reading: In Prep, we have continued to learn about our new reading strategies. We have been focusing on Skippy Frog and Chunky Monkey. Skippy Frog helps us to skip the word, hop back and read again. Chunky Monkey reminds us to chunk words into parts you know. The Preps are encouraged to use these reading strategies at home to help them continue to develop their reading skills.

In Grade 1 and 2, we are focusing on Iggy Iguana and Tempo Turtle. Iggy Iguana reminds us to use clues in the text and your own thinking to make inferences. Tempo Turtle reminds us to adjust your speed to match the purpose of reading. The Grade 1/2s are encouraged to use these reading strategies at home to help them further develop their reading skills.

News Writing:

The Preps have focused on the Jolly phonics sound /ay/ like the words play or tray. Also, the sound /oy/ in the words like toy and enjoy.

The Preps have also continued to learn about procedural writing. Procedural writing tells how to do something. We have been writing about short and simple procedures like, ‘How to make pancakes’ or ‘How to wash your hands.’

News The Grade 1 and 2s, have been continuing procedural writing. Writing about procedures like, ‘How to make a Jam sandwich’ or ‘How to make pancakes.’ This week we are focusing on Ban the Boring! When we create a procedure, we only want to keep the most interesting and important parts in our final copy.

Mathematics:

Maths: In Prep, we have been focusing on understanding the purpose of instructions. Instructions are something we follow to help us find something, make something or move to another place. They are usually given in small steps that help us get to an end point by doing a series of little tasks. You might need instructions to: build Lego, bake cupcakes or go to a new park. The Preps have also been focusing on Location and using direction words like LEFT and RIGHT to help tell exactly where someone needs to go. We can use special words to describe the position of something in relation to another object.

News For example:

Lennox and Zac are IN FRONT of the cupboard. Jett and Nala are UNDER the table.

Jhett and Mitchell are ON TOP of the table.

The Preps have also been learning about division and sharing items into equal groups. We use division when we need to find out how we can share a group into equal or fair parts. In addition to this we have been focusing on 3D shapes.

The Grade 1 and 2s have been focusing on addition and subtraction and using mental strategies like fact families. We have also been focusing on mass by directly comparing common objects in mass and using appropriate language like heavier or lighter.

Grade 1/2s have also been reviewing skip counting, specifically working on skip counting by 2s and 3s. Skip counting is when we count in a pattern that skips some numbers. Skip counting is useful for counting larger groups or collections, more quickly. In addition, we have been revising our knowledge of months of the year and how to read a calendar.

Reading: In Reading, our senior students have been working on identifying text features while they are reading. The Grade 3/4s started by looking at the text features found in non-fiction texts before looking at fiction. They then compared the text features that had been found in their fiction and non-fiction texts before looking at how these differ to a procedural text. The Grade 5/6 students have been creating mini books to display the fiction, non-fiction and procedural text features that they found. Our students have also been learning to use their prior knowledge to connect with the texts that they are reading. The 5/6 students created Dot-to Dots using key words and connecting the dots using their prior knowledge. The 3/4 students used their visualisation skills to help them show their prior knowledge and updated their visualisations after they had completed reading their texts.

News Writing: Our seniors have continued to develop their ability to write procedural texts. The students were asked to write a procedural text that was then shared with the rest of the class during a Class WebEx Session to try and teach them a new skill or trick. It was fun trying to follow along! The teachers gave the students the challenge of following procedural texts that were missing key text features or pieces of information. Once they were able to identify the missing elements, the students had to try and up level the procedural text, by including all the missing parts. The 3/4 students were also given the task to write a procedural text to teach their teacher how to draw or make something. Needless to say, some of the results gave the students a good laugh!

News Maths: In Maths, our 3/4 students looked at patterns using repeated addition and subtraction. They had to find the pattern, continue it and estimate what the pattern would look like once they reached 100, 1,000 or 10,000! They also developed mathematical strategies such as the split strategy to help them with addition and subtraction and the CUBES strategy to help them answer worded problems. In measurement, our Grade 3/4s used their grid reference knowledge to find places and describe places on a map and used directional language to guide people around to different locations. The Grade 5/6 students continued to expand on their knowledge of fractions by looking at how we can add them to find a whole. They also tested their knowledge on balanced equations, by trying to determine if given equations were actually balanced before attempting to find the missing number in incomplete balanced equations. In measurement, our Grade 5/6 students were working on trying to find the area of rectangles and irregular shapes. Using this knowledge they were then able to work on finding the area of parallelograms where the opposite sides of a four sided shape are parallel with one another.
