Illuminated by Fire Pull up a chair and join us by the fire… From June 29–July 3, Melbourne’s iconic Fed Square will be transformed by some of Victoria’s most gifted regional artists and their communities. As part of Regional Arts Victoria’s statewide project Illuminated by Fire, 10 extraordinary projects will be installed and showcased with a series of events, talks and tours. Stave off the winter chill and join our artists on a guided tour through 10 projects as diverse as they are beautiful. Listen to how they explored the theme of fire through art: how do you cook the perfect scone in a wood-fired stove? What makes a Spider Orchid bloom? And how can adversity bring communities together? They will also shine a light through the winter gloom with guided night tours that explore the installations after dark. Make sure you rug up when the sun sets, as all the artworks will come alive with light displays and stunning fire imagery. The artworks will be supplemented by a program of daily talks conducted by emergency services workers, writers, academics, artists, and journalists on the role of fire in our environment. Take a self-guided adventure through art, or let yourself be hosted by one of our regional artists. We all know that fire has the capacity to tear communities apart. Join us at Fed Square to see how it can bring us together. Thank you Project Supporters

Illuminated by FirePull up a chair and join us by the fire…

From June 29–July 3, Melbourne’s iconic Fed Square will be transformed by some of Victoria’s most gifted regional artists and their communities.

Make sure yourug up when the sun sets, as all the artworks will come alive with light displays and stunning fire imagery.

Thank you

The ProjectIlluminated By Fire

Project TeamIllumininated by Fire - Dunkeld (‘The Cook and the Woodcutter’) is the

creation of artist Trevor Flinn. Trevor spent a number of months asking people from Dunkeld and district to both demonstrate and talk about their wood

burning stove. He spoke to cooks and woodcutters and recorded numerous sequences that became part of a special installation in the Dunkeld hall.

By combining loops of recorded footage with a live demonstration of woodcutting, firelighting, and scone baking Trevor invited his audience to

experience the art of cooking with fire; a fascinating aspect of country life. A souvenir cookbook The Cook’s Book: Wood-Fired recipes from Dunkeld

and District was also created as part of this project.

Trevor is a recent graduate of the VCA (2004), majoring in Fine Art, Sculpture; he moved back to his home town of Dunkeld soon after

graduation. Over the last few years Trevor’s practice has evolved and he is currently interested in creating video works that involve people

telling fascinating stories. Humour is a recurrent and important element in Trevor’s work, as are beautiful images for which is he is on

the constant look out for.

In 2007 Trevor received a Next Wave Kick Start Grant of $5,000 which he used to transform Dunkeld’s derelict railway station into a thriving

artist run space which now operates as Off the Rails Gallery, a not-for-profit artist-run initiative managed by a small group of Dunkeld

artists. The space is progressively developing and encourages local artists to exhibit their work as well as offering the community the opportunity to participate in special exhibitions and workshops.

Other previous work of Trevor’s includes ‘Film that will end in Death’¸ a multi-screen video installation about people involved in risky

activities, which featured as part of the 2010 Next Wave festival, and ‘The Puma, the Stranger and the Mountain’, a series of short videos about a group of pumas who form a punk rock band, complete with substance abuse issues and limited musical ability, called ‘The Meat

Eaters’.
