Feeding the Community: A Family Tradition

Jerry Lundergan says it all started with the simple desire to give back to their community. As owners of Lundy’s Catering, Jerry and his family decided to provide a sit-down Thanksgiving dinner for individuals and families in need coming to The Salvation Army.

The menu consists of cranberry salad, Jell-O salad, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, stuffing with dressing, carved ham, carved turkey, and rolls. And of course, pumpkin pie and pecan pie for dessert.

Each year, Jerry’s family, friends, and staff at Lundy’s Catering donate and prepare the food for about 800 people on Thanksgiving Day. They come as early as 4 a.m. to ensure all the food is cooked and ready to serve when people arrive.

Abigail Dobson, one of Jerry’s five daughters, has three children of her own now, ages 12, 10, and 6. For them, this is one of the highlights of their year.

“They want to come home to their grandparents’ house because priority number one is to go to The Salvation Army. That’s pretty touching, and that makes everything we’re doing worthwhile,” Abigail says. “If we can give them a hug and shake their hand, and our children can sit down with their children, and they found a friend, then again, that’s what this is all about.”

When neighbors and families have nowhere to turn, your support is there for them through food assistance, clothing, housing assistance, and other vital care. As we prepare for the upcoming holiday season, your generosity can help ensure we can meet the needs of anyone who comes through our doors. Thank you for your continued support.

Dear Friend,

One of the greatest privileges that we have is getting to see the entire holiday season from a perspective of hope! Many in our community find themselves in need every day, but during the holiday season, they feel even more hopeless and alone.

Your support helps provide hope to a struggling father, mother, or child. Together we can strive to ensure every dollar, every hour, and every encounter make a better tomorrow possible for our neighbors who need help this holiday.

One story that sticks with us at this time of year is a mother who approached our Angel Tree display in Fayette Mall. She tearfully shared that she had lost a son to suicide, and that by choosing a child who had the same name and age as her son, she found a sense of healing. She said by reaching out to someone in need, Christmas had meaning for her again.

I am so grateful for people like this mother and people like you, who give love and support to our neighbors in need. What you give so selflessly makes a profound impact on our community.

At this special time of year, we thank God for the joy of serving with you in hope and love around Central Kentucky this holiday season. Thank you for your compassion and generosity!

God bless you,

Majors Heather and William Garrett

A Personal Word fromHeather and William

For more than three decades, the Lundergan family has provided a special Thanksgiving meal for hundreds of neighbors.

For the last 30 years, The Salvation Army has been grateful to partner with medical students at the University of Kentucky to provide space for a medical clinic that helps low-income families.

The clinic began because a group of medical students noticed there was a severe lack of health care options for low-income families in our community. They decided to generously volunteer their time and skills to organize the clinic, which was housed in a storage room outside The Salvation Army’s kitchen.

What started as a one-room urgent care has grown to include a pediatric clinic, weekly smoking cessation classes, vaccination clinics, preventative nutrition and exercise classes, and monthly dermatology and ophthalmology clinics. The facility is now housed in our Emergency Homeless Shelter, providing access to the patients who need it most.

Life on the streets had been especially hard for Lorraine.* Although she was more than 50 years old, she struggled with an ongoing mental health condition and tried to medicate it through substance abuse.

To make her situation even more serious, she was hit by a car while crossing the street and broke her hip. It was clear to first responders that Lorraine could not return to the streets without endangering her own life or the lives of others. Sheriff Kathy Witt, an advisory board member with The Salvation Army, was well acquainted with the services and

ministry provided for women and children at the Hanger Lodge. Considering Lorraine’s many challenges and health care needs, other agencies contacted had not been able to help. When she learned of this desperate situation, Sheriff Witt knew a phone call to The Salvation Army would be given full consideration and prayer. Thanks to your generosity, we could meet Lorraine’s extraordinary needs. In addition to three meals a day, clothing, and housing assistance, she also received psychiatric care and counseling.

Slowly but surely, Lorraine began to heal physically, emotionally, and mentally. For the last year, she’s been able to live on her own and has not returned to the streets. On an ongoing basis, The Salvation Army social service staff visit her apartment to bring clothing and basic hygiene items she may need.

Your compassion and generosity ensure women like Lorraine have access to the vital care they need. Thank you for blessing so many lives in our community with healing and the hope to move forward.

Nearly every medical student at UK now volunteers at the clinic in some capacity. Allison Frazure, one of last year’s student clinic managers, says the clinic has had a substantial impact on the students who serve there, giving them hands-on experience in combination with their academic studies.

Through your generosity, we are grateful to provide a space where children and families can find quality medical care for their needs. Your support is making a difference in our community every day!
