Thank You

WelcomeThe 2016-2017 school year was one of exciting progress for Pickering College. This was the second year that the entire school, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12, was fully engaged with the Global Leadership Program. Our first graduating class under the Global Leadership Program, our Grade 12s, showed incredible innovation and creativity in the global issues solutions they presented in their Capstone projects. Upon graduating, they walked through the Pillars confident and well prepared for post-secondary and beyond. They also know that we will always be here to support them and welcome them back to the Hilltop as treasured alumni. Our debate team, only five years along, sent its first competitor to the World Debating Championships in Australia. We brought the LEGO League and Reggio learning to the Junior School. We also added sports championships to the banners in Egan House, performed brilliantly at national music festivals, and between the efforts of staff and students, served over 100 not-for-profit organizations with gifts of volunteer time and financial donations.

Our supporters responded to the successes of our students and the passion of our educators. Through support for the Holiday Home Tour and the Golf Tournament, by providing thousands of volunteer hours, by donating generous annual gifts to financial aid and athletics, by building our endowments, and by providing exceptional support for the Light The Way capital campaign and the building of the Centre for Creativity and Innovation, our community continues to give of their time, talent and treasure to build a bright future at Pickering College.

What a wonderful example this sets for the students in our care and for the community we serve. Our future leaders witness this generosity of spirit from our parents, alumni, alumni parents, staff, their fellow students and friends. The school continues to grow from “strength to strength” as Charles Boyd, our longest-serving employee, often says. This is the result of your support. As you look through the pages of this magazine, we hope you feel our gratitude for what each of our volunteers and donors have provided. Your support allows our school and our students to thrive now, and into the future. Thank you.

Thanks to you we are halfway to our fundraising goal! As of June 30, 2017, $5M of our ambitious $10 million goal was received or pledged in support of the Pickering College Campus Master Plan. We continue to work diligently with our architects, Salter Pilon, as well as the Town of Newmarket and York Region to complete the plans and approvals for the new Centre for Creativity and Innovation, which will be built on North field. This building will complement the school’s heritage structures while offering teaching and learning spaces firmly focussed on the future of education. Approvals have been received for the renovation of the front circle, and final approvals are expected early in 2018 from the Town and Region for the Centre for Creativity and Innovation.

Why is this building so critical to Pickering College? What will this new building mean for our school? Through this build and this campaign, we are continuing to usher in a new era, one that began with the innovation of the Global Leadership Program. The Centre for Creativity and Innovation will feature innovative, more efficient facilities to welcome more students who will inspire us all. New light-filled classrooms, including space for specialty programs like robotics, learning spaces specifically geared to students’ age and stage—this building will allow what is already an excellent educational experience to flourish and meet the demands of future programming.

Thank you to everyone who has had the vision and determination to support this campaign. We appreciate each and every one of you for your support for the school in this journey. We look forward to what 2018 will bring for our school and campus!

For more information on the Light The Way capital campaign, and how you can help, contact Magdalena (Meg) Bodnar, Director, Light The Way Capital Campaign, at [email protected] or 1-877-895-1700 ext. 254.

Your support makes great things happen. Thank you.

18TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT – JUNE 22, 2017 On behalf of Pickering College and the 2017 Pickering College Golf Tournament Committee, thank you to our supporters for their participation in the 18th Annual Pickering College Golf Tournament, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Newmarket. It was a spectacular day, highlighted by sunshine, lots of House spirit, and fun features through the Pop Culture theme. Nearly $80,000 was raised at the tournament, held on June 22, 2017, with the proceeds directed towards the Light The Way capital campaign, specifically toward the school’s front entrance redesign.

This year we were pleased to recognize alumni parents Paul Clubbe ’61 and Claude Gautier as the 2017 recipients of the Foster ’46 recognition award. Paul and Claude co-chaired the golf tournament for over a decade and were steadfastly committed to the growth and overall success of this event.

This year the electronic auction system, Givergy, was added to enable us to invite the greater PC community to be part of our silent auction, and they participated enthusiastically! Thank you to all of our bidders for your immense support—the auction raised more than double the auction proceeds from last year’s tournament. Heartfelt thanks to our lead sponsors, contest sponsors, hole sponsors, prize donors, players, guests, volunteers and to the PC Community who made this event such a success for Pickering College. We were delighted with the strong presence of our Pickering College alumni, and look forward to welcoming all participants again for the 2018 tournament!

There are many ways to make a gift to Pickering College:

Gifts of Cash, Cheque or Credit Card: You can choose to make a one-time gift or a monthly gift.

Gifts of Securities and Mutual Fund Shares: You can reduce your capital gains tax by donating appreciated securities to PC. It’s a wonderful way to benefit both you and the school.

Matching Gifts: Many companies offer a Matching Gift program. Please contact your HR Department to inquire whether a Matching Gift is possible.

Monthly Giving: Giving monthly is easy and convenient. Your monthly donation can be charged to your credit card or you may charge your school account. This is a great way to have your manageable monthly amount make a large impact every year.

Commemorative/Tribute Gifts: Through your donation, you may choose to pay tribute to someone special. This gift can be made in honour of a teacher, advisor, coach, or friend who has had a positive influence and made a difference in your PC experience. Tribute Gifts can include:

Dining Hall Chair and Table Dedications, wherein an engraved plaque is placed on each chair and/or table that is dedicated. A wonderful gift for alumni, for current students, or teachers.

Learning Commons Tribute Program, wherein PC families can honour students’ birthdays or other special occasions by making an investment in library resources.

Grad Gift: The graduating class partic-ipates in deciding what their grad gift will support each year. This has includ-ed establishing endowments, supporting programs and investing in the Light The Way capital campaign.

International Gifts: PC uses FRISBE (Friends of Independent Schools and Better Education) to facilitate dona-tions from U.S. alumni and friends to Pickering College. FRISBE is a licensed U.S. non-profit organization and can issue US tax receipts. We are happy to send a Canadian charitable tax receipt to donors residing outside of North America.

Gifts in Kind: Gifts in Kind can include auction items for events, services to assist our school operations, or gifts of art and property.

Planned Giving: Please join Pickering College’s Firelighter community by making a gift to Pickering College in your will as part of your estate planning. You will have the comfort of knowing that you are ensuring that the Spirit of Community, so profound in Pickering College, lives on for future generations.

So simple. So necessary.
