In order to make these times of prayer fruitful, and to encourage others to come, I want to explore what it is that we do during this time of silence with the Lord. In the Church's ritual book for the Worship of the Eucharist Outside Mass,we read that Exposition of the holy Eucharist […] is intended to acknowledge Christ's marvelous presence in the Sacrament. Exposition invites us to the spiritual union with Him that culminates in sacramental communion. Thus is fosters very well the worship which is due to Christ in spirit and in truth. This kind of exposition must clearly express the cult [i.e., manner of worshiping] of the Blessed Sacrament in its relationship to the Mass.” (82) This section of the ritual for Adoration gives us a wonderful key to understand what we are doing when we sit (or kneel) in silence before the Blessed Sacrament during exposition. Our worship of the Eucharist is meant to culminate in sacramental communion. That is, our time in Adoration is meant especially to prepare us for the next time that we will receive the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ during the celebration of Holy Mass. We are already familiar with an experience of gazing at the Blessed Sacrament in order to prepare to receive Holy Communion: at every Mass, the priest elevates the Host and says: Behold the Lamb of God.This act of adoration, of staring lovingly at the Blessed Sacrament with a sense of wonder and awe in our hearts born of the knowledge that Christ loves us so much that He is present with us, this act of adoration is always connected with our unspeakable appreciation for the fact that, not only is Christ present with us, but He also deigns to feed us with Himself in order to provide us with spiritual nourishment: Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. One way to think about Adoration, therefore, is that it is an extended revisiting of this one brief moment of the Mass, prolonged over several minutes, or an hour, or however long we spend in this time of prayer. If you think you might be able to commit one hour of your time, between 9am and 6pm, on the Tuesdays of Advent (December 4 th , 11 th , & 18 th ), I invite you to please sign up on the sheets located at the doors of the church. We will record the times that people are planning to be in church on those days, and find volunteers for the times that are under-staffedin order to ensure that there are always multiple adorers present in the church during these times of Adoration. This will provide for the safety of the Blessed Sacrament, comfort for those who might otherwise feel anxious about being alone in church, and it will be a manifestation of the faith of our community to all those whom the Lord will call to walk in off the street.I think we will all be surprised to see what the Lord does when we spend time with Him in prayer! Making the most of Adoration Last week I wrote about the extended hours of Adoration of the

Blessed Sacrament we will have in church every Tuesday this Advent. In order to make these times of prayer fruitful, and to encourage others to come, I want to explore what it is that we do during this time of silence with the Lord.

This section of the ritual for Adoration gives us a wonderful key to understand what we are doing when we sit (or kneel) in silence before the Blessed Sacrament during exposition. Our worship of the Eucharist is meant to “culminate in sacramental communion.” That is, our time in Adoration is meant especially to prepare us for the next time that we will receive the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ during the celebration of Holy Mass. We are already familiar with an experience of gazing at the Blessed Sacrament in order to prepare to receive Holy Communion: at every Mass, the priest elevates the Host and says: “Behold the Lamb of God.” This act of adoration, of staring lovingly at the Blessed Sacrament with a sense of wonder and awe in our hearts born of the knowledge that Christ loves us so much that He is present with us, this act of adoration is always connected with our unspeakable appreciation for the fact that, not only is Christ present with us, but He also deigns to feed us with Himself in order to provide us with spiritual nourishment: “Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.” One way to think about Adoration, therefore, is that it is an extended revisiting of this one brief moment of the Mass, prolonged over several minutes, or an hour, or however long we spend in this time of prayer. This will provide for the safety of the Blessed Sacrament, comfort for those who might otherwise feel anxious about being alone in church, and it will be a manifestation of the faith of our community to all those whom the Lord will call to walk in “off the street.” I think we will all be surprised to see what the Lord does when we spend time with Him in prayer!
