Thanksgiving: United States but not only.

I've never had Thanksgiving before and it's going to be a new and exciting experience.

Although this holiday is not popular in Europe, there are many other countries all over the world that

have their own Thanksgiving.

The Canadian version is the one closest to the American: it's on the second Monday of October

and Canadians usually have a full three-day weekend for the celebration. The reason behind the

difference on the date with the American Thanksgiving is geographical; autumn season starts earlier in

Canada than in America. It is celebrated to thank the Lord Almighty for a bountiful harvest. At the end of

the main meal, usually characterized by roasted turkey and pumpkin pie, it is customary to relax while

watching the featured “Thanksgiving Day Classic” football competition; the Canadian Football League

offers doubleheader schedule of matches. During the Thanksgiving weekend, Canadians have their last

outside getaway before the arrival of the long and cold winter; they usually watch or participate to one of

the many parades. Most churches tend to decorate with the traditional cornucopias, wheat sheaves,

pumpkins, and corn ears.

Thanksgiving is celebrated also in two other Anglophone countries: United Kingdom and

Australia. In the UK the Harvest Festival is popularly known, is one of the oldest festivals and it's held

every year in the month of September, on a Sunday nearing the harvest moon but it's not a national

holiday. It began in churches in the year 1843, and this resulted in the custom of decorating churches

with home-grown products. During this festival the entire community is invited for a celebratory dinner

as part of the festivity. Children sing hymns, and gift fruits and vegetables.

The Australian Thanksgiving is an Apple and Grape Harvest Festival celebrated in the month of March in

the granite belt, region of Queensland. It lasts 3-4 days and various cultural and fun events are organized

such as grape crushing competitions, street carnivals and grand parades. Magnificent display of fireworks

is another feature of the festival that ends with the crowning of 'Apple 'n Grape' ambassador.

Something that really surprised me are the celebrations and holidays similar to Thanksgiving,

are very popular in the Asia. Malaysia has the 'Kadazan' harvest festival celebrated every year in the

month of May to thank the Rice God. Tapai, the homemade rice wine, is distributed generously among

localities who wear their traditional costumes to mark the festival. People believe 'without rice there's no

life'. Many activities are organized like agricultural shows, buffalo races and traditional games.

In India, Thanksgiving is observed mostly by Christians in the state of Goa, but it has a

different name: 'Ladin' that literally means a litany to the Virgin Mary. The Thanksgiving function is held

on August 15 and is sponsored by a different person every year who either seeks benefits or has been

lucky enough to have God's special grace. The preparations include the purchase of wheat and gram,

candles, wine and colored tinsel paper. An altar is also built and decorated with flowers and creepers.

If we keep going East, Korea has its own Thanksgiving called 'Chu Suk'. During this festival families

visit their ancestral properties in home towns and hold memorial services at the grave sites of the elderly.

The characteristic food is called 'Songp'yon'; a crescent-shaped rice cake stuffed with sesame seeds,

chestnut paste or beans. Activities like archery, wrestling, and singing competitions are common feature

of this Korean harvest festival.

In the end there is a Chinese version of Thanksgiving that is celebrated on August 15, like the

Indian one, because Chinese believe that the moon is roundest and brightest on this day. Lovers speak out

their heart to each other below the full moon. Since this holiday in mainly linked to the moon the typical

delicacy is called 'moon-cake': a round or rectangular pastry made up by a rich and thick filling, usually

made from red bean or lotus seed, surrounded by a thin crust; it is usually accompanied by Chinese tea.

Wherever it is celebrated, whether in North America or in the far East, Thanksgiving is the

opportunity for us to remember that there are people that are not as blessed as we are, and to be thankful

for our wonderful lives.

Why are you thankful

By:Christian Mariscal and Mykil Vonk

Students and teachers of SSC have a lot to be thankful

about. We stopped in the kitchen and asked the cooks what they

are thankful for. Jo Reints replied with her family, friends,

health, and her wonderful job. Ruth Johnson is obliged for her

family, friends, and her health because she doesn’t feel old.

Betty Bloch is thankful for her home, living in this awesome

country, job, family, and her friends.

The students of SSC are also praising that they have

the gifts they will ever need. Catelyn LaCour is thankful for her

family, friends, home, food, and for life. Justin Jass is grateful

for his family, friends, and the successful football season.

The teachers of SSC have plenty of reasons to be

thankful. Jason Fisher is thankful for his wonderful wife and

kids, his health, and his great job he has at SSC! Kerri Sydnes

is thankful for her family, health, job, friends, freedom, and her

home. Katy Hatendorf is grateful for her health, friends, and

her family. Ann Wendorff is appreciative for her great husband

and kids, also the great kids of Heron Lake-Okabena school,

the great teachers here, and also the awesome weather we are

having. Christine Malm is obliged for SSC giving her her job,

all the students that are angels, her family, and the successful

volleyball team she had. Les Knutson is pleased for the good

students, living in this free country, and he is also thankful to

come back and teach in Okabena. Colleen Freking is thankful

for her family, friends, her warm house, and the kids that

behave in school. Paul Bang is pleased with his job, healthy

family, that he can skate, and his education. Doreen Dewall is

grateful for her health, and her family, because they don’t give

her a headache. Doyle Zeller is thankful for his faith, family,

friends, and his job that he loves so much.

Thanksgiving is the time to reflect back and realize

what you do have and how it has impacted your life. Spend

time with your friends, family and co-workers this

Thanksgiving season!

The history of Thanksgiving

By: Kristin Liepold Thanksgiving stems from the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians

holding a feast at Cape Cod to commemorate the successful crop and

surviving the bitter winter of 1620.

The arrival of the Pilgrims brought a new tradition to America.

The voyage of the Mayflower took just over two months. They left

Plymouth, England on September 6, 1620. There were 102 passengers and

30 crew men on board this 100 foot ship. After 2750 miles, they found land

in present day Cape Cod on November 11, 1620.

The technology and structure of the Mayflower did not protect the

Pilgrims from Mother Nature’s fierce winds. The Pilgrims faced many

storms in their journey at sea. Once on land, many people died of diseases,

the freezing winter, or no food. By the autumn of 1621, there were 53

survivors. These 53 survivors continued to explore the area. The

Wampanoag Indians contributed to their survival by teaching the Pilgrims

basic hunting skills. In 1621, they celebrated and gave thanks for such a

successful harvest and surviving the severe winter. The Pilgrims and Indians

worked together in creating a grand feast consisting of duck, deer, cabbage,

corn and squash. The feast was followed by three days of "thanksgiving"

celebrating their good fortune.

Abraham Lincoln gave his Thanksgiving Proclamation on October

3, 1863. Lincoln wanted to bring people together in peace during the tough

times of the civil war. In his proclamation, Lincoln reserved the fourth

Thursday of November as a day of thanks and praise.

President Roosevelt felt that Thanksgiving should be a week

earlier in order to lengthen the Christmas shopping season during the Great

Depression. Republicans criticized the change, calling it an insult to the

memory of Lincoln. People began referring to the last Thursday as the

"Republican Thanksgiving" and the 2nd to last Thursday as the "Democratic

Thanksgiving" or "Franksgiving". After controversy, Roosevelt’s

proclamation failed and it was officially changed to the fourth Thursday in

November, just as it is today.

Thanksgiving has always been a day to spend with family,

celebrate religious traditions and to give thanks.

Macy’s thanksgiving day parade

More than 2.5 million people have lined the streets in New York

and 44 million people tune into NBC to watch the giant balloons, marching

bands, floats, and waving celebrities pass through the streets in New York

City. This popular parade is the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade. It has

kicked off the start of the holiday season since 1924.

The parade will feature more than 10,000 participants; 28 floats;

16 giant character balloons; 40 novelty balloons, balloonicles and

balloonheads; 1,600 cheerleaders, dancers and performance group members;

900 clowns; 11 marching bands; a group of celebrity performers; and the

man of the season, Santa Claus. The parade will be aired live on NBC's

Today Show from 9 A.M. to noon on Thanksgiving Day.

The first-ever Macy's Day Parade took place on Christmas of

1924. Macy's employees dressed as clowns, cowboys, and other amusing

costumes. They also traveled with Central Park zoo animals and with

creative floats a lengthy six miles from Herald Square to Harlem in

Manhattan. More than 250,000 people lined the streets to watch the first

ever Macy’s Day Parade. In 1927, Felix the Cat became the first giant

balloon to ever participate in the parade. In 1928, Felix was inflated with

helium, and without a plan to deflate this enormous balloon, NYC parade

organizers just let Felix fly off into the sky. Unfortunately, he popped soon

afterwards.

The Macy's Day Parade continued to let a balloon fly off in

following years, only these helium balloons would have a return address

written on them, and whoever found the balloon could return the balloon for

a prize from Macy's. However, the results of this experiment weren't exactly

successful. Tune into NBC’s Today Show to watch this remarkable parade

live!

Black Friday shopping

By Sonja Peters, Selina Thatcher and Gabrielle Westman

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving when major retailers have their

largest sales of the year. Black Friday started in 1961 and originated in Philadelphia.

Black Friday will be densely packed with ambitious shoppers, the streets are going to

be flooded with traffic, and stampedes will form outside the walls of the store.

Black Friday is a tradition that would mark the beginning of the holiday

shopping season. On this day, business will open extremely early and offer promotional

sales to kick off the holiday shopping season. This day also indicates the point at which

all business would begin to turn a profit. Many people may think that Black Friday is a

national holiday, but in reality it is not. People go to great lengths, some even deadly, to

take advantage of the great deals of Black Friday.

It has long been characterized as the busiest shopping day of the year. Black

Friday has been recorded as the most active shopping day of the year since 2005. As

shocking as it may sound, during the years of 1993-2001, Black Friday was ranked

somewhere at the 5th-10th place range of the most rambunctious day of the year.

The Saturday before Christmas has taken first place in these rankings since 2003.

Black Friday has been around for quite a while, but in recent years it seems the public has taken

the term to extremes.

Black Friday began as a day after Thanksgiving where people ventured out to do their

Christmas shopping. The “black” in Black Friday came from stores moving from red ink (a loss in profit)

to black ink (a gain in profit). The profits were so big that the day soon became known as Black Friday.

In the last few years, it feels like people are more focused on the physical object than the

thought behind it, and as a result, there have been many fights and riots. Just a year ago, two men got into

a fight outside the Worthington Wal-Mart and an ambulance had to be called. A year prior to that, again

at Wal-Mart, two men got into a fist fight over a flat screen TV. These are just the last two years, for one

store, so it scares me to think of what it’s like in larger metropolitan areas like the Twin Cities or Sioux

Falls. As a result, one can now see that Black Friday has gotten way out of hand.

Girls basketball jamboree

By: Rachel Mathias and Kaylynn Droll

Last Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, the Wildcats participated in the Jamboree at Adrian. The

Wildcats played Fulda for one 18 minute half. Fulda took the victory, 31-19.

The girls started strong with a 3-pointer made by Courtney Place within the first 30 seconds of

the game. Fulda turned the game around with multiple baskets to push ahead. The girls didn’t give up

though; they responded by stealing the ball a couple times to add on to their score. Place was the leading

scorer with 13 points. Sonja Peters, Gabi Stenzel, and Alaina Klingenberg also pitched in with 2 points

each.

Since Thanksgiving is just around the corner, we asked a few of the players what they are

thankful for. Sonja said, “I’m thankful for my family and friends and those who are there for me.”

Courtney said, “I’m thankful for my family and friends, especially Jaden, Kailey, and Rachel. I’m also

thankful for food.” Kristin said, “I’m thankful for school, church and the people who support me.”

Catelyn said, “I am thankful for all the people present in my life, because without them, who knows

where I’d be. Also, I’m thankful for being born and that I’m not a bum living on the street or starving.”

Muzzleloader season Fishing tip

By Clay Salwedel and Ethan Schmit

With muzzleloader season just around the corner there are a lot

of people getting ready to go out and hunt. This would be a

great time to hunt if you didn’t get a deer during slug season. If

you tag a deer this weekend upload a photo to either Clay

Salzwedel or Ethan Schmit, to see if you win the Running’s

Gift card in the contest for the best deer.

Use safety pins to keep the fishing hooks in your tackle box

organized. Simply feed the point through the eye of the hooks.

A lot of hooks fit on one pin, and it’s an easy way to keep the

different kinds of hooks sorted.

Hunting joke of the week

By: Clay Salzwedel and Ethan Schmit

It was Saturday morning as Bill, an avid hunter, woke up ready to go bag

the first deer of the season. He walks down to the kitchen to get a cup of

coffee, and to his surprise he finds his wife, Betty, sitting there, fully

dressed in camouflage.

Bill asked her, "What are you up to?" Betty smiles and replied,

"I'm going hunting with you!" Bill, though he had many reservations about

this, reluctantly decided to take her along.

Later, they arrived at the hunting site. Bill sets his wife safely up

in the tree stand and tells her, "If you see a deer, take careful aim on it and

I'll come running back as soon as I hear the shot."

Bill walks away with a smile on his face knowing that Betty

couldn't bag an elephant, much less a deer. Not ten minutes passed, when he

is startled as he hears an array of gunshots.

Quickly, he starts running back. As he gets closer to her stand, he

hears Betty screaming, "Get away from my deer!"

Confused, he races faster towards his screaming wife. And again

he hears her yell, "Get away from my deer!" followed by another volley of

gunfire.

Within sight of where he had left his wife, he is surprised to see a

man, standing there, with his hands high in the air. The man, obviously

distraught, says, "Okay, lady, okay. You can have your deer. Just let me get

my saddle off it."
