That Thing Called Tadhana (Official English: ThatThing Called Meant-To-Be[1] and Literal English: ThatThing Called Destiny) is a Filipino romantic comedy filmstarring Angelica Panganiban and JM de Guzman. Priorto its commercial release in 2015, it was an entry to the2014 CinemaOneOriginals Film Festival where it earnedtop honors notably the Best Actress award for Pangani-ban. It is directed by critically acclaimed rookie director,Antoinette Jadaone[2] who had worked with Panganibanin the 2014 comedy flick, Beauty in a Bottle.The film met both commercial and critical success and ispenned as the highest grossing Filipino independent filmof all time yet breaching ₱134 million gross revenue inunder 3 weeks, despite facing piracy issues online duringits run.[3][4] It has received an average rating of 8.8/10 inIMDB[5] and a perfect five stars in local film review siteClickTheCity.com.[6] Furthermore, it was graded “A” bythe Cinema Evaluation Board and given a Rated PG bythe MTRCB.[7][8]

1 Overview

1.1 Background

Director, Antoinette Jadaone considersThat Thing CalledTadhana as her “dream project” and described it as “morethan 10 years’ worth of love stories, heartaches, heart-breaks, bitterness and acceptance”.[9] The lead protago-nist, Mace was first drafted during 2014 while Jadaonewas filming for Relaks, It’s Just Pagibig, the character hada cameo appearance in the said film but was played byAlessandra De Rossi as opposed to Panganiban.[10] Dur-ing the post production of the film, the crew experienceda test in their teamwork when the foreign publishers ofthe song they want to use, Whitney Houston's “Where DoBroken Hearts Go?" charged them ₱220,000 for acquisi-tion rights - but the ₱2 million budget they were awardedby the film festival had been used up. Eventually, thecrew asked their friends to contribute ₱500 each in ex-change of being mentioned in the ending credits of thefilm, showing the passion behind-the-scenes.[11][12]

1.2 Plot

Awoman, Mace Castillo (Angelica Panganiban) who wasdesperately struggling in unloading her excess baggage inan airport in Italy, crying over on how she can get an exact

load limit with her baggage until a man came up, Anthony(JM deGuzman)who comes to her aid and offered a spacein his luggage until they both had finally checked out andwent back to their home country. At the Philippine Air-port, the two decided not to take the next cab ride andinstead go somewhere. Both of them ended up singing ina karaoke bar where they sang together the songWhere doBroken Hearts Go and after a few drinks, Mace told An-thony that she wanted to go to Baguio City. On their way,Mace woke up surprised that she can't believe herself ask-ing Anthony to go with him and in Baguio to begin with.In the middle of the travel, they stopped over a terminalstation and Anthony asked Mace to go down the bus andjoin him to eat some snacks. Anthony bought hotdogs andsodas, where Mace assumingly squeezed ketchup on An-thony’s food and apologized for doing it, because it wassomething that her ex-boyfriend likes her to do. Anthonymentioned several different things and Mace had alwayssomething in it that reminds her of her ex. Mace remem-bered a friend whose deal was to pay another friend forevery time she mentions her ex. For which, both decidedto go for 100 pesos every time Mace mentions her Ex.Then as they reached their destination, they went to anArt Exhibit. While Anthony is staring at a painting, Macediscovers that Anthony has the passion for Arts, specif-ically in painting. They went out to eat lunch and in theconversation, Mace reveals that she also had a thing forwriting during her college years, which was titled “TheArrow with a Heart Pierced Through Him”.
