    Lesson 11 Renewal Movements in the Church

    Second Vatican Council an ecumenical council held at the Vatican City, the first such council since

    1870 and the only second since the sixteenth century Council of Trent initiated by Pope John XXIII in

    1962-1965. According to him, the Church was badly in need of hat he called aggionamento or

    updating. it aims to carry out reforms in the Church

    The Vatican was supported by 16 documents consisting of4 constitution; 9 Decrees and 3 Declarations.

    Constitution- Document of the highestauthority, issued by the Pope, or by a Church Council with the

    Popes approval pertaining to our characteristic of a doctrine or code or beliefs accepted as

    authoritative. When used to proclaim a Church dogma , called a Dogmatic Constittion. When used for

    pastoral teaching, called a Pastoral Constitution.

    Decree- A doctrinal or disciplinary act of an ecumenical council. An administrative act applying or

    interpreting articles of canon law deciding what is to be done or to take place

    Declarations - The document or instrument containing such statement or proclamation on a particular

    basis that is emphatic & explicit.

    Some changes brought by VATICAN II Council

    change in liturgical language (from Latin to the vernacular)

    reformulation of sacramental rituals

    ecumenical openness toward other Christian Churches

    stress on the collective responsibility of bishops in the mission of the Church

    adopt the Gospel to diverse cultural traditions

    reformation of priestly educationpartial acceptance of diversity in theology & local practices

    more acute concern for political and social issues especially where moral question are involved

    DOGMATIC CONSTITUTION ON THE CHURCH ( LUMEN GENTIUM )(LG)

    promulgated by His Holiness Pope Paul VI on November 21, 1964

    -it describes more fully the nature of the Church as the People of God and redefines its

    mission.

    DOGMATIC CONSTITUTION ON THE DIVINE REVELATION (DEI VERBUM (DV))

    promulgated by His Holiness Pope Paul VI on November 18, 1965

    - it defines the Scripture and Tradition as the main source of faith and Gods revelation

    PASTORAL CONSTITUTION ON THE CHRH IN MODERN WORLD(GAUDIUM ET SPES) (GS)

    promulgated by His Holiness Pope Paul VI on December 7, 1965

    - it describes the mutual relationship of the Church and the World.

    -It calls the religious to renew and examine their life in conformity to the gospel values.

    -It encourages Christian unity and Respect for other beliefs.
