Values

Mission

We gather to worship, witness, learn, grow, and serve, creating Jesus’ embrace through outreach, arts, educational programs and the sanctuary of

our church and gardens.

Vision

We joyfully join the Holy Spirit to transform this world into the kingdom of God, celebrating the diversity and dignity of all creation, connecting

people to each other and to the Divine.

We set scripture, prayer and sacraments at the center of our communal life.

We practice inclusive hospitality, valuing diverse experiences and contributions from our parish,

our neighbors, and the wider community.

We honor our progressive Anglo-Catholic heritage through our service at the altar and our service to those in need.

We strive to be good stewards of the resources God has given us, giving our highest and best to God in all that we do.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant The Lord be with you.People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to obtain your promises, may become partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

All are seated.

THE FIRST LESSON Ezekiel 18:1-4,25-32

The word of the Lord came to me: What do you mean by repeating this proverb concerning the land of Israel, “The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge”? As I live, says the Lord God, this proverb shall no more be used by you in Israel. Know that all lives are mine; the life of the parent as well as the life of the child is mine: it is only the person who sins that shall die. Yet you say, “The way of the Lord is unfair.” Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way unfair? Is it not your ways that are unfair? When the righteous turn away from their righteousness and commit iniquity, they shall die for it; for the iniquity that they have committed they shall die. Again, when the wicked turn away from the wickedness they have committed and do what is lawful and right, they shall save their life. Because they considered and turned away from all the transgressions that they had committed, they shall surely live; they shall not die. Yet the house of Israel says, “The way of the Lord is unfair.” O house of Israel, are my ways unfair? Is it not your ways that are unfair? Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, all of you according to your ways, says the Lord God. Repent and turn from all your transgressions; otherwise iniquity will be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed against me, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, says the Lord God. Turn, then, and live.

All remain seated for the psalm. The refrain is intoned, then repeated by the congregation and sung as indicated.

PSALM 25:1-8Plainsong, Mode II

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; my God, I put my trust in you; * let me not be humiliated, nor let my enemies triumph over me.Let none who look to you be put to shame; * let the treacherous be disappointed in their schemes. Refrain

Show me your ways, O Lord, * and teach me your paths.Lead me in your truth and teach me, * for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long. Refrain

Remember, O Lord, your compassion and love, * for they are from everlasting.Remember not the sins of my youth and my transgressions; * remember me according to your love and for the sake of your goodness, O Lord. Refrain

Gracious and upright is the Lord; * therefore he teaches sinners in his way.He guides the humble in doing right * and teaches his way to the lowly. Refrain

THE SECOND LESSON Philippians 2:1-13

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-- even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 21:23-32

Deacon The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When Jesus entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” Jesus said to them, “I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” And they argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet.” So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. “What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ He answered, ‘I will not’; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, ‘I go, sir’; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.

OFFERTORY HYMN 483 · St. Magnus

O nomen Jesu, nomen dulce, nomen Jesu, nomen delectabile, nomen Jesu, nomen confortans, quid est enim Jesus, nisi salvator? Ergo Jesu, propter nomen sanctum tuum, esto mihi Jesus, et salvame. Alleluia.

O name of Jesus, sweet name, name of Jesus, delightful name, name of Jesus, strengthening name; for what is Jesus but the Saviour? Therefore, Jesus, on account of thy holy name, be to me Jesus, and save me. Alleluia.

12 SEASON AFTER PENTECOST

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer A, The Book of Common Prayer, p. 361

The Celebrant continues: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name.

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS Hymnal S129Robert Powell

The Celebrant continues. Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave

Page 13: The 17th Sunday After Pentecost 27 September 2020 AFT

it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and PeopleChrist has died.Christ is risen.Christ will come again.

The Celebrant concludesWe celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

16 SEASON AFTER PENTECOST

About the music at today’s servicePeter Philips (1561-1628) was an expatriate English musician who, because of his Roman Catholic faith, lived and worked in the Spanish-dominated South Netherlands. Philips had been a choirboy at St. Paul’s Cathedral, but left England at the age of about 20. After three years in Rome, extensive travel throughout Europe, and seven years in Antwerp, he entered the Chapel Royal of the Archduke Albert in Brussels in 1597 and remained there as an organist until his death.

His music was quite popular in his time, with publication of his music continuing after his death. While Philips was born in Great Britain, his vocal music ‘affecteth altogether the Italian vein.’ His church music is conservative in style, but, at the same time, passionate in expression, much like the music of Heinrich Schütz.

Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713-1780) was a composer whose career spanned the end of the Baroque and beginning of the Classical era. In many respects, it typifies the problems many musicians had in coping with the drastic change of style this implies. Since he was an exceptionally skilled writer of counterpoint, he might have ended up with considerably wider fame if he had been born 20 years earlier.

Johann Ludwig was the son of Johann Tobias Krebs, the organist of Buttelstedt, near Weimar, who had studied with J.S. Bach. Father taught son organ, harmony, theory, and counterpoint. Johann Ludwig was sent to enter the Thomasschule in Leipzig, where Bach was music director. Krebs general studies and lessons in singing, lute, violin, and keyboard. He remained a singer in Bach’s choir until 1730. Krebs had a very high reputation among his contemporaries. Bach held him in high regard, punning on both their names (Krebs [crab or crayfish] and Bach [brook or stream]) by saying “He is the only crayfish in my stream.” It is not surprising that many of his works, especially his organ compositions, are very much like those of Bach.

The postlude today is one of the eight so-called “Little” Preludes and Fugues, traditionally attributed to J. S. Bach. These pieces are now widely believed to have been composed by one of his pupils, possibly Johann Tobias Krebs or Johann Ludwig.

St. Luke in the Fields Church joins 200 parishes in the Episcopal Diocese of New York to read, understand and learn from one of the most important books of our time.

FROM BISHOP ANDREW DIETSCHE:“I could not be more pleased and honored to commend this remarkable book to the people and parishes of this diocese. Kendi pulls back the social covering to reveal the ways by which often unacknowledged racist assumptions infect every institution and system, and my heart and mind, and yours too. He offers an invitation to all of us and each of us to be transformed, to be enlarged, to be enriched, and to become bet-ter and more complete human beings, and more just communi-ties. All together, in all our common humanity.”

“HOW TO BE AN ANTIRACIST” Book Group meets Tuesdays from 7 - 8 PM on Zoom.

The Moderator is Richard Kigel, member of St. Luke’s Vestry and author of Heav’nly Tidings from the Afric Muse: The Grace and Genius of Philis Wheatley.

You will need to purchase the book to follow the dis-cussion. For questions and to acquire the Zoom link, email: Zarina Sanjana ([email protected]) or Richard Kigel ([email protected]).

Parish IntercessionsPersons listed below are prayed for weekdays by name at the 6:15pm Eucharist and on other occasions through-out the week. Due to the large need, the list is kept to family, loved ones, and close friends of parishioners only; names remain on the list for one month (six months for chronic illness). An additional list, circulated electron-ically to the intercessory prayer group only, is maintained for private concerns and for a wider circle of concern that may include parish members’ acquaintances, loved ones of close friends, etc. All of the names on the printed list and the electronic list are prayed for regularly by members of the Intercessory Prayer Group. Parish members are encouraged to incorporate this list into their own devotions.
