INTRODUCTION

The East African Banking School is a Regional Conference organized jointly by Institutes of Bankers in Kenya, Tanza-nia and Uganda. The banking school serves as a forum where bankers from the region, through presentation of researched papers by Top Bankers and other invited Speakers dialogue on a range of issues that impact on their careers and the financial services environment in general. The opportunity to be derived from such a forum for learning, interaction and networking with colleagues and experts from across the region and beyond is invaluable. It provides important, personal contacts and a rare opportunity for valuable exchange of views in both a professional and social perspective.

THE SCHOOL’S OBJECTIVES

The major objective of the School is to raise the level of knowledge, competence, professionalism, integrity, trust and confidence among the participants by:

i. Bringing together employees, employers and experts within the financial services to bridge the communication gap, promote co-operation, interaction and networking, exchange ideas and seek solutions to similar challenges within respective economic and banking sectors in a regional context

ii. Updating their knowledge on the principles and practice of modern banking and finance.

iii. Making them aware of and appreciate the wider issues with which they have to deal with and equip them with the knowledge and skills appropriate to cope with their increased responsibilities.

iv. Enhancing their confidence through taking part in case studies and discussion groups, with special reference to business strategy and personal development.

v. Helping them meet the current challenges facing banking and financial services.

vi. Contributing to the development of highly skilled, professional and competent bankers in the region.

THEME

The chosen Theme for this year’s School is “The Future of Banking in a Digital and Disruptive Environment”. Technology continues to disrupt the historical order in the financial services industry in ways that render the future of banking uncertain. This change is impacting virtually all aspects of the provision of financial services including delivery mechanisms, scope of players, product and risk profile , regulatory and compliance environment, level of inclusiveness, human capital aspects and institutional strategies for survival and growth. This appreciation of digitization and its impli-cations for the future of the banking industry will form the basis for the 2018 Banking School.

THE SCHOOL’S PROGRAMME CONTENT

Based on the above Central Theme, the following sub-themes have been identified as some of the key discussion points;

1. Strategic Rethinking and Repositioning in Financial Services

Faced with a dynamic and increasingly more competitive environment, a financial institution needs to continuously re-assess the environment in which it operates and redefine its offering, niche market, delivery channels and other critical variables. This is vitally important for the financial institution to reposition itself so as to retain or enhance its competi-tive edge in today’s complex financial services industry This paper will discuss the context and rationale for strategic rethinking and repositioning and provide practical pointers regarding how financial institutions in practice undertake thIs process.

2. New paradigms in Financial Inclusion

The advancement of greater levels of financial inclusion is a critical policy goal in virtue of its contribution to socio economic development. The promotion of meaningful financial inclusion is however challenged by a range of obstacles

calling attention to the need for ingenuity and new paradigms in order to foster it.This paper will discuss the concept of financial inclusion and its significance for economic development; highlight vari-ous approaches hitherto adopted and emerging paradigms for advancing financial inclusion.

3. Rebuilding Integrity and Trust in Financial Services

The provision of financial services rests on a foundation of trust in the competence and integrity of the actors who man-age it. Trust and integrity are thus imperatives for the soundness and stability of the financial system and deserve the attention of all industry actors, regulators and policy makers. The lessons from history have amply demonstrated the adverse consequences to the financial system when trust and integrity are called into doubt. This paper will discuss the critical importance of trust and integrity in financial services and, drawing on examples from recent history from regional and / or global sources, highlight notable cases of decline in trust and integrity and the con-sequences for institutions and the broader financial services industry.

4. Risk based Oversight and Compliance in Financial Services

Risk management and compliance with the regulatory regime has come to be an important aspect of the operations of financial institutions. Banks have to develop a broad understanding of their complex risk and regulatory environment and develop effective systems for oversight and compliance. This paper will discuss basic concepts of risk and compliance, highlight contemporary practices and the implications for financial institutions of emerging risks and regulatory regime.

5. Marketing and Product Innovation in Financial Services

Innovation and good marketing are critical differentiators which create the foundation for a sustainable competitive edge in the financial services industry. Effective marketing and product innovation however require ingenuity, an understand-ing of the target market and an institutional culture that promotes innovation. This paper will discuss the role of marketing and product innovation in a financial institution and draw on contemporary examples to demonstrate how effective marketing and product innovation (or the lack of them) have contributed to the competitive advantage (or disadvantage) of particular financial institutions.

6. Leveraging Disruptive Technologies to Create a Competitive Edge

Digital technologies, commonly described in terms of their disruptive potential, are in today’s financial services environ-ment an indispensable means for obtaining a competitive edge. Financial services practitioners today need a good under-standing of the various technologies at hand as well as the most optimal approach to deploying them so as to maximize their efficiency enhancement, cost saving and other advantages they bring along. This paper will discuss the broad array of disruptive technologies at hand and how financial institutions can effectively leverage them to attain a competitive advantage

7. Personal and Career Development in Financial Services

The changing face of financial services has implications for personal development and career choices of financial ser-vices professionals. Automation is chipping away on certain tasks, the skills set required to match the changed environ-ment is fast changing and the need to supplement technical competencies with critical soft skills growing. This paper will discuss the dynamics of today’s job market in the financial services industry and its implications for personal development and career choices.

8. Leadership and Team Building

Financial institutions are especially keen on developing high caliber leaders with a capacity to inspire, motivate and nurture cohesive and high performance teams. This calls for deliberate efforts to create an enabling environment for individuals to grow into effective leaders as well as the culture of team work to flourish. This presentation will discuss the concept of leadership and offer practical guidance on what it takes to nurture good leaders and create effective teams. The presentation shall also include a practical team building session.
