It’s hard to believe that it’s been half a year since we last put on a Soundscape and that it’s now over five years since we came up with the idea. So much has changed … and thankfully it’s all for the better.

Soundscape started in, what now looks like, the worst possible way… it was originally supposed to be a rave named “Glow”.

Just judging by the name, you can tell that things have changed for the better.

James Lawless and I were a touch naïve back then and thankfully the plan to bring Glow to life curled up in a corner and died in the most delightful way possible – drowning in alcohol.

We went back to the drawing board and came up with the idea of a multi-room club night and just a few moths later the first Soundscape took place at The Outback. It featured 15 DJs spread over three zones including Commercial House, Electro and Dubstep. Looking at the poster and the line-up amazing that we made it this far. It was an epic night, full of the mandatory sex, drugs (which we would never encourage) and, er, dubstep. I barely remember the night which is probably due to equal parts of excitement, stress and intoxication.

It sold out at 1800 patrons which was quite surprising at the time – as we weren’t entirely sure if anyone knew what dubstep actually was. Back then even Skrillex wasn’t producing that genre… In fact, he was still in the emo band From First to Last (due to the current state of dubstep I’m not entirely sure if he’s progressed or regressed since then).

Spurred on by the sellout James and I decided to expand and we joined forces with the Waikato Student Union to produce a festival that wouldnot just benefit students but all of the city. It took three years of selling out the event to get to this point but we are now a fully fledged festival and what makes it even better is the 4am extended license.

We have some huge international acts coming along this time – dubstep legend Bar9 has had over 12,000,000 views on his remix of Example’s Kick Starts – backed up by the top national and local talent (Kora, Annah Mac and Zowie have all gone platinum in New Zealand).

We’ve gone all out for the production and have bigger lighting and sound rigs than ever before but, let’s be honest, most of you probablydon’t care about that. So what we’ve done is tried to put together the best damn party Hamilton has ever seen and the perfect end to an epic O-Week.

We’ll see you there!

“The weekend has landed. All that exists now is clubs, drugs, pubs and parties. I’ve got 48 hours off from the world, man. I’m gonna blow steam out my head like a screaming kettle, I’m gonna talk cod shit to strangers all night, I’m gonna lose the plot on the dancefloor. The free radicals inside me are freakin’, man! Tonight I’m Jip Travolta, I’m Peter Popper, I’m going to never-never land with my chosen family, man. We’re gonna get more spaced out than eil Armstrong ever did, anything could happen tonight, you know? This could be the best night of my life. I’ve got 73 quid in my back burner - I’m gonna wax the lot, man! The Milky Bars are on me! Yeah!”
