Dear Friends,

In 2014, college leaders, faculty, staff, students, and supporters were working behind the scenes, laying the groundwork for many new, exciting, and profound changes in the future.

Several individuals have worked to make a case for a new, state-of-the-art pharmacy facility that will allow our students and faculty to realize advancements in learning and discovery that are currently unattainable with the physical structure in which we are now housed. I’m pleased to report the Iowa Board of Regents approved the schematic design, project description, and budget for the new building.

Also in 2014, a committee of faculty members worked diligently putting wheels in motion to implement a new transformative, student-centered Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum complete with new teaching methods. The curriculum will be realized with the first year pharmacy class in the fall of 2015. More information on this new curriculum will be forthcoming in the months to come.

More groundwork was laid when a new 2014-2019 strategic plan initiative began. A core committee and numerous focus groups were formed, and an all-college retreat took place. As a result, the college has a new high-reaching vision, a robust mission statement, and six strategic initiatives to carry the college well into the future.

I’m not able, in this brief introduction, to point out all of the college’s faculty, students, alumni, and staff members who met 2014’s challenges head-on, or paved a path for larger things to come. But one thing is for sure: our college has an incredibly bright and exciting future awaiting us as we strive to constantly improve the care of Iowans and others whom we serve.

Professionally yours,

Donald E. LetendreDean and Professor

Ever since it became the first public College of Pharmacy west of the Mississippi nearly 130 years ago, the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy has excelled in educating pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. Iowa-educated pharmacists contribute to their communities throughout the state, nation, and world. Our alumni currently practice in 96 of 99 counties in Iowa, and half of pharmacists in the state of Iowa received their training from the University of Iowa.

Our Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program has been consistently ranked as one of the finest in the nation, ranked 17th nationally by US News & World Report. Last year, 108 first-year PharmD students joined our pharmacy

family. They were traditionally adorned with white coats at the White Coat Ceremony by their assigned professional mentors.

That same year, 107 students graduated. The largest percentage of the graduating PharmDs found employment (57 percent), while 37 percent reported placement in a residency, and a smaller percentage chose to further their education.

In 2014, the college enrolled 16 new graduate students who will pursue their PhDs in one of four tracks: clinical pharmaceutical science, medicinal and natural products chemistry, pharmaceutical socioeconomics, or pharmaceutics. In this time period, a total of 79 PhD students were enrolled.

Once they complete their doctorates, these students go on to a variety of roles. In the past six years the highest percentages accepted positions in industry (37 percent), post-doctorate training (17 percent), and tenure track positions (23 percent).

stuDent involvement The college provides opportunities for students to build leadership skills, encouraging them to become lifelong leaders in their communities. Professional leadership and service skills are structured through an Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences 4 course. Many students also join student leadership and

After 50 years of publishing a vital resource to assist decision-making in the use of medications and health care services, the Iowa Drug Information Service division of the College of Pharmacy closed its doors on Dec 31. The Iowa Drug Information Service (IDIS) is an internationally-recognized drug information database. It began in 1965, after research from a faculty member in the college changed the face

– and informational needs – of hospital pharmacy practitioners. The year before IDIS began, the UI College of Pharmacy, under the direction of faculty member William W. Tester, ’51 MS, launched the first formal studies of a hospital-based unit dose drug distribution system. Through such systems, the standard today, medication is dispensed in a package that is ready to administer to the patient. The federally-supported study looked at patient care under a unit dose system. This study changed hospital pharmacy practice by demonstrating that dispensing unit doses of drugs decreased medication errors and improved compliance. But changing the physical distribution system was not enough.

fifty years of service – the iowa DrUg information service

8 University of iowa college of pharmacy

The physical distribution system had to be supported by improved drug information sources and systems. As a result, William Tester established IDIS to help support the clinical pharmacists on the hospital floor. In its lifetime, IDIS grew to over 1000 subscribers, including clients from 60 foreign countries. The database contains over three-quarters of a million documents. The impact of Tester and his research team, IDIS, the College of Pharmacy manufacturing department and the computer science department, was critical to the continuing evolution of pharmacy. Students and graduate students influenced by

Tester continued to push forward the unit dose concept as well as clinical pharmacy as they graduated and went into practice. Hazel Seaba, ’71 MS, currently an Associate Dean for Assessment at the college, became an assistant director at IDIS in 1971. She ultimately became director in 1976 and served in that role for nearly 30 years. During her tenure, the Iowa Drug Information Network was developed, bringing IDIS into the online age. Kevin G. Moores, PharmD, joined the College of Pharmacy as the Director of the Division of Drug Information Service and Clinical Associate Professor in 2005. He also served as a supervisor for the Drug Information Center and Statewide Poison Control Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 1983 – 1992. “Mr. Tester and Ms. Seaba deserve tremendously high praise for first paving the way and later sustaining the indexing service for fifty years. Their vision and leadership are unparalleled,” said Moores. “I also want to thank the extremely hardworking employees who worked for IDIS over the years.”

the college’s budget was stable in fy14. there was a tuition freeze on campus as a whole and minimal salary increases. the research environment has again faced a challenging year with the national research funding climate. we did see an increase in funding which indicated positive efforts on the part of the our research faculty. as we look head, we continue to keep an eye on funding at the state level. Decisions will be made regarding reallocation of funds between the Board of regents institutions as well as potentials effects from an efficiency study being done in an effort to minimize expenses across campus. these changes could have a dramatic impact on our budget and operations going forward. we are moving aggressively to increase private and corporate giving to enhance program support, establish endowments to keep faculty salaries at competitive levels and to provide students with scholarship and fellowship support.
