Dear Alums, Parents and Friends of St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School,
In the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s Pastoral Letter on Stewardship the author’s offer this definition of the Christian Steward; “One who receives God’s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in justice and love with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord.” In thoughtful collaboration with our new Director of Development, Jaime Kim, in the preparation for this most recent issue of The Bridge, we acknowledge the challenges present in being Christian stewards with the many gifts the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School community has been blessed to receive.
We often think of stewardship as the gifts of “time, talent and treasure.” In this context, we are challenged to be responsible with the generous gifts that we receive from all members of our SPSV family to support the mission of the school. In a time where resources are stretched very thin, we are called to effectively, and efficiently, use all of our resources to advance the mission to “challenge students to seek truth as creative, critical thinkers and to be role models who are productive citizens and compassionate individuals sharing their gifts with others.”
Additionally, Catholic Social Teaching directs us to be thoughtful stewards of our natural world. On campus you have noticed the landscape redesign to install more drought resistant landscaping along with the rainwater harvesting system that students designed with a small grant from the Solano Water Authority. In the New Year, we will introduce an electronic version of The Bridge as a way of demonstrating our commitment to caring for our world responsibly. We look for your feedback to improve communication about the wonderful things happening here at SPSV.
As always, I thank you for your continued support of SPSV. I love to meet with others to reflect on the history of St. Patrick - St. Vincent High School and to share about how exciting the future is for the school. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
In the peace of St. Patrick and St. Vincent,
Dave PerryPresident

yMillicent Eileen Duvall SV’85January 18, 1967 – June 5, 2015Millicent Duvall is one of the few who knew everything about St. Vincent Ferrer, St. Patrick and St. Patrick – St. Vincent High School.
Born in Vallejo and a lifelong resident of Benicia, Millie died June 5, 2015. She was 48.
She left the world a better place. With a heart to serve, Millie’s passion for St. Patrick – St. Vincent High School was profound.
“Millie always wanted to know every student by name, forming a social bond that lasted well beyond a student’s four years at St. Patrick – St. Vincent High School” says a former colleague.
As an alumnae of St. Vincent High School, Class of 1985, she excelled academically, and was involved with theater and campus ministry while in school that deepened her friendships with her classmates. Her high school experience transformed her which made her so devoted to St. Patrick – St. Vincent High School’s students and alumni, the community and the Church.
“Anyone who worked with her could see she was a cornerstone of the school” says President Dave Perry.
When Millie came to St. Patrick – St. Vincent High School in the late ‘90s as the Assistant Director of Development, she was so excited about coming home to the beautiful campus nestled in the rolling green and gold hills of the
community she loved. She was ecstatic about being able to return to the school that had given her a solid education and to grow into a position that would allow her to provide that same Catholic education to students.
The overarching impression one has of Millie Duvall is “she was a woman of very strong Catholic faith,” wrote Sheila Williams, Director of Admissions, for the rosary of her beloved friend and colleague.
“It is clear that her love of the Dominican Order informed every part of her being….She had a calling to keep the school’s story and history alive for the current students, faculty, and parents.”

In Mem
oryBut as dramatic as Millie’s impact was in the community at St. Patrick – St. Vincent High School, so was her impact in the local community. After graduating from St. Vincent High School, she worked in various positions throughout the community before she came back to St. Patrick – St. Vincent High School where she served the Office of Advancement for 18 years.
Millie was a longtime member of St. Dominic’s Catholic Church of Benicia, Soroptimist International of Benicia, Benicia Holy Ghost Society, The Benicia Chamber of Commerce and the Benicia Bocce League.
She was as genuine as the earth we walk on. She was always interested in one’s story, whether it came from a young child at church at St. Dominic’s, or one of the “Golden Girls” from Benicia. As one friend and fellow alumni was heard saying, “she was a beautiful person with a kind soul.”
May the road rise up and meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
The rains fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again, May God hold you in the
palm of His hand.
Mill[ie] was the consummate alumnae. She like many of us, truly bled ‘green and gold.’ She owned being a ‘Saint’s Girl’…just like her Mom, Pat O’Connell Duvall SV’44…and loved every minute of being part of her alma mater’s efforts to serve the ‘young people entrusted to her care.’ For her, it was never a job. It was a vocation. I’ve said this for years, hiring Millie to be my Assistant Director of Development was one of the best moves I made during my time at SPSV. I loved that kid! – Former Development Director, Rich Curtola SV’68
Gifts can be made in memory of the Millicent Duvall SV’85 Endowed Memorial Scholarship.

Reunion News Reunion NewsSV Class of 1951 celebrated their 65th reunion on July 30, 2016 at ZioFraedo’s Restaurant in Vallejo. In 1951 there were 56 graduates. Of a possible 29, 18 attended this year’s reunion. The remaining 11 each responded to the invitation but were unable to attend for personal or prohibitive distance reasons. Additionally, 4 classmates not present in the senior year joined the celebration. In a remarkable display of long term friendships, this class has had a reunion marking every 5-year milestone. How impressive it is that every class member still maintains contact with the reunion committee. The hard working and persistent members of the committee are Joann Murphy Carslund, Ann Hasenpusch Wittman, Virginia Kelly McCann and John Walsh.
SV Class of ’61 celebrated their 55th reunion on September 10th, 2016 with a picnic at the Napa Valley home of Elise Widenmann Currey ’61 and amazingly, 45 classmates were in attendance! The reunion was organized by Larry Servente ’61; Class President. Classmates traveled from Colorado, Claire Hay SV’61; South Carolina, Allen Stumley SV’61 and the remainder from all over California. Our prayers go out to Steve Morgan SV’61. While attending the reunion, Steve and his wife, Pam, learned that their home in Shasta Lake had been destroyed in a fire, accidentally sparked when a vehicle knocked over a telephone pole. Those wishing to contact Steve Morgan can email Larry Servente at [email protected].

SV Class of 1965 had their 50th reunion October 10, 2015 at ZioFraedo’s. Seventy-two people attended, including three former faculty members, Pat Zonca (formerly Sister Kevin), Father Martin de Porres (Jack Walsh SV’56) and Mrs. Geraldine Gallagher Truax SV’43. The events continued throughout the weekend with a Mass at the SPSV Chapel the following day, followed by brunch at the Union Hotel in Benicia. The class raised $1,000 to donate to SPSV.
SV & SP Classes of ’78-’82 celebrated their 35+ year high school reunion on August 27, 2016 in Napa. Approximately 120 guests attended with special guests Donna Bettencourt and Mrs. Gerry Gallagher Truax SV’43. Chris Hodge SP ’81 traveled the farthest from New York. Steve Lee SP’80 donated dinner wine for the tables and tequila for classmates. Tim Leary SP’81 printed some poster size ole school pictures that were displayed throughout the hall. SPSV memorabilia items were raffled off and they danced the night away with DJ Sal jamming the tunes.

Ada Minetti Robinson SV’39 passed away July 30, 2016. Ada was born in Gudo, Switzerland, on Jan. 21, 1921. At the age of nine she moved with her family to Vallejo, where she remained a lifelong resident. Ada graduated from Mary’s Help Hospital School of Nursing in San Francisco in 1942 and pursued her nursing profession for 40 years. Most of her career was spent at Vallejo General Hospital and later at Sutter Solano Medical Center, retiring in 1982. She loved playing bridge and spending time with her family and friends. Ada was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Alton “Robbie” Robinson; her parents, Louis and Elvira Minetti and her brother, Arnold Minetti SV’37. She is survived by her husband, Daniel Smith, Jr.; her children, Daniel Smith III, Kathleen Smith and David Smith; one granddaughter, Anelie Nelson; one great granddaughter, Amaia Nelson and her sister, Janet Costa Forthum SV’53.
Patricia Hutchison Duncan SV’50 passed away in the Spring of 2016.

Janet Porter Follett SV’60 passed away September 30, 2015. Janet was born on May 14, 1942 at Vallejo General Hospital to Edward and Clairemarie Porter. She attended Dominican College in San Rafael and taught school in both Oakland and Vacaville, retiring from Vacaville School District as an elementary school principal. After retirement, Janet moved to Columbia, CA where she continued her active life, often visited by former high school classmates. She was an active member of St. Patrick’s Church in Sonora where she was a Eucharistic minister and a minister to the sick. Janet was on the board of directors of her homeowners association and rarely missed a bridge game or any other neighborhood gathering. She was an active member of the Sonora chapter of the American Association of University Women, working tirelessly on their fundraisers. Janet also loved camping with her friends, and often times barely had time to unpack before embarking on another camping trip. But her first love was her family. She face-booked the first thing every morning, hosted holiday family gatherings and frequently visited family in Vacaville. Janet greatly enjoyed the company of her aunt, who lived in Sonora. The two friends shared season tickets to
Oakland A’s games every year and Janet also made several trips to watch the A’s at spring training in Arizona with friends, former high school classmates and family. Janet is survived by her three children, Matt, Kristin and Amy; three grandsons and siblings, Dennis Porter SV’61 and Joan Porter SV’67.
Peter Kramer SV’65 passed away in August 2016. After graduation, Peter enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from October 1965 through October 1969. He was hired as a police officer by the Napa Police Department on December 1, 1970 and was medically retired due to a back injury in May, 1981. Peter served as the department’s range master and armorer and taught many years at the Police Academy at Napa Valley College. From 1983 to 1987 he and his wife, Theresa owned a typesetting business. From 1988 to 2003 Peter worked as a call taker/tow truck dispatcher for AAA, in Napa and then Petaluma. He took an early retirement from AAA and then worked security for COPIA in Napa for a few years. After Theresa’s retirement in early 2007, they moved to Cape Elizabeth, Maine (just outside Portland) to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Throughout 45 years of married life they traveled to all 50 states, drove through many of the National Parks and rode on numerous scenic trains throughout the country. Peter loved trains and has passed this love on to his grandson Collin! Because of his love of trains, next June the family will be bringing Peter’s ashes home to St. Vincent’s Cemetery for burial via Amtrak. Their plan is to have a graveside service, which will be officiated by Fr. Jack Walsh SV’56 (Peter’s cousin) and then have an Irish wake somewhere in the Napa/Vallejo area to celebrate his life. Peter is survived by his

Judith Pace Harrington SV’66 passed away on May 7, 2016. Judith was born in San Leandro to Edward “Bob” and Anne Lorenzi Pace on March 23, 1948. Judy was only six months old when her family moved to Vallejo, eventually living on “D” Street in Bay Terrace. This was next door to Anne’s sister and her family, Betty, Bob and Gale Metcalf. Grandparents, Guilia and Bonuccio Lorenzi, also of Vallejo, came weekly to help out both households, thereby ensuring that Judy grew up in an Italian extended family. After graduation Judy did a stint at Merritt School of Nursing in Oakland before receiving her RN degree in 1971 from Sacramento Community College. Upon graduation, she went from part-time student nurse to full time nurse at Vallejo General Hospital (later Sutter Solano) where she spent 38 years working largely as a critical care nurse. Many still remember her as “the nurse who wore her cap” because she was never a day without it. In 1977 Judy married Darrell Kenneth Harrington, also of Vallejo. In 1979, on her birthday, she gave birth to their daughter, Gale Antoinette Harrington SPSV’97. Judy was always a very involved mom. She coached many of Gale’s sports’ teams, often providing a listening ear, not only for Gale, but also for many of Gale’s friends during their adolescence. Always an active sportswoman, Judy organized fast pitch softball teams through GVRD over the years. She also organized and rowed with teams in Vallejo’s Whaleboat Regatta races. Judy is survived by her husband, Darrell;
daughter, Gale; son-in-law, Steve Snyder and a very large loving family.
Paul Herkenrath SV’66 passed away May 9, 2016. Paul was born in Iowa and raised in Vallejo. He graduated from Sac State in 1972 and in 1973 began his teaching career of twenty years. He taught students in grades three through eight at Golden West, Shasta and McParland Schools in Manteca. Throughout his lifetime of dealing with multiple sclerosis, Paul exhibited a fighting spirit, one that led him to craft his personal life philosophy. He fervently believed, that because of his MS, he touched more lives and with a deeper impact, than if he had not dealt with the disease. He certainly was an inspiration to all who knew him. Never did he let this disease limit his life or hold him back in any way. He continued to share his very dry sense of humor and his love of jokes. Those who knew him could always count on his trademark, a very memorable “eyeroll.” Even after his diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in the late 1970’s, Paul persevered and continued to teach for an additional thirteen years. Nothing could keep him out of the classroom and so, after his retirement in 1993, he volunteered in classrooms until 2009. He had so much passion for teaching math and brain games that he became known as “Mr. Herken-math”. He organized and participated in Family Nights, offering math and science activities for families. His students, their families, and his fellow teachers all described him as being devoted, patient, inspiring, and dedicated. Paul had a unique “aura” about him that seemed to draw people, kids and adults to him. Many of his students will tell you he was their all-time favorite teacher. Paul’s wife, Cheryl, would always speak of her husband’s
fighting spirit and steadfast love. He was a great listener who consistently expressed his love and appreciation for her dedicated care. Paul is survived by his wife, Cheryl; brothers, Vern and Tony; sister, Luann and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Delores and brother, Jim.
William Winter-Quento SV’67 passed away summer of 2016.
Rhonda Cornelius Russell SV’76 passed away on September 9, 2016. Rhonda’s joy in life came from spending time with her children and grandchildren. She always put her family before herself and never missed a single one of her children’s games, recitals or school activities. She loved to cook and host holiday dinners and gatherings with family and friends. Camping trips in the mountains and adventures along the coast were some of her favorite pastimes. Her selflessness and strength were with her till the end. She will be missed beyond words, but forever in our hearts. Rhonda is survived by her childhood sweetheart and husband of 37 years, Timothy; children, Matthew Russell SPSV’02, Derek Russell SPSV’04, and Katelyn; four grandchildren; mother, Dixie Cornelius; siblings, Rod, Rick, and Rochelle Cornelius Thurber SV’83. She was preceded in death by her father, Glenn Cornelius and granddaughter, Abigail.
Janet Elizalde Davis SPSV’88 passed away in July 2016. Janet was born in 1969 to John SV’64 and Judy Pearsall SV’65 Elizalde at Broadway Hospital in Vallejo. In 1993, Janet graduated from UC Davis and married her husband, Mike Davis SPSV’89. Janet is survived by her husband, Mike; parents, John and Judy; daughters, Jessica and Michelle and brothers, Erik Elizalde SP’87 and Mark Elizalde SPSV’89. Her son, John Ryan preceded her in death. Janet was an unbelievable wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Her uncanny way of asking you about the things that mattered most immediately drew you in. She was and is, truly, one of a kind.
Brother Eugene Owen Carty, CFC passed away June 11, 2016. Br. Carty joined the Brothers in 1955 after graduating from Cardinal Farley Military Academy in Reinbeck, New York, which he attended after attending Good Counsel Grammar School in Manhattan. Br. Carty’s mom learned about Farley from two Christian Brothers who believed
the extra discipline offered there matched young Eugene’s spirit, a move Br. Carty recalls with the words…” Thanks be to God! I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t go there.” Young Eugene so embraced the values learned, that he became a cadet leader. Br. Carty began teaching at All Hallows Grammar School in the Bronx, before he began sharing his gift of discipline with high school boys, first at St. Laurence HS in Burbank, IL in 1963, then at St. Pat’s in Vallejo from 1972 to 1981 and finally at Brother Rice HS in Chicago. Along the way he would also share what he learned as a half-miler as a teenager, when he became head track and cross country coach at St. Laurence, during the second year of the school’s existence. Always the community builder, Br. Carty also helped build St. Laurence’s first track. Br. Carty would also coach track at St. Pat’s, while becoming a highly regarded retreat coordinator in the Napa Valley. Br. Carty’s coast to coast experiences in how best to reach boys who have a nose for trouble, boys who need more guidance and boys who could use more spiritual
fulfillment, have been available to Brother Rice Crusaders for 27 years, where he has served as a dean, a teacher, a moderator, a guidance counselor and a Kairos retreat leader. According to Br. Tom Collins, his friend for more than 50 years, during which time Br. Carty never changed his WWII crew cut, “Brother is a behind the scene builder of community, who always thinks of others ahead of himself.” Br. Collins also said “Br. Carty has been elected and reelected the community leader for the brothers who live at Brother Rice, for the same reason he was such an effective counselor, teacher, coach and dean. Like St. Joseph in the bible, Br. Carty is frequently described in three words as “a just man.”” When Br. Carty speaks about how best to instill in our students the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Education, everyone listens. It is a remarkable distinction that a boy with a nose for trouble from Manhattan would grow to be such a highly regarded teacher, counselor, dean and coach, that he would be inducted into two high school halls of fame, St. Pat’s and Brother Rice.
