  • Well done to volunteer Stuart Upperton and James Millen for creating the Butterfly Tunnel

As part of our Summer Appeal this year we asked supporters to send in a butterfly message card with the word that best sums up summer for them. We have received hundreds of these colourful messages and used them to create a beautiful Butterfly Tunnel to bring a little bit of the summer into the House for the Open Days event. The appeal focused on two of the children we care for – Joshua and his little sister Lexi (pictured below). They were born with an incredibly rare genetic condition, West Syndrome, which means they face enormous challenges. Over 700 supporters kindly responded to the appeal, raising an incredible £29,500.

For anyone hoping to attend the Open Days on 2 and 3 October, there’s no need to book and parking and refreshments are available on both days. Bring your friends and family along between 10am and 4pm to see what a special place Chestnut Tree House is!

  • Lucy Groenewoud swaps flying for

fundraising...“My background is in the Airline industry, I worked for British Airways as

cabin crew for over 15 years, during which time I was lucky enough to

be involved in charity work both in the UK and overseas. I got to know

Chestnut Tree House through their involvement with British Airways – the

Airline held several parties for the siblings, children and families of CTH

in the aircraft Hangar and terminal building at Gatwick which were really

popular with the families, and those British Airways staff who volunteered

    to help out.

Having decided that it was finally time to hang up my wings, I am

delighted to be joining the Corporate Fundraising team as Fundraising

and Events Admin Assistant and be able to support the fantastic work the

    team carry out.”

Jane alert!Welcome also to Jayne Todd, who has said farewell to her role as Community Fundraiser for Chestnut Tree House to take on the role of Digital Communications Officer while the lovely Sarah Cox takes her maternity leave.

You may have noticed that Janet Parsons is collecting Janes – Jane Oswin, Jayne Todd and now Jane Martin! We hope it doesn’t cause too much confusion - please take care when emailing that you get the right person!

Cycle to Work DayWell done to all staff who arrived at work via peddle power on Thurs 3 September. Many thanks to Amanda Woolgar at St Barnabas House kitchen for cooking some lovely breakfast bacon rolls for the cyclists, including our CEO Hugh Lowson., pictured far right with Vicki Hedger (left) and Lin Currie (centre).

A special request to all staff and volunteers. We are on the lookout

for new shops. You are the local experts in your area. If you see any

premises that might be of interest and could make a successful shop

(big or small) let us know. Give us the letting agency details and we’ll

    follow it up.

In a moment of weakness, Hugh has promised a

bottle of bubbly to anyone who finds and suggests

premises that we actually go ahead with and open

as a shop. You will also be guest of honour at the

    opening!

    Hospice Hymnathon 2015

    – an all-singing success!

It was with great sadness that our CEO informed us at the beginning of September of the death of Patricia Bowles, a former Chairman, member of Council, Vice President and member of Association. The funeral service was held at St Mary’s Church, Sullington on Monday 7 September. Donations in lieu of flowers were sent on to St Barnabas House. The Service of Thanksgiving for the late Lady Sarah Clutton was held at Arundel Cathedral on Monday 28 September. The open service was well attended by many wishing to pay their respects. Our CEO Hugh Lowson, Chairman Guy Clinch and Linda Perry were there to represent both St Barnabas and Chestnut Tree House.

It is hard to forget those who gave us so much to remember...

  • We have been out and about taking walks in the various parks, going on shopping sprees,

drumming sessions, enjoying a musical seaside sensory day and spending time down at our beach hut.

We had a ‘Wet Wheels’ speed boat trip again at Gunwharf Quays Portsmouth, everyone had a great time. A big thank you goes out to the crew who make the day so special.

Our first attempt at the ‘Mexican Evening’ was rained off but we re-scheduled it for the beginning of September, decorating the garden and tables with all things Mexican. The families tucked into Chilli wraps and all the trimmings, with a lovely gateaux or a treat from the Ice Cream Parlour for pudding. Even the drinks glasses had little moustaches on them. A BIG Thank you to all the entertainers who gave their time to help make the evening a success. Mike Payne with his Caricature drawings, Shauna with her gorgeous Face painting, the Photo Box Company, the

families and staff went home with some very funny photos and the great DJ ‘spoon’ who stepped in at the last moment when the band had to cancel due to illness. To all the staff who worked so hard to make this event so brilliant . You are WONDERFUL.

Trish Cullingford, our Fun and Friendship Coordinator, has organised some fantastic activity days, despite the lack of wall to wall sunshine this summer!

Chestnut Tree’s Summer of Fun and Friendship!

  • Siblings of children with life-shortening conditions were treated to an adventure activity day with Adventure Unlimited at Brook Farm near Mayfield. The day was organised as an opportunity for siblings to enjoy a day of fun, adventure and freedom.

As well as the 300 children with life-shortening conditions across Sussex cared for by Chestnut Tree House, we also care for the families of these children. “A lot of the children we care for have very complex needs” explained Maggie Bunker, Family Counsellor at Chestnut Tree. “This means that their siblings often miss out as families have to spend a lot of time caring for their child. Our sibling days are a great opportunity for children to just be children for the day; to have fun, to be the centre of attention and to be with people who understand their family situation.”

The day included a challenging obstacle course, zip wires and a crate challenge, where the children built towers of crates whilst standing on top of them.

“Everyone had a great day” said Maggie. “All of the children really pushed themselves and achieved things they didn’t realise they could.” One child commented “I liked the obstacle course because it was just amazing! Especially the fairy loops and the zip wire. It was really fun to meet new people and have fun with them.”

On Friday 25 September, a group of key supporters and Patrons of Chestnut Tree House were invited to attend a special “Come Dine at Mine” lunch.

Linda Perry, Director of Children’s Services, cooked once again (with the help of Jez and the catering team!) for special guests including Patrons Sally Gunnell, OBE, DL; Tim Breden, Ambrose Harcourt and our Chairman Guy Clinch. This is the third year this thank you event has been held. The Menu cards were designed by the children. After all the cooking, Linda gave an update on what has been going on in the house and our plans for the future.

  • The evergreen Beryl Short once again hosted a series of fundraising lunches in July. Supported this year by the Northbrook Friends of St Barnabas, the lunches raised £5,700. Pictured right, Beryl presents a cheque to our CEO Hugh in August.

Beryl has now fundraised over £20,000 from her annual lunch events. This is truly a huge amount of money raised for the hospice by an individual – congratulations and thank you Beryl

Margaret Holyoake (treasurer of Goring Friends Group) held a tea party in her garden on 23 July to raise funds for the hospice.

It was a lovely afternoon with guests served home-made scones and cakes. An amazing £334 was raised.

Welcome to Stef and Linda who have recently joined the community fundraising team as volunteers at St Barnabas House

Stef Ransley Stef is the latest volunteer to join and is keen to learn about all the nuts and bolts that make the team work. Stef was a torch bearer for the London 2012 Games and also volunteers in the Lancing shop.

Linda LewendonLinda (pictured far right with Chloe Holt, Community Fundraising Assistant) is an ex school teacher and has come to us to help with various office admin tasks including, database updates, fundraising volunteer communications, thank you letters, and her favourite – the filing! Linda’s favourite thing to do is going on holiday!

Stef is our fourth volunteer now in Community Fundraising along with Linda on Tuesday afternoons and Chris and Philippa on Thursday AM and PM

  • This month saw the return of the Bennett Griffin Beach Volleyball Tournament in aid of St Barnabas House, raising a fantastic £400 for the hospice! Organised for the second year running by Matthew Hollamby, Legal Adviser for Bennett Griffin Commercial, the tournament was held at the Worthing Sand Courts at Splash Point on Friday 18 September from 5pm to 7.30pm.

The flood lights came on as the temperature dropped and the drizzle started. However the generous food and drink provided kept spectators cheering until the end of the tournament, which saw the team from Kingsley Roofing take the winning trophy.

St Barnabas House was delighted to be able to enter a team this year! Many thanks to players Judith Owen-Phillips, Fundraising Development Manager and husband Rhys; Mary Bye, Community Fundraiser; Jemma Cottam-Verbruggen, Events Admin Assistant; Nicky Ifold, Events and Campaigns Fundraiser; Jack Larkham, Contracts, Projects and Business Development Officer; and Emily Skiggs, Marketing Officer.

Bennett Griffin LLP solicitors, based in Ferring, are long term supporters of St Barnabas House and are taking part in this year’s Will Writing Appeal. Visit www.bennett-griffin.co.uk for more information about the firm.

Will Writing Appeal 2015 has begun! Until 25 October 2015, solicitors firms from across Sussex are offering appointments to help you make, or update a standard Will, in return for a donation to either St Barnabas House or Chestnut Tree House. This scheme is open to anyone – including all staff and volunteers, as well as our supporters and the general public. A full list of all participating solicitors and more information about the Will Writing Appeal is available on both websites:www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk/willwritingappeal

    www.stbh.org.uk/willwritingappeal

While there is no obligation to leave a donation to either hospice in your Will, it is worth remembering how important they are to both St Barnabas and Chestnut Tree House. Gifts in Wills are an incredibly special way of showing your support and, on average, the care costs of 1 in 4 of all the patients we look after are funded thanks to gifts in Wills.

Steyning 21st Birthday Handbags and Gladrags

Steyning celebrated its 21st birthday on August 1st 2015. Manager Lisa Wigg, organised celebrations that spanned two days! Working with the local Friends Group, Lisa collected lots of quality handbags and created a stunning window and wall. On the Friday the shop was busy with customers looking for some fabulous bargains. On Saturday Lisa and her team had re-dressed the window with a music theme complete with violinist John Wigg and his colleague Madga. (pictured right). Together the duo kept the guests of Friends, Staff and Volunteers entertained as they supped bubbly, tea and homemade cakes. It was a tremendous success not only for sales but for great publicity as well.

Four new swimming pools!Four of our shops got badly flooded in the heavy rains on 13th August – Hove, Brighton, Seaford and Eastbourne. Unbelievably all four were open the following day. This was down to the incredible good humour and sheer hard work of the managers and the amazing volunteers in each of these shops who coped so well in horrible circumstances.

Fu rniture UpcyclingWe are always needing good quality second hand furniture donations for our furniture shops. However sometimes the quality isn’t always as good as we would wish. But even these items, when given some TLC, can become a jazzy kitchen chair in Brighton or a shabby chic dresser in Havant. Even birdcages can be used to make a stunning window at HenfiledAll they needed was a bit of imagination and a pot of paint.

    Continued over...

Continued corporate support from local f irm Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd have given their support to Chestnut Tree house in many ways including supporting our “Bag it and Give” and “Pay for a Day” campaigns. If you’ve driven along Broadwater Road lately you may have spotted our banners outside one of their construction sites. These are asking for donations and volunteers for the Warehouse and are being seen by thousands of cars each day. They are also helping us to reduce our energy costs at the Warehouse. They conducted an audit throughout the premises and they have been showing us how and where we can make savings.

  • News from Retail - continued...Elephants in BillingshurstThe local chamber of Commerce in Billingshurst gave out several grey plain cardboard-pulp elephants to local shops to create an elephant trail in the town to draw in visitors and customers. Participating shops were required to decorate their elephant. The children and nurses at Chestnut Tree House did a great job making ours as colourful as possible. It has generated a lot of interest with shop manager Jean even being asked whether it was for sale. Jean has also persuaded local actress Sue Jameson (New Tricks) to sign our elephants for added value. The actress has promised to get her husband, James Bolam, to pop in and add his own signature. Congratulations to Jean and her team!!

    Rustington Summer Sale

On Saturday 12 September our Rustington

shop had a huge end of summer season

sale. Sue Miles, the manager made sure

everyone in the village knew something

very special was going to take place...

For weeks Sue had been saving all her summer items ready for the sale. They opened at 8.00am ready for what they all hoped would be a really busy day...

And this it what it looked like at the end of the day! Sue and Tracey the assistant manager, with their amazing team of volunteers sold everything in the shop giving them their busiest day ever. Don’t worry though, all the autumn/winter stock was already prepared and ready to go out the following day. This meant that on the Monday Rustington opened, fully stocked with an entire new selection of goods and clothes.

Emma Brunton, who has been a Community Care Support Worker for 2 years“It is a privilege and honour to work at Chestnut Tree House. I love the variety of working out and about with the children and their families in the Community and also caring for them in the House.”

Meet Flic Archer, who is our Gardener/Maintenance Assistant.“I have been working at Chestnut Tree House for seven weeks now and love my job because I get to work in a beautiful setting. Charlene Brennan, a volunteer at our new charity shop in Chichester.“I walked past the shop taking my children to school and had to stop and look as it was so nice. It’s a really lovely shop, and not at all what you might expect from a charity shop. I’m really enjoying it.”

Sharon Midwinter who has been a Staff Nurse at St Barnabas House for 4 weeks.“I’m enjoying being part of a fantastic team providing specialist care. It’s very rewarding getting to provide that level of care to our patients.”

As you may be aware, last year Chestnut Tree House was delighted to be offered an amazing treehouse by Quiet Mark (the trading arm of the Noise Abatement Society) to be included in our new wheelchair-accessible Woodland Walk. The treehouse was showcased on the Quiet Mark stand at the Ideal Home Show in 2014. Despite huge efforts on the part of the charity and Quiet Mark to make the dream of having the treehouse at the hospice a reality, the sheer costs around the installation and erection of the treehouse and making it accessible for the children and young people at Chestnut Tree House have resulted in the project being deemed unfeasible.

There are also difficulties with the lack of access to the woodland site and the stability of the ground which would only add to the project costs.

After prolonged research, the costs of erecting the treehouse and creating access to it were finally estimated to be a six-figure sum, which would equate to many weeks of all our children’s care

services, both at the hospice and in families’ own homes across East and West Sussex and South East Hampshire.

We held extensive discussions internally and externally with supporters and Trustees as to whether we should attempt to raise the money for the treehouse installation. We concluded that if we were able to raise a sum of this magnitude, then our first duty would be to use it to provide hospice care for the children, young people and families who need Chestnut Tree House. Providing care is the charity’s prime objective as opposed to the installation of the treehouse.

However, I am pleased to say that Chestnut Tree House and Quiet Mark have worked together and the result is that the treehouse will now be adopted by Kew Gardens and put on display in their extensive grounds for visitors to enjoy. Kew Gardens are able to take on the costs of moving and erecting the treehouse. It will be removed from Chestnut Tree House next week (14th September) and we will let you know when Kew plan to install it.

I appreciate that this news may cause some disappointment but I know you will understand the strong reasons outlined above. We still have the wonderful Woodland Walk which is being used extensively and with great enjoyment by children, families and staff.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the management team. We will be providing additional briefing for all staff and volunteers involved in the Chestnut Tree House Open Days in early October.

    Many thanks and kind regardsHugh

    Treehouse Update

  • I started my new role as Hospice Outreach Project Lead earlier this year in May. It has been an exciting time and a steep learning curve for me.

My background at St Barnabas House is as a staff nurse on IPU and then at Hospice@Home where I still work 2 days a week. I have 32 years’ experience as a qualified nurse and have worked in a variety of acute specialities in UK and in New Zealand (where I lived for 7 years).

I also trained as a person centred counsellor for individuals and then trained with Relate as a couple’s therapist.

This new role feels like a combination of both my nursing and counselling skills but is very unique and different from anything I have done before. My first recognition was the difference in pace. As a nurse I am used to working at a fairly frantic pace most of the time. Being actively available and waiting for someone to approach for help is very different. However, the job satisfaction is very similar. The experience of meeting someone who was a) brave enough to approach

    b) feeling lost, overwhelmed, anxious or isolated etc and then for them to leave feeling more empowered, reassured, informed and with a sense of a way forward, is extremely rewarding. We have had people reporting that they are sharing their inner most fears and anxieties for the first time. The magic of the HOP may be the anonymity.

We have been making some practical changes, to dispel ideas that we are all about St Barnabas only issues and fundraising . We are now displaying lots of non STBH leaflets and

information externally; this is working and appears to be encouraging people to approach.

We are now visiting 2 new sites, Rustington, Churchill Parade and East Preston village; both are going well with promising uptake.

We are very excited to have secured Southlands and Worthing Hospitals and have been visiting both since August

  • The Mud Monsters Run is a 5km, 10km or 20km obstacle and mud run in East Grinstead. Whether you run as a team or an individual for Chestnut Tree House, you can save 10% on your entry fee by using the discount code CHESTNUT. The amount you save will also be donated back to the hospice.

The Mud Monsters Run course will take you on a journey across muddy fields, up steep hills, through

woodland, washing off in river crossings, navigating through mud filled craters, fighting your way through deep muddy bogs with many more muddy surprises along the way.

The next Mud Monsters Run is taking place on Sunday 11 October 2015. You can find out more sign up via our website.

Here is what our Finance Director, Max Caunhye, said about the experience after taking part with fellow Chestnut Tree and St Barnabas colleagues in July:

“Trialling an event for work... I’ve always respected our supporters who take part in our events to raise money for all the people and children that we care for. As someone who has ran 10k races, 1/2 marathons and full marathons the mud run was meant to be ‘fun’.

After getting used to the various different types of mud, from the thin light brown type through to the dark and peaty smelly type, I can safely say it was tremendous fun and great to share the experience with fellow workers who give so much to our organisation. Thank you to Nicky Ifould, Jemma Cottam, Kerry O’Neill, Caroline Smith,

Bella Cripps, Caroline McCullough, Caroline Roberts-Quigley, Jayne Todd and Jack Larkham. A special thank you must go to Mark Ward, one of our fundraising volunteers, who attended to take photos but ended up doing most of the course!

I am sure our supporters will enjoy taking part in future mud runs and will raise well needed funds for the hospices”.

Running opportunities for Chestnut Tree House AND St Barnabas House

Leaf Vacuum Donation to Chestnut Tree House by the Bognor Friends GroupIt was on a blustery day last Autumn when Joan watched the Maintenance Volunteers sweeping up the leaves. She asked how often it was done – “every day”, came the reply. “We need to keep the patio and paths clear so that the children can safely play outside.”

At our next meeting, Joan suggested that the money raised from a couple of our 2015 events should be used for the purchase of a Leaf Vacuum which would not only make life easier for the Maintenance Volunteers but also free them up for more useful tasks.

Our Plant Sale in May raised over £800, our Flower Demonstration in July contributed a further £1100+. Ken was consulted over the best equipment for the job and the Billy Goat Leaf Vacuum was ordered and delivered in time for the 2015 leaf drop.

  • This month we take a look at

It is really important that we learn from anything that goes wrong. Therefore the following events should be reported and investigated. An accident which is defined as an unplanned event that results in injury, damage, loss or all three

An incident can be defined as any occurrence that is inconsistent with the routine operation of the organisation i.e. procedures not be followed

A ‘near–miss’ can be defined as an unplanned event that did not result in injury, damage or loss or all three but could have

Accident/Incident and ‘near miss’ report forms are available on each site and should be used for reporting the above events. In addition for accidents causing injuries to staff or visitors the ACCIDENT BOOK should also be completed.

Each reported event should be graded in line with a standard ‘Traffic Light’ grading system and some may need to be reported externally to the Health and Safety Executive and /or the Care Quality Commission

    SPOT LIGHT ON

    HEALTH & SAFETY

Reports should be forwarded to line managers and/or senior managers who are responsible for carrying out an appropriate investigation and making sure that actions are taken if necessary to reduce the risk of a reoccurrence
