Save the Date!
Leadership Development Institute For chapter presidents and one chapter guest. November 30 - December 1, 2018 Spelman College Campus Details are forthcoming.
Get Out the Vote! Tara L. Buckner, C’87, NAASC President
GOTV – Get Out the Vote …because Voting is an NAASC Matter!
This year, the NAASC will focus efforts around voting. This is a new, very important
initiative, and I urge each chapter to take up the cause of the importance of voting
in primary and general elections. Your voice matters!
Although, our organization cannot endorse any candidates for elected office, I am
asking that chapters encourage the following:
1. Know where your polling place is located BEFORE election day.
2. Volunteer at the polls if you are able.
3. Take a Spelman sister, her mother, father, or other family member to the polls. Do your best to
ensure that no one misses an opportunity to show up to vote.
4. Use absentee balloting when necessary. I urge chapters to distribute absentee ballots at
SpelHouse Back-to-School events. If your event has already taken place, then send an absentee
application to your current students by mail or email them the link to the Secretary of State’s office
in your state.
5. Know your rights. If you suspect irregularities, call your local election board. They need to know!
In addition, in November, chapters will be asked to submit a list of members that participated in helping
to get out the vote.
Thanks, in advance, for helping to carry out the dreams of our loved ones!
Long Live 1881!

San Diego/Inland Empire Chapter (CA)
The NAASC – San Diego/Inland Empire Chapter was reactivated on May 19th, 2018 at the 2018
NAASC Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. To ensure that the San Diego and Inland Empire
communities are aware of the chapter’s existence, the chapter and its members have:
1. Helped sponsor the HBCU San Diego Alumni Back-to-School Cookout in San Diego, California on
July 1, 2018;
2. Attended a back to school brunch on July 29, 2018, in Fontana, California hosted by Spelmoms
where five Spelman students were met and sent back to school with love. Sisters provided a care
package wish list to ensure that the love continues to flow from the chapter to campus during the
school year;
3. Gathered as a chapter on August 4, 2018 for our 2018 – 2019 Planning Session in Temecula,
California; and
4. Co-sponsored a SpelHouse Mixer on August 5, 2018 in San Diego, California.
Chapter members have truly enjoyed sharing the existence of the chapter with the San Diego –
Inland Empire communities, connecting with Spelman, and very much look forward to doing the
work of NAASC during the 2018 – 2019 fiscal year. For more information about the chapter, please
email [email protected] or visit the chapter website at www.naascsdie.org.
