A Word from the Pastor

Dear Church, My first experience of St. Luke’s Mardi Gras was pure joy. Thank you to all the wonderful people who shared your gifts to create this special moment in our year. There were the chefs extraordinaire, the decorators, coordinators, bakers, singers, instrumentalists, and the clean-up crew, to name a few. Each of you made it fun by your presence with us, and your willingness to dance to the music to the as an act of worship. Looking around the sanctuary on Sunday, Feb 23rd, I saw glimpses of so many people who care about the traditions of joy and love that St. Luke’s has to offer. Moving together in ministry, I am confident that there is great potential for more people to experience the joy of life at St. Luke’s. For that to happen, we will need to continue to step up in faithful ways to support the ministries to which God is calling us. Throughout the season of Lent, we will create opportunities to be more spiritually grounded, and to step up to the callings before us. I hope that you will join with me in taking the next steps as they are revealed to us. Thank you for being such a wonderful church. I love being your pastor. Peace,

Pastor Stephanie

Lord, as we continue life’s journey, we pray for all who

are challenged by health concerns and ongoing illness.

We know that the awesome God we worship hears the

prayers of our lips as well as the prayers of our hearts.

We pray for people who are currently dealing with a re-

cent illness, surgery, injury, medical or other concern: Sharon C. (Ruth C.’s daughter-in-law) - throat cancer Steve K. - hospitalized with heart, kidney issues (Margie Bro.’s brother) Courtney - brain cancer (Dick & Zo L.’s friends’ niece) Anita G. (Jon G.’s wife) - diagnosed with mass on hip Dylan S. - brain tumor recurrence (from age 4) at 13 (Jeanne U.’s student)

Prayers for people in Care Centers:

Edie B. Sally W. Barb Btchr.

Ruth C.

Prayers for people with ongoing health concerns: George R. Judy M. Cheri L.

Ron L. Susan F. Peggy L.

Johnny Brett C. Bonnie J.

Jeanne P.

Prayers of consolation for those who recently lost loved ones to the families and friends of: Rev. Jerry Chase (husband of Sue H.’s friend) Mary Heles (Food for the Soul regular) Adie Vaske (Kathy M.’s friend) Steve Mercaitis (Judy S.’s cousin) Marjorie H. Rickert (Ruth C.’s sister)

We also offer prayers of comfort and support for those

who struggle with brain health, disabilities, or other im-

pairments that make life difficult to support oneself.

Our prayers also turn to prayers for Peace and Justice

around the world. We especially remember all those who

currently serve in our country’s armed forces.

Lord, we ask your special touch of compassion for all the

victims of civil discord and war, the families of soldiers,

the families of police officers, and all victims of gun vio-

lence. It is in the name of your Son and our Savior that

we offer our prayers. Amen.

Emergency Medical Information Cards

In the event of a personal emergency tak-ing place at church, we recommend you have infor-mation readily available at St. Luke’s for EMTs when they are called. You can fill out a 5x7 card stored in the church office and copies can be given to EMTs if the oc-casion arises. Stop by the church office to fill one out. — Margie Breese, Care and Compassion

Help Needed for Vision Screenings

Volunteers are needed to help with vision screenings done in schools by The Vision to Learn, a mobile clinic vision service. The volunteers’ role in the vision screening will be to go to the classrooms as directed, get the students on the roster and accompany them to the mobile clinic, which will be parked just outside the front door of the school. Then you will accompany students back to their classroom. This task will involve using stairs.

Volunteers are needed two days in March and two days in April. I have divided the time slots into half day segments. If you can stay all day, that would be wonderful but not necessary. Please contact Mary Purdy by email or at 590-5313 at if you can cover any of the following shifts. Fri March 13: 9:45 - 12:00 and/or 12:30 - 3:15

Fri March 27: 9:45 - 12:00 and/or 12:30 - 3:15

Thu April 16: 8:45 - 11:30 and/or 12:00 - 3:15

Fri April 17: 9:45 - 11:30 and/or 12:00 - 3:15

Food for the Soul News

1,778 meals were served at Food For the Soul in the

last three months of 2019. This includes seconds

and carry-out meals. It takes a dedicated bevy of

volunteers to make that happen. In addition to the

teams preparing and serving the meals and to the

hostesses, Chuck Lynch provides critical help to

unload and carry food items obtained at St.

Stephen's Food Bank to the fellowship hall and Al

Limieux and Susan Stone have provided help to also

haul food, set up the food give-away tables and to

prepare the snack vegetables. Everyone makes this

food program possible and allows St. Luke's to help

address hunger and food insecurity in our

community.

Stories & Memories of St. Luke’s Needed

Architecture Day, put on by Dubuque Main Street and the Dubuque City and County Historic Preservation Commission, happens in April every year. This year's theme is "Dubuque Stories" and St. Luke's will be featured for the noon tour on Friday 17 April. Tim Hitzler, who teaches U.S. History at the Alternative Learning Center, is having his students put together a video of interviews with people who have Dubuque stories to share.

If you would be willing to share any of your memories about St. Luke's at the tour on Friday, please contact

R.R.S. Stewart at [email protected] 563.583.4419 or 612.501.9747

If you'd be willing to talk to Tim and his students about St. Luke's or any location in Dubuque that has significance to you, please contact:

Tim Hitzler at [email protected] 563.599.2915 or 563.552.5884

The video of Dubuque Stories will be shown on Monday, 13 April at Carnegie-Stout Public Library in the Auditorium at 5:30.

Sunday Night Youth Group!

Sunday evenings — 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. 6th to 12th Grades (friends welcome!)

Come for games, snacks & community!

Burying Our Alleluia On Sunday, I spoke with the kiddos (and the young at heart) about this season of

reflection we have just entered. During this time, we talked about how during Lent the

church does not say or sing “Alleluia”. As a physical reminder for this, we buried an Alleluia,

a literal large banner that says Alleluia. For the entirety of Lent, the box that contains our

Alleluia will sit in the sanctuary as a reminder of how important both reflection and Lent are.

We decided that on Easter morning, we will unbury our Alleluia and see what it looks like.

The season of Lent is sometimes considered gloomy but truly, this time can be transformative. A time to reflect

on our lives, make the necessary changes to get the outcomes we want to receive, and to realign ourselves with how

Christ wants us to live. Just like our Alleluia will undergo a transformation during the next 40 days of Lent, we can too.

I can’t wait to see what our Alleluia will look like on Easter morning!

Note for Parents of Youth/Children Under 18 — Parents, we are working on collecting media release forms for all

people involved with our youth and children’s ministries, and this means we need you to sign for your kiddos! Media

release forms can be found on our Facebook page (St. Luke’s Children’s and Youth Ministry), in any Sunday School

classroom, or with Emmy! Once filled out return to the youth director office/mailbox in the office. Please contact

Emmy with any questions or concerns. Thank you!
